Steph Curry hopes not to embarrass himself in Web.com Tour event
Steph Curry, who’s fresh off a 2017 NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors, is taking his talents to professional golf after accepting a sponsors’ exemption into the 2017 Web.com Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic the week of July 31. The event is held at TPC Stonebrae (par 70; 7,100 yards) in Hayward, California, which is located just 30 minutes from Oracle Arena where the Warriors play, so this is basically a home game for Curry.
Curry currently carries a 2.2 handicap index, according to Golf Digest, and as he told the San Francisco Chronicle, he’s excited about the opportunity but also hopes not to embarrass himself.
“When I found out I was getting a sponsor exemption, I had a lot of emotions because I love to play golf; it’s a passion of mine,” Curry told the San Francisco Chronicle. “But to be able to play against the next and best golf professionals will be a huge honor and huge treat.
“I’m looking forward to hopefully not embarrassing myself, but mostly having a lot of fun and hopefully raising a lot of money for the foundation…I’m going to try to keep it in the fairway.”
For reference, here’s Curry’s golf swing, which is from a video uploaded to YouTube in 2016.
Of course, golf fans, and possibly Web.com Tour players, will be appalled at this decision by the tournament sponsors. They’ll say: “How could they let a 2.2 handicap take away a spot from a real golfer!”
To that I answer: Probably because you’re going to watch the Ellie Mae Classic now to see if Steph Curry can break 100, whereas you probably wouldn’t have even heard of the tournament otherwise. Charity, money, interest, ratings… all valid things to consider when deciding who to provide a sponsors’ exemption.
Also, the tournament is no stranger to high profile athletes. NFL Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice played in the event three times. Sure, he’s never finished better than second-to-last in three outings, but someone has to finish DFL, right? Might as well be Jerry Rice or Steph Curry. And let’s not get it twisted, Steph will finish in last place. It’s more of a lock than the Warriors were to win the 2017 NBA Finals once they acquired Kevin Durant.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.
For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- btyh: “Holy offset.”
- Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
- bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing
As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
What happens when 4 #PGATOUR pros take a day off?
Luckily, the cameras were rolling.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

It’s obviously good for the WEB.com tour because I would rather be at the range than waste my time watching minor league golf. However, I will watch his round and see how he fares. It’s a good thing.

The author seems REALLY certain that Steph is gonna finish in last place. That’s no guarantee. And if golfers are really serious about “growing the game” like everyone CLAIMS to be, why not give him the spot? He’s one of the biggest, most recognizable athletes in the world that happens to be a scratch golfer who loves the game. Good for business – therefore good for golf.
