Lexi Thompson withdraws from the Women’s British Open to “recharge.” Read her full statement.

Published

on

Lexi Thompson announced via Instagram Wednesday that she has withdrawn from next week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open, as mentioned in the Morning 9.

Thompson says she needs to “recharge my mental batteries” and she has not “felt like myself for quite some time.”

The 23-year-old said “the events of the past year and a half (on and off the golf course)” have “taken a tremendous toll on me both mentally and emotionally.” This is presumably a reference to her mother’s cancer diagnosis and the CME Group Tour Championship penalty drama.

Thompson says she plans to return to action at the Indy Women in Tech Championship on Aug. 16.

Her full post, below.

Hi everyone,  I wanted to let you know that I am officially withdrawing from the 2018 Ricoh Women's British Open.  It is extremely difficult for me not to play in this prestigious Major, but I realized recently that I need to take some time to work on myself. The events of the past year and a half (on and off the golf course) have taken a tremendous toll on me both mentally and emotionally. I have not truly felt like myself for quite some time.  I am therefore taking this time to recharge my mental batteries, and to focus on myself away from the game of professional golf.Thank you all so much  for your continued support. I hope to see everyone soon as I plan to defend my title at the 2018 Indy Women in Tech Championship. Lexi

While many will see great significance in Thompson’s decision to step away, Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte has a more balanced take.

Just an aside… I’m sure her social media makes her money, but maybe a break from that would save her a lot of time…

It is just weird that she will return mid-August. That is not such a long time to really get away from it all if you ask me..

Exactly right, IMO Lexi should take a minimum of 6 months, maybe a year, with appropriate therapy, and dont mean pumping iron and the like. Those are simply distractions.

I had no idea she had to face all of those challenges off the course. The garbage that she had to endure on the course would have been more than enough to merit some time away. Tough kid no doubt. Hope she finds some peace of mind.

Bryson DeChambeau reports 403-yard driver carry

Published

on

He may not have been in tournament action last week, but Bryson DeChambeau was continuing his hunt for added distance and reported reaching some eye-popping milestones.

On his social media channels, DeChambeau posted an image of his launch monitor, and the numbers speak for themselves, with a carry distance of 403 yards combined with 211mph ball speed.

As Bryson added in the post, those numbers were achieved without the 48-inch driver which he is hoping to put into play at next month’s Masters.

As many have noted on social media, should Bryson replicate that drive at Augusta National, then the Californian would be left with less than 50 yards for his approach to the devilishly difficult opening hole.
