The story behind Rickie Fowler’s high-tops

Published

on

If you happened to see any of the photos from yesterday’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions practice round, you might have been struck by Rickie Fowler’s sartorial selections.

The 27-year-old face of Puma golf was wearing high-top golf shoes and jogger-style pants.

After you had one of two thoughts (1. “Swag king” or 2. “I miss the days of saddle shoes and metal spikes”) you likely wondered about the reasoning behind Fowler’s bold fashion decision. Well, fear not WRXers, we have the details, courtesy of an email from Cobra Puma’s communications manager.

Grant Knudson, Head of Footwear PUMA Golf explains:

“Each season we work closely with Rickie throughout the apparel and footwear development and design process to ensure we’re pushing the limits when it comes to both performance and style.

During a recent meeting, Rickie expressed interest in wearing a high-top cleated shoe that could be worn with more progressive apparel (joggers style pants). Our design team took inspiration from a prior Puma high-top lifestyle shoe and combined it with the Titan Tour Ignite outsole.

The result is a stylish, cleated performance high-top that includes a lace + Velcro closure.  The apparel team then matched this with a version of our 6 Pocket Pant that has been custom tailored to a jogger silhouette.”

And if you’re a fan of the not-available-for-retail kicks, you may be in luck as a giveaway is in the works. So keep an eye on the Puma social media channels.

Golfers around the world-just chill-we have had high tops already the are called winter boots. I play golf with a guy who has been wearing these for thr last 2 winters, ok I think they aren’t the most attractive footwear but he doesn’t end up with trench foot. His pants have elasticated ankles, I remember wearing these in the 70’s at Ricky’s age, fortunately I grew out of the fashion as I looked ridiculous, sorry Ricky when your kids look back at this years photos they’ll no doubt ask what you were taking for you to think you looked cool, bet they still think the high tops are cool though.

It’s all about marketing. Puma wants to sell stuff and he is their tour spokesperson. Golf equipment and now golf fashion are like the fashion business in general. Come out with new stuff every year to try and cause a buzz and get people to toss last year’s stuff and buy new. The goal is raise sales and boast the stock price of the executives options. Not a criticism, just a fact. Most of it, like most of the silly training do dads won’t do anything for your game. If they make you happy, then do it. If you like high top shoes, buy them. If you want to wear a jock strap playing golf, do it. But, wearing a jock strap doesn’t make you a jock.

Very interesting. I despise jeans-wearers on golf courses, even if the specific course allows it. This discussion is making me rethink my stance. But not too much, I still hate golf in jeans.

the rules of golf clubs are being re-written as we speak:
Shirts with a collar and golf slacks/shorts are considered appropriate attire. Shorts must be of conservative tailoring no more than 3” above the knee. Tank tops, t-shirts, cut-offs, sweat pants, athletic shorts, swim trunks, tennis shorts, denim, Puuma high-tops and jogger pants are not permitted.

Slow down fellas, this is starting to sound like some of the comments in Facebook. I mean I though the replies in here used to at least show a little class, but this krap is way out of line. Now how about starting over.

Oh, and by the way, Rickie looks like krap, clean it up Rickie.

I’m over 60; I like the look. I like the way he hits a golf ball even more.

As a matter of fact, I can’t wait to wear high tops and shorts sometime soon.

    Whatever.

Wow people are getting really bent out of shape over a pair of shoes and joggers kind of childish guys. You can have your own opinions I get that but they are just shoes. And whoever said get a gang tattoo and move to Compton is just an A**hole, by the way jack and Arnie love Ricky and if you haven’t noticed that when people get old and die young people replace them in a game that’s losing traction all over the world so yeah you should thank Ricky for keeping it interesting. Besides have you seen the new shoes that Nike has come out with? Knit chukkas? And everyone loves those also the air Jordan’s Keegan wears are pretty close to high tops and people would kill for them so troll along losers troll along

“KING” on a hat is not the best way to advertise Cobra. Was watching an interview from his left side yesterday, could only see “ING” Thought he changed to PING for a sec.

