Forum Thread of the Day: “If you had to pick one driver based on sound…”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from BenSeattle who asks fellow GolfWRX members what driver they would choose to buy if the decision was based purely on the sound made at contact. There are a wide variety of drivers mentioned, and our members also display a diverse taste in acoustics, with some enjoying a loud crack off the face of the driver, and others preferring a low pop.

Here are what a few of our members have said on the subject, but make sure to check out the entire thread at the link below.

  • Mcgeeno: “My favorite ever was an OG Ping Rapture with 10 cotton balls in the head. Some people thought I miss hit it because it was so quiet haha.”
  • IsleOfMan: “I know I definitely wouldn’t buy a Rogue, Epic, or Fusion… they sound dead to me and make me question contact on otherwise good shots.  I guess I like a little more lively metallic sound, which I’ve never had an issue with in Cobra heads (I’ve had F6, F7, and now F8+).”
  • gripandrip: “While I currently play an SZ (which Sounds great on solid shots), the best sounding modern driver I’ve ever had was a Titleist 910 D2. The perfect ‘THWACK’.”
  • BVIChester: “Nike Sasquatch Sumo2. Always thought it made a noise similar to how i imagine a coconut falling out of a tree and connecting with a skull would make.”

My latest favorite would be my 2015 Great Big Bertha. So glad I kept it because the Rogue metals I bought have a dead sound to them. Hard to tell when I’ve hit my best shot from the sound.

B-stone J33 series. Soft metallic “wheck” at impact.

Nothing has the great sound of wood. but that is gone and I think anything Callaway has a great sound. Of course being a former Wood maker I am partial, but you have to admit, if did sound great.

Sound is just so subjective. Those of us that grew up hitting persimmon woods and wooden baseball bats have a completely different opinion than those that grew up hitting metal woods and metal baseball bats.

If poly stuffing is used to weight the clubhead, sound is muffled/refined, as a gun with a silencer.
(unlike cotton, poly doesnt absorb moisture)

I like the sound of my Cobra ZL. Others have commented on the quality of the sound.

Worst sounding: Calllaway FT-3….sounded like a muffled plastic thump… Best sounding: agree with prior post above/ Nike Sumo2.

This is an easy one. The old MacGregor V-Foil Eye O Matics had a sound like you were hitting dingers with a little league baseball bat. Always turned heads when hitting balls on the range.

Why Ludvig Aberg is my new favorite player – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing one of the new sensations in the world of golf – Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year-old finished solo second at the Masters a couple of weeks ago, and gained many plaudits, including from several WRXers.

One member, RoyalMustang, took to the forums to explain why Aberg is now their favorite player, saying:

“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.

Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”

And our members have been reacting and sharing their positive takes on the young Swede.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • redfirebird08: “Ludvig has a great attitude, a great smile, and a great golf swing.”
  • otto6457: “I’m very lucky to have talked with Ludde several times at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech.  He’s a truly nice guy and very friendly.  Always said hello when we passed each other in the club house and was always smiling. Watching him hit balls on the range was a joy.  He has “that sound” and trajectory to die for.  There were many times he was out on the range in 30+ mph winds just hitting the most beautiful shots that just seemed to ignore the wind.  World class ball striker. And yes……..I am a fan boy.”
  • konklifer: “I like him. In an era of endless waggles and laboring, his swing and pace of play are a joy to watch.
