NCAA Individual Champion uses unique clubs

Published

on

NCAA individual champion Bryson Dechambeau has a bag full of unique golf clubs, including irons and wedges that measure the same length, Jumbo Max XL grips and a 1-of-1 Edel prototype putter.

Also, the Southern Methodist University stand-out has the degrees of loft stamped on his Edel irons instead of the traditional iron-number (6-iron, 7-iron, etc.).

At the NCAA Championships on Monday at Concession Golf Club, Dechambeau’s equipment proved handy as he defeated Cheng-Tsung Pan of University of Washington by one stroke for the individual title. The Mustangs, however, failed to advance to the quarterfinals as a team, finishing in 14th place out of 15 teams.

Watch the video below, as the 2015 NCAA champion goes through his “What’s In The Bag.”

See what GolfWRX members are saying about Dechambeau’s equipment in the forums.

I could understand, but still will not agree with college athletes getting paid. But my opinion is its not like the coach bought/gave him a Ferrari….he helped him acquire golf equipment to better his game. Just like any other sport, just a story like this grabs attention because golf gets more flack because of the price to play the game I guess. I’m sure it happens in baseball, but who would know or care? Hockey is expensive as well, why should a student be expected to not except gear for the game they play while focusing on sport and not working a part time job? His play time would be cut in half and not be where he is.

One interesting set up. Congrats to the kid!

I would enjoy watching this kid on a launch monitor and seeing how his clubs preform!

I have the PVD finish forged Irons that he only made 10 set of and they are amazing. I love the weak lofts and the sole grind on them. I will not be buying another set of irons till they are worn out and cant be regrooved again. Buttery soft.

Good on the kid, i hope he goes a long way with his game and sticks it up the establishment.

The kid has it all down, congrats to him. Wait until the “GURUS” like Pelz, Leadbetter, and the rest of those scam artists who have ruined more than they have helped try to get ahold of him, and oh yea, the Equipment guys try to tell him he needs good clubs, as if they can help a Champion. They will all keep at it until the ruin the kid.

Stick to your guns kid and when you see them coming run as fast as you can. You are great with what got you there.

“Taylormade made for me”????? College golfers can have clubs made and presumably give to them and a football player gets a pizza from a coach and they get in trouble?

It’s part of the equipment necessary for golf just like a helmet or shoulder pads for football players so yeah it’s not against the rules.

Nothing is “very unique.” Google it. Then don’t use it in your headlines.

I caddied for another golfer and played along side Bryson. He did have a game coach and he was crazy good with his method of reading greens which he elaborated on during a practice round. He was a well mannered and respectable person the entire week.
Cool to see him win the NCAA Individuals.
    Just my 2 cents.

Very interesting I’m sure if he made it to the tour there would be a lot of buzz about how he swings. I wonder how light the heads are on the wedges? I would think the swing weight would be way up there. Grip in the palm of the left hand? It’s cool to see that there is more than one way to low scores. He has studied the game, his swing and equipment to get to where he is.

      Jun 3, 2015 at 8:51 pm

to effectively use single length irons all the head weights must be altered as well

    Jun 3, 2015 at 4:38 pm

Interesting, but doubt he can be pesistent with it one he reaches the tour. The big companies will get him back to traditional setup. If he can keep it up that will be impressive. We will see

Are these spoiled Rich Boy clubs or is he a working class kid? Too many rich boys in NCAA golf. The stuff does not look cheap. These rich boys on scholarships make me sick.

    • Golfraven

      Jun 3, 2015 at 4:41 pm

doubt he is the typical working class boy. doubt he needs to take care of the budget.

He’s the best collegiate golfer in the USA, why does his family’s money (if there even is any) bother you? He’s clearly made it on his own merit.

      Jun 5, 2015 at 10:14 pm

Starving kids in Asian and Africa think you’re a spoiled rich boy. But you don’t make them sick because they have more important things to worry about like survival.

It would be great to follow up this article and show the specs for the clubs (including woods). If they are all 37.5 inches the woods appear to be quite short. But what are the lofts? what’s the spacing between each club? what’s the lie angles? And I would love to know what the height is with each club, spin rates, what the distance gaps are.

    • TMTC

      Jun 3, 2015 at 3:51 pm

      My thoughts exactly.
Love to know the lofts and possibly an explanation.
Are they blades, or a combo set?
What shafts are in the irons, etc.

    • Stretch

      Oct 14, 2015 at 1:01 pm

Having tried irons that started at 38″ I can say that keeping consistent swingweights depends on the gap of the length between each one. For a custom built set at 37.5″ I would guess the head weight is the same through the set. Some where I read the lie angle is 72* on the Edel irons. Length wise the 2 iron looks to be 40″, the 3 wood 41 1/2″ and the driver 43″. These lengths would give enough distance with the longer 3 clubs without affecting the DTL spinal angle too much.
Having taught the game for a long time I can tell you the one plane style he uses eliminates the compensation for the length of radius at impact that the centrifugal force tries to create from the center of rotation to the club head. Nearly 100% of all golfers have to either stand up in the posture or have the shoulders extremely open at impact to not hit the ball fat.

Did he say there is some hot metal in the 3W at the heel and toe. Shows that there may be many more modifications we hackers know nothing about which top amateurs and Pros bag.

      Jun 3, 2015 at 11:45 am

I could be wrong but with those heavy grips it may take hot melt in his woods to get the SW back where it wants it. You can see he already did this with his 2i with all the tape. Or maybe he just likes a higher SW feel.

  17. Keith

    Jun 3, 2015 at 10:34 am

I’d be interested to see what yardage he hits each club and what length they are, i.e. is everything standard 7i or 5i length?? So is he choking way down on his wedges??

    • Keith

      Jun 3, 2015 at 11:18 am

Went and found some more info. Each iron is 37.5 inches long, or the equivalent of a 7i. I would think it would be easier to transition to a 3-6i that is the length of a 7i, but would sure be hard getting used to a 37.5in 55d wedge.

I want to see some more research into this approach from the guys at GolfWRX. Please do some testing with same length clubs that we that masses can understand! I have always been a fan of oversized grips, but those suckers are huge…

Good to see. Lesson learned.. The smaller brands can’t cut corners and need to produce a quality and unique product. Time to question your brand loyalty and see what the little guys are up to.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
