Forum Thread of the Day: “What irons have given you the most enjoyment ever?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from i*windows who asked fellow GolfWRX members what set of irons gave or continue to provide the most enjoyment while out on the course. There are a whole host of irons mentioned, from different club-making eras too, with the unique feel the irons give the individual often making the difference.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion at the link below and have your say.

  • TheInfidel: “Just put a set of 900 Forged in the bag with ProjX LX 6.5s – WOW.  Different class of ball flight.  Crazy forgiving
  • craz-e: “My first set of blades the Mizuno MP68’s. They gave me a greater enjoyment in hitting golf shots and a greater love for the game in general.
  • jar59: “Best scoring clubs, best clubs in the wind and best feeling sweet spot were my 985 Tourney Customs with reverse muscleback and rounded toe.  I played them in 2 thru pw (10) from 1976 thru 1981
  • BCULAW: “Ping S56 with Your Issue S400 soft stepped twice, purple dot at +1.  I would never have guessed the specs would work in a million years,  but these were the absolute best feeling and performing irons I have ever hit. Pure joy to play.
  • mogc60: “Probably owned 50 sets of irons in my life and absolutely without question, the best irons I ever played were MacGregor VFoil M25 blades with Satin ProjectX 6.5. Most consistent, best feeling, best ball flight.

Ping i25 with the Ping CFS stuff shaft. Still have the Eye-2 Gorge lob wedge that I got at the same time. Regret trading those now.

      That’s how you would rate a woman… not a golf club… unless yer a jerk0ff gearhead

In tennis, it’s the strings that are the performance factor and the frame only holds the strings. In golf, the clubhead only impacts the ball for 0.0005 seconds while the shaft affects the swing action. Ignorant golf and tennis players think it’s the club and frame that gives enjoyment… because of the colors and shapes. Oh well, as long as it sells equipment.

Droop, kick, torque so much more important for consistency, accuracy and enjoyment all derive from the shaft, not the clubhead.

$150+ for each iron , with a $30.00 shaft with a fancy paint job, is a con game.

Shaft dynamics is too complex for the gearhead brainlet… the back of the clubhead is all that matters. It’s love at first sight for these gearhead jerk0ffs.

A really beautiful set of clubs in every way – Adams A4 Forged PX 6.0 shafts (as pictured), getting ready to give them to my son (hard to part with, but they were only my travel set). However, shot my lowest round (74) ever with Tommy Armour 845s. Honestly the closest set of irons to the A4s, are my current gamers – PXG 0811s with NS Pro Modus3 105 shafts that I purchased through the PXG for Heroes Program last month.

Mizuno MX 17. First set of irons I had that weren’t hand me downs from the 80’s. I legitimately gained 20 yards on every club over the Par Champs I had in the bag before those. Took my game to another level and made me enjoy golf 100x more.

Ping Eye 2+, hands down best set ever, got them out of the closet this year, re-gripped them and they are in my bag. Easy to hit and feel great!

PING ZING2… hottest heads ever… straight flight only… no draw or fade because of the extreme head weighting.

From the Forums: How are you liking TaylorMade’s Qi10 fairway woods?

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing TaylorMade’s new Qi10 fairway woods. WRXer ‘ace036’ plans on testing them in the next few weeks, saying: “from how they look from address and frame the ball is much more appealing to my eye versus my current Paradym fairway woods.” And our members have been sharing their positive feedback in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Edwardsr: “I got fit into the Qi10 core model with Ventus TR Black 8X and it’s absolutely amazing for me.During the fitting with my 12-15 swings with it, it was the most efficient combo I’ve ever tested, tons of 1.48 smash and 3 or 4 1.49 smash (which I don’t think I’ve ever gotten on 3 wood on a launch monitor).”
  • MiloMalt: “No complaints and so far only high praise for my Qi10 Tour 3 and 5 wood. I’m getting great numbers and a nice penetrating ball flight with great height whereas with my old TSi2 4 wood it was spinny and ballooning and short because of that.”
  • courcy75: “The Qi10 Tour 3 wood I just put in play has been outstanding for me. Finally found something I like as much as the 07 burner tp.”

From the Forums: Should I play a 3-wood or 5-wood?

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing 3-woods, 5-woods and bag setups. WRXer ‘Cole Fleming’ is currently unsure of his setup, and reached out to fellow members, saying:

“Thoughts on people playing 3 vs 5-wood? I have a high SS 118 with driver 280s + carry. I really never use my 3-wood now as my course doesn’t really have the need unless I move to the back tees. I usually carry it about 260+. I’m ultimately looking for something easier to hit and maybe start trying to use it off the tee some to keep me out of trouble.

I also play a 7-wood. Love it so don’t want them to be to0 close. Ive never even considered or looked at a 5-wood. I have a fitting today so I’m sure I could test them, but wanted somewhat of an idea going into it to tell the fitter so I’m not swinging so many clubs.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the matter, as well as mentioning what has worked best for their game.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • pu_golf88: “I’m dropping the 3 wood this year for a 5 wood. I hit my drivers a similar distance as you and find that my 3 wood isn’t a fairway finder, I really only use it if there’s a dogleg where a driver would go thru where I want to land the ball. I think a 5 wood goes far enough to use it as a fairway finder off the tee when I want more distance than hitting my 3 driving iron.”
  • T626G: “I myself have decided to try a 5-wood. Never really had much luck or need with a 3-wood. Should be easier to hit. I’m going to cut it down a 1/2″ just to help control it and swing easier.”
  • jedc: “Adjustable 5-wood turned down to 4-wood loft (and open looking face is nice). I had a fitting last month and really liked the PXG Black Ops 5-wood.”
