Rickie Fowler is using a putter “once reserved” for Tiger Woods

Published

on

Somewhere in the depths of Scotty Cameron’s Tour Department mezzanine was a dusty box — its contents reserved for Tiger Woods, according to a blog post on Scotty Cameron’s website.

Before the 2014 season, Rickie Fowler went to Scotty Cameron’s Putting Studio to meet with Scotty and fitter Paul. He then “got back to basics” with his putting, according to the blog entry, and came away with a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS prototype putter that was once reserved for Tiger Woods.

According to the blog entry, the putter is different than a stock Newport 2 model because of its cleaner top line, shallower face, and crisper lines off the flange.

The Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS became Fowler’s with a few finishing touches.

  • Stamped “Rickie Fowler” on its bumpers.
  • Given a “misted finish.”
  • Built with an “old school stepped shaft.”

See Rickie Fowler’s 2015 WITB for his full putter specs.

The putter now has a Players Championship victory to boast on its resume. Maybe it’s not the 14 majors Tiger Woods has to his name, but it’s a start.

I did read someplace that Ping patent on the Answer putter ran out in 1983 or 84 so that allows others to copy the shape without copyright infringement

HAHA “magic putter” is right. I’m not saying you can’t win when you leave Titleist, because clearly many do, but for real – you leave Scotty’s and your game goes downhill. Didn’t Tiger hold on to the Scotty for a year or 2 after leaving for Nike? Could have even been longer, as I remember he had a bit of trouble dropping the ball and the putter.

    Very cool story WRX.

To compare the design of the Anser 2 and Newport 2 is just, but the quality? LOL

big deal..scotty stole every ping design ever created…

    • I have a ping putter btw

Why wouldn’t he? From a blade player’s stand point the anser is the perfect fit. I was able to personally ask him at a seminar whether he copied the anser or not and he told me right away, “why wouldn’t I? It’s the most amazing putter design made?”

      @joe, @DAPP

These comments are so stupid and get so old so quickly. Every single putter maker out there has this design style (ANSER 2) and an ANSER head in their repertoire. This “argument” (and it really isn’t an argument it is just a non-sensical statement yelled anytime the Scotty Cameron name comes up) isn’t thrown at any of these other putter makers, even the “less mainstream” putter makers have a version of these putters and don’t hear it. That would be like cussing out the cashier at the Putt-Putt Golf course because their putters are ripoffs of the “bullseye” style putter head.

Since when has anyone ever maintained that Scotty Cameron “created” the ANSER head shape? Never…and it doesn’t change Scotty Cameron’s legacy or the fact that his putters have been used to win lots of majors and many many more PGA tour events.

I like that GolfWRX brought this Scotty Cameron post to everyone’s attention. Rickie definitely stabilized a little when he finally stuck with this new putter instead of switching between a few different putters. I didn’t know that this was a leftover Tiger putter head, and found it interesting to hear a little about the story of Rickie coming to use this putter. I love the look of the putters that Scotty made for Tiger, from the shallow face sole to top line, to the neck that is set back quite a bit from the face. They are fantastic putters that are beautifully crafted and shaped by a skilled craftsman.

Quit using logic. It makes people grumpy.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
