Luke List, using just his wedge to putt, takes JT to the 18th hole
Typically in match play, a golfer looks to gain an advantage over his opponent in order to win the match, such as hitting more fairways, more greens, or making more putts. While playing against Justin Thomas in the 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, however, Luke List bent his putter, and he resorted to using his wedge on the greens for the remainder of the match. Quite the disadvantage.
“I was walking off the 6th tee, and I was a little unhappy about the way I was feeling, a little under the weather,” List explained after the round. “And I thought it was like a brush area and I just kind of swiped my putter, and it turned out to be a wall. It bent like a fraction of an inch. So unfortunately I couldn’t use it the rest of the way. Stupid on my part.”
List was 3-down through seven holes, playing against the No. 2 golfer in the world. Game over, right?
Well… List remained 3-down until the 15th hole when he dropped this bellied-wedge into the hole from off the green.

Then, List rolled in this short birdie “putt” with his wedge on No. 16 to go 1 down.
From 3-down to 1-down, all with a sand wedge as his putter.

In the end, List lost to JT 2-down. But the fact List forced the match to even go to the 18th shows a lot of fight.

Spotted: Nate Lashley’s Ping PLD “Wolverine” putter
Ping PLD putters have been a very common site on profesional tours. Pros seem to gravitate toward the PLD line’s custom options and precision milling. We have seen the PLD line expanded over the years, but we haven’t seen too many, if any, large mallets.
This week we spotted a PLD putter in Nate Lashley’s bag that has a similar look to the old Ping Wolverine head shape. This putter is a large mallet with the famous “claws” on the outside and oval center that housed the alignment aid.
Nick’s putter has the PLD logo on the back but also looks like it might have an insert installed on the face. It is hard to tell but at the address picture, it looks like the face is a lighter material than the rest of the putters. The putter is center-shafted and should be face-balanced with a high MOI for stability and forgiveness on mishits. The sole is completely milled and has no markings of name or technologies that might be present in the head. A single white site line is on the top of the putter for alignment.
Nick’s putter is finished off with a chrome steel shaft and a Super Stroke Zenergy Flatso 2.0 grip in black and white.

Hey putting has always been a weak spot for me and I use a wedge all the time to putt with, usually with same or better results, lol
Cpl years ago someone in PGA TOUR broke their putter and made like 4 birdies with a wedge on back 9….i forget who and maybe it wasn’t that long ago buy someone did, lol

Playing solo golf in the evening with a 7 iron and a sand wedge and two pocketfuls of balls, I would putt with the SW. I got good at it … with 10 balls on the greens. Meanwhile gearheads are worried about their ball bouncing and skidding off their $500 highly machined custom putter face. Talk about neurotic!!

I have forgotten my putter twice, used my sand wedge for each round. Honestly didn’t putt nay worse and I may have been slightly better. It’ll make you focus on your “pendulum” due to having to strike the ball on the equator. I’ve heard some say it’s a good drill for practice?

If you use a SW to putt you can practice two putting modes… (1) a pendulum stroke from the shoulders, and, (2) a hinged stroke at the wrists… just like Nicklaus and Palmer did crouched over the ball and stroking from the wrists. You can master both styles and use them when needed.
