Moore, Woodland to playoff tonight for the CIMB Classic

As the PGA Tour marches ahead into uncharted autumn territory, Gary Woodland and Ryan Moore rest soundly in their beds in Malaysia, awaiting a 7:30 a.m. Monday start time to decide the winner of the CIMB Classic. But Kuala Lumpur clocks are conveniently set 12 hours ahead of those in the United States’ Eastern Time Zone, meaning that golf fans will be treated to a Sunday night playoff that will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.

Woodland and Moore finished the fourth round tied at 14-under par, one shot ahead of Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Chris Stroud. Stroud began the final round in a tie for the lead with Moore, but he was unable to keep pace with his playing partner. Aphibarnrat made four birdies in five holes through Sunday’s front nine, but he could not muster another through the entire homeward side.

This year marks the first time that the CIMB Classic is an official event on the PGA Tour. Coupled with next week’s World Golf Championship in Hong Kong, it makes an attractive target for golfers who wish to get a jump on the 2014 FedEx Cup chase.

Keegan Bradley surged early in the CIMB Classic, but he faltered over the final 36 holes to finish alone in 10th. Sergio Garcia also played well on Thursday, but could not recapture the magic over the final 54 holes, ending in a tie for 11th. Although the leaders struggled on Sunday to reach the 60s, plenty of low rounds were recorded. Bo Van Pelt moved up 43 spots, into the top 20, with a 65. Aaron Baddeley made up 11 spaces with a 66, vaulting into 5th place alone. Billy Horschel nearly claimed a top-10 with his Sunday 67, finishing tied with Garcia in 11th position.

Graham Delaet, the Canadian Presidents Cupper on the brink of top-tier golf, made a front-side run at the title with four birdies in 14 holes. Ultimately needing one more to reach the playoff, he immolated his chances with a bogey-double bogey run on Nos. 15 and 16. As for the final two title aspirants, Moore finished stronger. The Washington state native and graduate of UNLV birdie the 14th and 16th holes to move to the top. Woodland, twice a winner on tour, also birdied the 14th hole to stake his claim to the title.
