The latest Olympic WD takes things to another level

Published

on

Now even golfers with no chance of making the Olympics are bowing out.

Andy Sullivan, who would be fifth in line to replace either Danny Willett or Justin Rose should one of the two withdraw from the Olympics, has announced he’s withdrawing himself from consideration for Great Britain.

Hat tip to Geoff Shackelford for relaying this bit of unreal information from the Nuneaton News. Sullivan told the outlet:

“I mean this as no disrespect to the Olympics but for me even if I get in the team I would not be going to Rio. You have to look at where it is being held, there is a dangerous virus going round, plus the security is said to be not water tight, they are all reasons why I just cannot go. It is a dangerous place to go and when you run the rule over the risk, it is not one I will be taking.”

No worries, Andy. It wasn’t a risk you were going to be taking anyway.

And for those of you playing Olympic Withdrawal Bingo at home, here’s a handy list from Golfweek of the numbers that have been called already.

Nice to see that the internet snarkathon continues.

What Sullivan said is true in every detail.

THE RISKS OF RIO ARE MUCH GREATER THAN ANY POTENTIAL REWARD. THE SMART ATHLETES WILL STAY HOME./

Yeah this was not Ben’s best effort. First, at the rate of all of the dropouts, Sullivan IS IN FACT potentially in line to qualify. Guy is ranked 40th in the world. Not really a hack. Second, this wasn’t as if he scheduled a press conference to divulge this information. Sounds like he was asked about it and responded appropriately. Third, watching him play Crossfield in matchplay on youtube was hilarious. Guys seems like a really down to earth friendly dude.

How scary must it be in Rio now, when even guys from Zimbabwe are dropping out?

It would be SUPER COOL if all three who medal (Gold, Silver and Bronze) are ‘Yanks. That would be sweet. Spieth, DJ, Bubba, Zach Johnson or Lefty Mickelson, please.

If things were like they used to be when professional athletes were not allowed in the Olympics, I don’t think you would see anyone withdraw. Those people trained for years to have the honor, yes it’s an honor, to take part in the Olympics. It’s a chance of a lifetime, but I don’t think professional athletes look at it the same way. With all the withdrawals, the caliber of golfers with be slightly diminished and the best of the best will not be.

Ben…was he asked about going and then responded? You make this sound like he released an official statement. I think you should clarify.

If he was asked about going and then responded accordingly, then this article you wrote is just garbage click bait that belongs on some stupid buzzfeed type of website

The Olympics is what all sportsmen and women aspire to. It is the pinnacle of their career and an Olympic medal and the opportunity to represent your country is highly prized by all athletes except top Golfers and Tennis players. These overpaid, egotistical, super talented sportsman only think of themselves and show very little patriotism with a few notable exceptions including Andy Murray and John McEnroe.

Many sports are dying to get into the Olympics and here we have golfers and tennis players making a mockery of the greatest event in the world. They should be ashamed of themselves and Rory will no longer get support from me.

Ha! “Sportsmen and women aspire to” barf

Right…they aspire to go to a hell hole with lax security, high crime, brain eating amoeba in the water, a virus being spread by insects, and corruption…right.

This sounds way better than playing golf in some beautiful safe place with the opportunity to make hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars…right, who would want to do that?

The IOC should just drop golf from the Rio games now. If they don’t this year or 2020, I’m guessing they will for 2024. What a joke it’s going to be.

    • Jack

      Jul 7, 2016 at 4:43 am

No they need to drop Rio. It’s been a disaster even before it’s begun.

I use to like the games when the participants were amateurs. When you get professional athletes, basketball, baseball, etc. you have all kinds of conflicts. Golf is a different animal, throw in a mosquito, a country in turmoil, and you have the ingredients for all kinds of reactions. I am not sure if in that situation what I would do!!! But I don’t judge anyone’s reasons for playing or for not.

Poor form Ben, not your best effort. Really disappointed to read that a team of editorial staff decided to print this article.

If Ben wants to justify making snide, derogatory comments about a really genuine, funny, talented professional who is just being frank about prospective risks, then in my view Golf WRX should buy Ben a ticket to Rio and expect him to spectate for all the practice and competition rounds on a course next to coastal mangroves that are, presumably, teeming with mosquitoes!!

    Buckle up Ben.

    Are YOU man enough!!

It is pretty funny that Ben goes out of his way to point out that Andy Sullivan is not in the running for the Olympic team, and does it so condescendingly. Where are you in the rankings, Benny?

  15. ron

    Jul 6, 2016 at 5:10 pm

Was this statement: “No worries, Andy. It wasn’t a risk you were going to be taking anyway” necessary? Unwarranted condescension.

      Steve,

I’m sorry you find much of my writing meaningless. I’d like to point to the difference between the Buzzroll section–which we present as the “lighter side of GolfWRX,” and often features social media derived and driven pieces–and other equipment and tour-related content on the website.

Also, criticizing my writing is fine, but content decisions are made as a group; I’m not some rogue free agent hacking the website and uploading my content. I’d suggest steering clear of the Buzzroll section in the future, and you’ll enjoy the website much more.

      Best.

It’s always to destroy a person with mean criticism from the cheap seats. Lots of your stuff is decent and worthwhile to read, Ben. You are someone’s son and perhaps someone’s father. You are meaningful. This stuff isn’t life or death. Rock on.

Not to many hulking athletes on that list so I kind of doubt it. Instead I believe it shows a lack of importance to most golfers. If I remember right Adam Scott was vocal over a year ago with his opinion that golf shouldn’t be in the Olympics. Lets face it they have four majors every year that are way more important to them plus the Ryder cup and Presidents cup every other year. The Olympics should never have allowed professional athletes in the first place.

Its not the bulking drug its the beta blockers and mind altering drugs out there to help the focus.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
