   Still playing my RBZ Stage 2 Bonded driver and loving it. Recently had a chance to do a testing and was lucky enough to get it reshafted with the Accra Fx150 shaft. I’ve gained about 8 yards with the new shaft and have no plans on taking it out of the bag for anytime soon.

   Couldn’t be happier to see a winning tour player with a bag full of confidence. So tired of players at the club telling me about this and that and how it helps direct this and blah blah blah, and they’re still shooting high 70’s and this guy comes in with a used barrel and fires a win against the best players in the world. Good on ya bro.

   When someone backs a truck-full of money up his driveway (well, at least 50% more than he’s getting from Sumitomo), he’ll get comfortable with whatever new gimmick they’re trying to sell.

    This is kind of depressing in that I get all excited thinking about what new clubs Im going to buy and “need” to buy…and then I see a guy win a PGA event (a big boy event at that) with a bunch of crap I could find in the used bin at the Golf Galaxy up the street.

    It might just be the most interesting under-the-radar trend in equipment for 2015 — the return of drivers and fairway woods WITHOUT hosel adjustments. “Return” might be a bad word choice. Because they’ve never gone away completely.

    But we see top-notch players without TM contracts sticking with very old and some new TaylorMades (Lowry, Ryan Palmer, DLIII, etc.) and a flock of current TaylorMade staffers who elect to play a tour-issued AeroBurner.

    It’s kind of an old story, in a way; TaylorMade’s special devotion to tour-issued designs. While Ping and Titleist equipment looks to be indistinguishable from retail.

    I really wonder, as driver designs get more and more highly refined and every 1/10th of a gram of weight distribution gets to be more critical, if tour players will gravitate back toward traditional bonded hosels, which can be bent to their satisfaction. Adjustable hosels are a pretty great innovation for retail customers who never before had the chance to have a driver head bent for them by a tour van technician. But what meaning does that technology really have, for a tour pro like Dustin Johnson who could go to Carlsbad and have two dozen drivers built and bent for him, so that he can pick out the three best while working on a Trackman with four TMaG reps?

      This is a very good point and I think the most obvious example is Tiger Woods who, basically from adjustability day one, has stuck to a glued hosel (no pun intended) even spawning multiple “limited edition” Nike drivers with glued necks. The only people whom an adjustable hosels truly benefits is the club fitter/ retailer as they have to carry fewer lofts and can basically guarantee every club will sell as opposed to the old days when you’d often see odd flexes and lofts left on the rack for potentially years. I personally have no bias as to whether my club has a glued or adjustable hosel but I can totally see why the pros prefer glued- I mean, if you know you need (x) loft for the best results, why do you need the club to adjust at all. I can totally see a time when “standard clubs” will all be adjustable and “pro/tour” models will all be glued- that way everyone has a choice and the pros don’t have to settle for any compromise. Even now though amateurs with adjustable clubs should be pretending they’re glued- once it’s fitted leave it alone!

        Having made the case questioning adjustable hosels, I would happily turn right around and say this; I am glad that we have them available, and I am playing a driver (Jetspeed) that is adjustable. The reason being, just about the only drivers that look good to my eye are those that have been bent open for a tour van (and I have shelled out a whole lot of money for Taylor Made tour heads over the years) or else are cranked all the way down to the “lowest” loft which as we all know simply means cranked open by 1-2 degrees.

        My point is that adjustable hosels are quite useful for retail customers who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to demo different shafts in their favorite driver head, and who can’t get into a tour van to have them bend the hosel of a driver head.

        At the same time, those benefits are sort of irrelevant to an elite tour player who can get whatever he wants, bent however he wants, fitted with an almost unlimited supply of shafts. And so with no discernible benefit, why not go with a “bonded” driver, and avoid all the weight concentrated in the hosel?

    Great win for Shane, but the article is not 100% accurate. His “winning” WITB had no 3 wood in it. He told Tim Barter on Sky Sports (the UK broadcaster) in his pre-round interview on Sunday that he had taken his woods out the bag because he was hitting his driver so well he planned to hit it on every hole meaning he could ditch the woods in favour of an extra wedge. The coverage definitely backs this up as I only recall one hole (excluding par 3s) where he hit less than driver, and on that occasion it was his hybrid club. I know it’s difficult to keep up with every minor change in a player’s bag, but this is definitely not his “winning” bag, this is his bag from Thursday with the article headline changed.

    Regardless, congrats to Shane, he absolutely deserved it after that shot on 10 and the birdie at 18, he must be a shoe-in for the Ryder cup team now too. Good on him!

    Just got rid of a rocketballz 3 wood and 3 hybrid and a nike machspeed black driver to go back to my v-steel 3 wood and r5 5 wood and a Seixon w403AD driver. Didn’t see any improvement with the new stuff and just feel more comfortable with my older clubs.

    And before this page goes away, just want to say well done Shane (and Bubba), now prove that fell players play real golf 66, and boring robot players shoot 72….that proves that a people like to
    see a player “make” a shoot and not a boring 100 mile course with greens the size of a football field
    that make golf expensive, environmental unfriendly, not exciting to play or see and 5 hours to play
    are ruining golf.

      You do not think that Srixon is a major brand? They are huge in Europe and are just opening up again in the states. Keep in mind that the company that owns them also owns Cleveland golf (hence why he has CG wedges as well).
