Tiger Woods, Ernie Els named 2019 President Cup captains. Woods hopes to be playing captain
Ernie Els and Tiger Woods will be the captains for the 2019 Presidents Cup, PGA Tour and Presidents Cup officials announced Tuesday.
The two veterans of the international team competition will lead the United States and International sides, respectively, at Royal Melbourne Golf Course in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Els has competed in the Presidents Cup eight times (1996, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013), tied for most by an International Team member. Woods, also an eight-time U.S. Presidents Cup Team member (1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013), holed the winning putt for the United States in 2009, 2011 and 2013. Both were assistant captains at Liberty National in 2017.
“Ernie Els and Tiger Woods have each been part of the fabric of the Presidents Cup as competitors and as ambassadors to the event,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Ernie carries the flag for international golf as a legendary figure both on and off the golf course, while Tiger has been one of the most transcendent athletes the sport has ever seen.”
Officials also announced minor format changes and eligibility requirements for the competition. Players will be required to play a minimum of one match prior to the final-round singles competition. Previously, players had to play twice. Additionally, captains will now have four captains picks, rather than two.
Woods told Commissioner Monahan he’d like to be a playing captain, provided he makes the team on points.
“Hale [Irwin] did it in the first year, the inaugural event. So I just wondered if that was an opportunity and he said that there’s nothing in the bylaws that says I can’t do it…I would like to get to a point where I would have to make that decision, get to where I’m playing well enough where either I could make the team on points.”
Els and Woods have plenty of history in the competition. Most notably, the two dueled for three obscenely pressure-packed holes at Fancourt in 2003. With the cup tied after 35 matches, the No. 1 (Woods) and No. 3 players in the world faced off, halving three-straight holes before running out of light. Captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player elected to end the competition in a tie.
The pair of major champions admitted feeling more pressure over these two putts than at any point in their storied careers. Take a trip down Presidents Cup memory lane: Watch Woods hole a slippery 12-footer, forcing Els, his knees knocking, to make from six feet.
The 2019 matches will be Dec. 12-15 at Royal Melbourne.
