A triumphant return: Mickelson takes the Claret Jug to Callaway HQ

Published

on

It began with a simple text message to Callaway CEO Chip Brewer…”Can I stop by?”

Shortly after, dressed in shorts and flip flops, 2013 Open Champion Phil Mickelson strolled into Callaway Golf’s headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., with the Claret Jug.

“I know there’s a lot of you,” Mickelson said on Twitter, “but I want everyone to hold the jug.”

Mickelson’s visit to Callaway is a testament to the relationship that he has with the Callaway Golf family. He has been an endorser of the company since his switch from Titleist in 2004, and has won four of his five majors championships using Callaway’s product.

He’s highly involved in their R&D process, which is evident with two of Callaway’s latest products — the X Hot 3Deep fairway woods, which were created with him in mind, as well as the Callaway Mack Daddy 2 wedges, which are offered with a “U Grind” on the sole that Mickelson helped create.

When Mickelson wins, he is very vocal about his trust in Callaway’s equipment, and his positive feeling about the company as a whole.

In an interview after he re-upped his endorsement contract with Callaway in 2009, Mickelson said:

“I can’t imagine playing this game without Callaway management’s support behind me and Callaway’s equipment in my bag,” said Mickelson. “Both have contributed to my success and I’m planning on their support throughout the rest of my professional career.”

Like a lot of golf fans, I’ve rooted hard for Lefty throughout the years. Moments like this make me proud to be a Mickelson fan, and I’m sure hundreds of Callaway employees feel the same way right now.

First, I’m an avid supporter of Phil.. He get’s it. He’s the next Arnie…any doubters need to check it. PM versus the rest of the field when it comes to winning and promoting the game of golf with class and dignity: there is no comparison. Well done Phil, and thank you.

GolfWRX is on site this week at the Valero Texas Open.

The event has been around since 1922, making it one of the oldest on the PGA Tour calendar. Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
