A White Hot Mesh: Odyssey Works Putters
Odyssey’s Works putters merge two of the company’s most successful technologies to create something new.
The putters use a new insert — called Fusion RX — that combines Odyssey’s White Hot insert with a stainless steel mesh that’s similar to the company’s Metal-X insert. The idea was to combine the soft, consistent feel of the White Hot insert with the roll benefits of the Metal-X insert pattern.
[quote_box_center]”We took a thin mesh of stainless steel about 0.4 mm thick and adhere it to the surface,” says Austie Rollinson, Principal Designer at Odyssey Golf. “And what that does — the stainless steel with the oval pattern — is give you that friction that you’re looking for to put that better roll on it. But it also is thin enough that it flexes with the impact so that you get the feel and sound and resiliency of the White Hot [insert] behind it… so it’s the best of both worlds.”[/quote_box_center]
The last step? Adding the company’s Versa paint, which uses contrasting silver and black lines to aid golfers with their alignment.
The new technologies are used on each of the 11 putters in the Odyssey Works line: #1, #1 Wide, #7, #9, V-Line, 2-Ball Fang, 2-Ball Fang Tank, Arm Lock #1 Wide, Tank #1 Wide, Tank #7 and Rossie #1 Tank. All models (except the Arm Lock #1 Wide) are also available with a SuperStroke grip for a $20 upcharge.
The putters will be in stores on Jan. 30, 2015.
Odyssey Works 2-Ball Fang ($199)
With the Odyssey Works 2-Ball Fang, the company replaced the metal flange on top of the putter with a lighter ABS polymer insert. That reduced the weight on the top by 78 percent, lowering its center of gravity and creating more discretionary weight for designers to place around the perimeter of the club.
The result? A “fanged” look that’s 32 percent more accurate than any 2-Ball the company has ever made, Rollinson said.
- Lengths: 33, 34, 35 inches
- Head Weight: 360 grams
A 2-Ball Fang “Tank” ($219) is also available. It has a head weight of 380 grams and is available in lengths of 35 and 38 inches.

Q&A: Martin Trainer on his Bobby Grace “Greg Chalmers” putter, 6.5-degree driver, and “butter knife” 2-iron
As unbiasedly as I can put it, Martin Trainer has one of the coolest club setups in professional golf. (At some point soon, I’ll put together a top-10 list of “coolest club setups on Tour,” but I know that Trainer will be in the top-10)
What a lineup. He plays a 6.5-degree Wilson prototype driver, a 13-degree Wilson prototype 3-wood, a true blade Wilson Staff Model 2-iron, and a Bobby Grace “Greg Chalmers Commemorative” putter!
View this post on Instagram
I mean, look at this 2-iron from address…
To quote the great author R.L. Stine: “Goosebumps.”
On Wednesday at the 2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open, I caught up with Trainer to learn more about his bag setup.
Here’s what he had to say:
You have the Internet going crazy over your bag setup, and your putter. Where’d you pick the Bobby Grace-Greg Chalmers putter up? How long have you had it?
MT: This was from when Bobby Grace came to my course in California: Cal Club. And for whatever reason, they just started having them in the shop. So then I took my buddy’s, started using it, and made, like, a million putts in a row, which is how every putter story begins, I guess.
And then, I bought a couple of my own, used it for years, got to the Tour with it, won on Tour with it (the 2019 Puerto Rico Open). Then, about a year later, started using another putter, did that for a couple years, but now it’s back in the bag.
When did it come back in the bag?
MT: December of this past year. So a few months ago.
What year would you say was the first time you threw that in the bag, or, like, when you bought it?
MT: God…Probably, 2016, maybe? 2018?
Do you remember how much you paid for it?
MT: I don’t know, actually. Maybe $100-150 bucks or something. I think that’s the only golf club I’ve bought between high school and now. Well, two, since I bought two of them.
The driver is interesting, too. What went into the prototyping process?
MT: That was a version of the current driver, but it was the prototype that they first came out with for Tour guys to try. And for whatever reason, I just never switched out to the new one.
It’s just 6.5 degrees, right?
MT: Yeah. Very low loft, yeah.
What kind of ball speed do you have with that these days?
MT: Like high 170’s.
Yeah, that’ll work. And then a 2-iron blade? We’re seeing fewer and fewer of those out here.
MT: Yeah. The butter knife.
Very cool thing to have in the bag. Have you done any testing with driving irons?
MT: Yeah, I used to have a thicker one, but it was a little offset, and I never hit it that well. And then finally, I started messing around with the butter knife. And I remember the first time I looked down at it, I was terrified. And then I ended up getting used to it, putting it in play, and it’s been in place since. It’s a pretty good club for me.
How far do you carry that?
MT: Like 235.
A good little wind club, I’m sure.
MTL Yeah, exactly. I can hit it very low. It’s great.
I love it. You have people shook looking at that. Thanks for the time, man.
MT: Absolutely.

So how is this putter better, yet significantly cheaper, than a Metal X Milled Versa? $349 vs $179. The people who bought those or the Metal X Milled must feel like they were ripped off!

Oh wow!!! Silver instead of white! I must have! Sarcasm. Sorry, just not enough improvement to get excited about. I am actually surprised I even read the article. I knew what it would say but read it anyway.

These look great IMO, I have always thought Odyssey putters were the best putters dollar for dollar, these could improve on their legacy for sure, combining a truer roll with that classic feel. Something the Metal X series could not quite get right.
The #1 wide having a line is tempting me highly.

So will this line still jive with their eye-line fitting system? Or is that out the door, only to be resurrected and claimed as innovation next year?

Thank goodness…back to the solid line and away from the 3 alignment dots. Hate the dots so may have to give this #7 or #7 Tank a ride.

I like that they got away from the white. they make good putters but needed to get away from the taylormade white look. i like the size of the #1 wide, reminds me of a sqaureback style. good putter for price. and to “rat’s” comment of a pig painted. they at least have a huge putter line that stays consistnet with shape each year. so people can keep the same style putter they like but get an upgrade or jsut a diff color and change of scenery. there is only so muhc tech in putter. same with betti and scotty. same styles slighly tweaked each year with new color scheme. thats all. dont hate.

Does Scotty make an arm lock?
Bettis are fantastic I own both. Just wish the feel was a pinch firmer for slow greens I play on most often.

I’m surprised they brought the arm lock putter back. Anyone have any details on this, is it going to have more loft in the face like the bettinardi?

Much the same ol’ same ol’. A pig painted red or white is still a pig.

Winningest putter of all time over PING and Cameron. Probably not a pig by most peoples definition – unless you consider pigs a good thing.

You’re 100% correct Enrigue. I said the same in another forum. Bettinardi’s, Scotty’s & Piretti’s are beautiful putters. Some of them are like art. But making putts is making money and thats why Odyssey is the number one putter on tour. I’m a white hot pro guy, but for a change, I like a milled stainless putter. I traded a Scotty Newport Mil Spec for an Odyssey # 2 ProType and couldn’t be happier.
