What you need to know about Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s new commissioner

Published

on

The PGA Tour Policy Board announced yesterday that Jay Monahan, currently the Tour’s Chief Operating Officer, will take over as commissioner on January 1. This means, among other things, no more Ice Bucket Challenges from outgoing commissioner, Tim Finchem.

And while golf fans are familiar with Finchem and his legacy, most are probably asking, “Who is this Monahan guy?” Well, here’s the answer.

Monahan joined the PGA Tour in 2008. He has served as Deputy Commissioner since April 2014. He assumed the additional title of COO earlier this year (Finchem also served as DC and COO prior to his appointment).

Monahan graduated from Trinity College in 1993. He was a four-year member of the golf team and a Division II Academic All-American his senior year.

He then earned a Masters in Sport Management from UMass Amherst in 1995 and initially worked in the advertising sector with Arnold Advertising and Bob Woolf Associates. Following this, he served as the director of global sponsorships and branding programs at EMC Corporation.

From there, Monahan was the executive director of IMG Worldwide. He was the first tournament director of the then-Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston.

Immediately prior to working at the Tour, Monahan was the executive vice president of Fenway Sports Group and then the Executive Director of The Players Championship.

He was named the Tour’s Senior Vice President for Business Development in 2010, and was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer in March of 2013. According to the Tour, his role included overseeing business development, corporate marketing and partnerships, title sponsor relations, retail licensing, and media sales.

Quite the pedigree.

For some hot takes on the incoming commish’s top priorities, check out what Geoff Shackelford and Jeff Babineau had to say.

Not really given Fincham lucked into the Tiger Era. Did he honestly do anything that even a half brain dead chimp couldn’t have done for The Tour?

GolfWRX is on site this week at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for the PGA Championship.

While we see fewer equipment changes and new gear seeding at major championships, we get a look at custom gear and looks into the bags of players we rarely see, which is just as exciting. In the case of the PGA Championship, this means a look at the gear some of the PGA Professionals who qualified for the tournament will be gaming, and LIV players, such as Jon Rahm and Patrick Reed.

Check out links to all our albums from Valhalla below and check back throughout the week as we continue to update.

From the grounds at Quail Hollow, we have our usual assortment of general galleries and WITBs — including a look at left-hander Akshay Bhatia’s setup. Among the pullout albums, we have a look inside Cobra’s impressive new tour truck for you to check out. Also featured is a special look at Quail Hollow king, Rory McIlroy.

Be sure to check back throughout the week as we add more galleries.
