WRX Forum Buzzz
Forum Thread of the Day: “Who has the smoothest swing you’ve ever seen in person?”

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from Hankshank, as he asks fellow GolfWRX members what the smoothest swing they have seen live is. Plenty of players get a mention, and for different reasons, but for our members, Ernie Els and Fred Couples are quite dominant in this category.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Johnnypenso: “I saw Fred Couples at the Canadian Open back when he first came on tour. His real swing looked more like his practice swing. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how he got such distance out of what looked like a slow and smooth swing. Looks are deceiving I guess.”
- playa: “Not a huge name golfer but John Senden has the most relaxed, rhythmic swing you would ever see. Like the Bruce Lee analogy of letting your body be water, Senden becomes the golf swing.”
- 95124hacker: “Go to an LPGA event and watch petite young women drive the ball 250 effortlessly.”
- 15th Club: “With all due respect, I think that anyone on this board now, who is barely old enough to have seen Sam Snead play at a time when he was not yet well into his sixties; that is the one, pure, shining example.”

In our forums, our members have been reacting to Cameron Smith’s new Scotty 11.5 putter. The flat-stick is a big hit amongst WRXers, and has even been described by one of our members as “basically perfect”.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Katke87: “Ooooh baby baby!!! Can’t wait to get my hands on a new 5 and 11 to see which is more wonderful.”
- TIScape: “Love it! I’m a slant neck fan. Identical to Homa’s it appears.”
- MillerTime859: “That’s basically perfect.”

Rory McIlroy’s Nike Tour Victory II shoes at the 2021 WGC Workday

In our forums, our members have been reacting to Rory McIlroy’s new kicks as well as a putter change ahead of the year’s first WGC.
McIlroy has swapped out his Spider X for a TP Juno flat-stick. Despite the switch, the Irishman lost over a stroke on the greens during round one of the WGC Workday.
Our members have been reacting to the switch and commenting on his Nike Tour Victory II shoes, which are getting praised for their clean look, in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- MBDirtyy: “Looks like the Lunars and back to his anser style putter. 2014 Rory making a comeback.”
- RacineBoxer: “Plain, but very nice.”
- Matty01984: “Much cleaner looking shoe that the majority of the Nike Golf shoes which, for me, is a good thing. As far as Nike shoes go, they might not be as fashion forward as we are used to, but fashion and style are different beasts and this style trumps for me.”

Tony Finau’s short driver backswing – Would he be the longest on tour by a distance if he wanted?

In our forums, our members have been discussing the driver distance Tony Finau generates with his short backswing. WRXer ‘TIScape’ posted a photo of Finau on 18 at Riviera at the top of his backswing from Sunday (above) and says:
“It amazes me how far Tony hits driver with his short backswing. This is a still from a video of his drive at 18 on Sunday at Riviera. Captured at the very top of his backswing. It’s almost as if he’s laying up with driver, and he still averages 306 yards! The clubhead speed he generates with that short swing is astonishing.”
Back in July, Finau showcased his fully extended driver swing in a practice round. The result? 206mph ball speed and a ridiculous 383-yard carry.
Check out the video below.

Our members have been discussing both his current driver swing and whether Finau could be comfortably the longest on tour if he wanted.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- chipa: “His swing is fun to watch. One thing I have noticed about a lot of big hitters is the forward hand position like Finau’s and then turning the left hand over immediately during the takeaway. DJ Johnson, John Daly, Mike Austin and quite a few long drivers use(d) this technique. I use it when I’m swinging my best and hope to have it mastered sometime soon. I have tried everything like the one piece takeaway, but I just can’t make it work and feel relaxed too.”
- bscinstnct: “Man, if Tony could just get a little more confidence on Sunday with his putter. He’d basically be DJ. Just want to see him play his best a few times; he’d really light it up.”
- mosesgolf: “TF said in an interview that he can easily attain 190plus ball speeds but won’t go there due to consistency and accuracy issues. Plus, it’s an avenue for injury to swing that hard.”
- cardoustie: “Longest on tour if he wanted to be.”

Underrated, but, people always wanted to swing like him because he was very consistent, is Bruce Lietzke

Sam Snead. He could reach back and really bomb it and you didn’t see the effort. This all with older equipment. Players had to swing smooth to hit that smaller sweet spot. Thanks for putting up this question.

Take a look at Wild Bill Mehlhorn. Google . ““lLost Swings Biill Mehlhorn”. See Hogan’s quote about this player! All joints bent , relaxed. As they should be!

Seve Ballesteros could swing as smooth as anybody IMO.

Yeah because he wasn’t too concerned about where the swing directed the ball, he was more concerned about spraying it all over the map with that unique and strange action of his lol
