FTF: Diamonds in the Rough, Stiffest Shaft You’ve Ever Hit?

The GolfWRX forums exist so golfers have access to the latest equipment releases, hottest discussions, real equipment reviews, best instruction, new technologies and everything golf you can imagine. So if you love golf, the GolfWRX forums are your sanctuary.
In the From the Forums weekly feature, we bring you the hottest, most buzz-worthy topics from our forums for your convenience. I’ll be your trusty tour guide to navigate the latest buzz. Here’s a peek behind the curtain into golf’s sanctuary.
Total Bag Overhaul for 2017
Sounds like WRXer PerserveringGolf is no longer persevering with the same equipment for 2017. He writes that in light of an increasing handicap, he’s totally overhauling his bag, adding the classic advice: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always gotten.”
As you’d expect, many in forums are making similar efforts. See how WRXers are switching it up.
Diamonds in the Rough
Love this thread. For as often as we research the best weaponry, demo it, and end up put it in the bag, you can never predict when you’ll find a diamond in the rough. This collection of WRXers’ stories of unexpected game-changing equipment is must-read stuff. Check out the thread.
Stiffest Shaft You’ve Ever Hit?
Ever tried hitting an adamantium shaft? (X-Men joke). But seriously, here’s a fun one: Tyler Harris asks, “What’s the stiffest shaft you ever hit, and what did it feel like?” The replies are entertaining and very funny. See the thread.
Expired Pebble Beach Ams
With the peculiarity that is the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am now in our rearview, it’s not too soon to suggest (as TM_Hoyer does) which amateurs we’d rather not see any more of. On a personal level, Chris Berman comes to mind. For Hoyer, Gary Mule Deer ought to trot off a California cliff.
Check out the thread for plenty of hot takes and the usual split on the matter of Bill Murray.
Never Too Early for Major Predictions
If you haven’t checked the calendar recently, the Masters is fewer than 60 days away. And with a decent sampling of player form at our disposal (thanks wraparound season), it’s not too soon to start talking about who’s going to be favored at Augusta. And if you give a golf fan a Masters prediction, he’s going to want to discuss the winners of the U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship.
Check out the thread for all the early prognostication you can handle.

What GolfWRXers are saying about PXG’s apparent new golf ball

In our forums, our members have been discussing PXG’s apparent foray into the golf ball market. With the ball landing on the USGA Conforming List recently, WRXer ‘Scott406’ has reached out to fellow members for their thoughts on the new addition from PXG, who have been sharing their takes in our forum.
The Bob Parsons-founded company has provided no details on any upcoming launch or technical details of the ball or balls.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- snagy2000: “$49.99 is the rumor.”
- golfinbrad: “Not sure why club companies want to get in the golf ball market. Way too many choices already. I look at Mizuno. Decent ball, but I’m not going to drop top dollar to try a ball when you know Pro V, TP5, etc., have already been proven. If PXG handles like the clubs, they will run some crazy low sales. Maybe it will work, and I’ll be wrong. Not the first time.”
- Highlander24: “Alignment aid looks like Vice to me.”

Best players irons of 2023 – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing the best ‘Players’ irons of 2023. WRXer ‘odshot68’ kicks off the thread saying, “Looking to get a new set of players irons this spring and wondering what you guys like. Distance control is very important; I’m not a fan of irons with hotspots,” and our members have been selecting their favorites from recent releases in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- noodle3872: “Titleist T100/T100S should be in the conversation.”
- sadclevelandsports: “I love my T100s, but recently tried the new Cobra CBs, and they are just as high quality.”
- edwelly: “I have been fortunate enough to have several nice sets of irons. A couple of Maura sets and, most recently, the Bridgestone J40s. Today I took out my new Srixon ZX5/ZX7s, and they are phenomenal irons. I cannot recommend those enough. “
- KevCannon: “T100 should be on the shortlist to try.”

‘My grandma just smoked a 9-iron 200 yards’

In our forums, our members have been discussing whether or not there is a ‘max usable iron distance’. WRXer ‘Barfolomew’ kicks off the thread with the eye-catching title of ‘My grandma just smoked a 9 iron 200 yards’ before delving into the subject matter, saying:
“Will manufacturers forever be chasing more iron distance or is there a max usable iron distance?
You could see very weak players always wanting more distance vs very good players thinking gaps….. or is that not true. In 2050 they are still gonna be saying these are the longest irons on the market, way further than the 2049s or will it max out.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Ger21: “Distance sells, and a very large percentage of golfers is always looking for more distance. But on the other hand, there’s only so much distance you can get out of a given clubhead speed.”
- Grouchykona: “I feel clickbaited . . was expecting to see a video of a yoked out grandma crushing 9 irons.”
- golfinbrad: “I think companies have done a pretty good job making irons for all types of players. Might be more options now than ever, or at least in a long time. I will say companies market distance most because it sells. Maybe not for your better players or at least more knowledgeable players, but it does work. Every spring there are those guys who show up at the range with the latest and greatest, thinking this club will take their game to the next level.”

The stiffest shaft (ahem) I’ve ever hit was a BiMatrix, years ago. Many, many years ago when I had some speed. I tried for a couple of months but put it away. It amazes me that Bubba can hit his with ease. Don’t know where that combo came from but interesting none the less.