The move to more athletic gear has helped the game grow and has helped golfers perform. I think the move to high tops is another positive. Think back to Rory’s recovery from the ankle injury. He had to slide the left foot out instead of posting up and letting it pronate. This is a very common adjustment golfers who keep a firm left foot have to make. The slide step is probably most prominent in Bubba or Patrick Reed’s swing. I’d be curious what teaching professionals, rather than fashion police, think the effect greater ankle support might have in helping someone who prefers to keep a stable left side.

As for joggers, not such a far cry from knickers, which we celebrate in golf. Everybody likes to reflect fondly on Payne Stewart’s “quirkiness” because he was part of the crew. Rickie is a little bit different; he’s also the Player’s Champion and probably the most popular player among junior golfers under 12 (but see Spieth). I don’t see a problem. Grow the game or there won’t be anything to celebrate BUT the good ole days.

Got to agree with you Sam. I like the high tops due to the fact I have ankle issues. I played in the past with Chucky Taylor Converse tennis shoes or Van’s skateboard shoes. If I wear regular golf shoes I have to wear my ankle braces. I also do the “foot slide” thing for the very reason you stated. Glad to see someone else understands ankle issues

Golfwear checked out of “honoring the game” a long time ago when corporate logos started covering shirts and hats.

Nevertheless, I’m okay with Rickie wearing this. Now, just keep Kevin Stadler out of this kind of satorial splendor.

Just stop it with the stereotype. The equipment has changed allowing puny guys to hit the ball a long ways. So, let the look of the game change as well. Definitely won’t help or hurt his game.

Whoa, first he’s a lady man from a comment below, and now he’s a South Central gangbanger?? LOL. Talking about stretches. It’s hilarious how far everyone is reaching to bash on the guy for wearing something a little strayed from the norm. I’d also like to know what the final form is for someone who hits the ball 300yds, wears joggers and high tops, has a model gf, has a ‘gang tatoo’, and relocates to Compton?

I’m not saying you have to like her decision, but don’t go around making generalizations without even attempting to show empathy. She is still a person, after all; one has just as much value as you and me.

Somebody get Arnie or Jack to call Rickie and tell him to respect the game and not bring the circus to it by dressing like a clown with them silly leggings.

    • Brian

      Jan 7, 2016 at 9:52 am

I’d be willing to bet you’re the same type of person who’ll make this statement in one breath, and then in the next, ponder how to grow the game. Whether you like it or not, time marches on. No one’s forcing you to wear the outfit, and regardless, Rickie’s got the game to back up whatever he wants to wear.

You also fail to realize that the only reason “circuses” ever show up is when people get all huffy about something “scary” and (in this case, marginally) different. If you just let them do it–and by all accounts this definitely isn’t hurting you or anyone else–then perhaps there would be no “circus” to speak of.

And one more thing, this is the same kid who honored Payne Stewart by wearing knickers and high socks a few years back. If anyone respects the game, I’d wager he (Rickie) is one of them. Don’t get mad just because you don’t like a look that absolutely no one is telling you you have to wear.

So how different is that to you trolling around here doing the same thing to the commenters????
You pathetic little hypocrite. Go hide behind yer mom’s skirt like you always do.

        • Brian

          Jan 7, 2016 at 12:45 pm

Okay, man. Not a troll, to be sure. Just someone who cares about everyone (even when we disagree), and who’s willing to admit that I might have been able to word the initial response better.

This is exactly why I almost didn’t post one in the first place. It’s a heated subject (and unrelated to the post about high tops and joggers anyway…so I’m not sure what the OP was really going for) and one that’s pretty polarizing. It doesn’t appear that either of us is going to change the other’s mind, and nothing good will come of this, so we should both walk (or roll, if you’re in an office chair) away.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
