Mitchell Golf Equipment Company seeking a buyer
Mitchell Golf Equipment Company, industry leader in loft and lie machines and other golf club bending equipment, is seeking a buyer in hopes of absorption into a larger company. Reached by phone, company founder Ed Mitchell said consolidation would allow the Ohio-based company to reduce overhead and capitalize on efficiencies amid market contraction.
Michell, whose 1988 Steelclub Angle Machine was a custom club fitting game-changer, feels seeking a buyer is the best move for the immediate future, in light of larger industry trends.
“The golf industry has taken some hits and shrunk,” Mitchell said. “There’s still no growth in the industry. There’s consolidation still taking place. I feel at this point in time that Mitchell golf should be absorbed into some other entity to share expenses and overhead to maintain market share. That’s where I think a lot of other small golf companies are going to end up before it’s said and done.”
“With today’s economy in general and the lack of expansion in the golf market, it is time to merge Mitchell Golf products with another golf-related company….to continue to be competitive.”
Mitchell indicated that the decision isn’t a referendum on company performance, but rather, an acknowledgement of the reality of the marketplace: Increased operational costs, a shrinking market, and even with constant market share, the volume of sales is necessarily in decline. Add to that decreased markups industry wide, and it isn’t difficult to see why smaller companies in the golf space are suffering.
If/when a buyer is found, sale will include the Mitchell name and its brands of Steelclub and TourGauge, as well as all trademarks, proprietary designs, intellectual property, inventory, equipment, fixtures, etc.

I’ve met Ed Mitchell. He is one of the most intense, earnest, honest, hardworking people in the industry. Check that — IN THE HISTORY of the industry. His business is a golf equipment treasure.

Dick’s could buy it and absorb it into Golfworks. It could be a good compliment to Maltby’s stuff.

What Grizz said is true, but you could see it was coming. How many people do you know that play golf have Golfsmith clubs? I have played a set of irons(P2’s) and still play Golfsmith hybrids(Viper). I play Callaway woods and irons now. Everybody wants name recognition clubs and accessories in their bag. Golfsmith and small component outfits have a tough time selling and marketing their wares in the marketplace today.

The OME’s have one. They have taken out the little componet clubmaker and Mitchel is taking the hit. When Golfsmith stop selling, designing and making componets. The end was coming. Unfortunately now all that stands in the way of absolute domination is Golfworks. It’s a shame too, golf is once again becoming the rich man’s sport.
