At Chaseís advice, since Iím hitting it really well right now, he wants me to film my swing lots so i have something to go back to when it gets a little off.

Iím making some good progress on the changes with trips to the range and also hitting lots of wedges every night at home. Itís becoming more natural, and as a side effect, my wedge swing is improving as well. Wedge play has always been a strength of mine, but last season it was  a bit lacking.

Anyway, hereís a few swings from yesterday. Moving in the right direction.

Of course you would find a shirt to match those shoes

Swing just looks more fluid in today's videos.  I still think your next major step in the process is getting into tournament play.  Club champs are one thing, but getting into tournaments on courses that you aren't comfortable with just changes the way you approach the game.  You're a better player now than I've ever been but the idea still applies.  My biggest step forward was my one year in college where it was just constant tournaments for 3 months.  Finding ways to score when the swing isn't there under tournament conditions just makes the rest of the game so much easier.  Casual rounds are a breeze and I feel like I can compete in tournaments on courses that I'm comfortable on.  Your swing is there, time to show it off a bit.

I totally agree with all of your points. I like playing in tournaments and need to sit down and figure out some events to test my game in. Tournament pressure just exposes weaknesses in a way that casual rounds donít. Like you said, getting the ball in the hole.

Swing is feeling more and more fluid as I practice it. Driver and long clubs need a bit of work still but theyíre miles better than before.

Short game is tight, iron play is vastly improved, etc.

Plus the jitters of tournament play are fun

Worked hard on driver today. With some setup tweaks and an intent change, Iím launching it higher, and as a result, carrying it further. Donít know numbers, but it was appreciably further on the range than Iím used to.

With driver, i need more secondary tilt at address, a shorter backswing, and i need to hit less down on it (feels like Iím hitting way up, but is probably even AoA or a few up.)

So basically, set up and try to hit up on it and hook it. Results are great. Little draws.

Feel isn't real.

So, with the efficient pattern, what is preventing you from feeling like you are going after it? Another way of phrasing this question: you don't feel like you are hitting it that hard, is there another gear (maybe fourth instead of third)?

Good question. Something to be explored. Carry distance is up throughout the bag, and i think after sitting with the changes for a bit i can probably accelerate my arms harder without shifting them out so much.

Your swing looks more free at the top.  Are you starting to let your elbow "fly" more?  It used to have more of a "pinned" look.

Yes. That was something we actively worked on in Houston. A little freer elbow at the top and less laid off allows me to externally rotate my right shoulder/get the right elbow forward better in the downswing.

It definitely feels more free.

Getting closer.

I feel comfortable pretty much from wedge to 5w with the changes. Driver/3w needs some work still. With those clubs the swing tends to get a little long and I still want to yank the handle too much to create speed. Gonna keep at it!

When Iím swinging at it well, Iím a 112-115 mph driver guy. Highest Iíve been is 119. When my swing is really off, sucking hands inside too early and rerouting out on the downswing, Iím 108-110, and considerably shorter with driver.

Yeah, not surprised by those numbers.  You seem to move the club pretty easy.  Swings that carry speed but look easy are where its at!

Hi everybody... Rather than starting another new Monte instruction thread, I figured I'd just join the the discussion in here.  I'm sure that many of us have probably received some of the same feedback, tips, feels, etc from Monte.  Also, if I send e-mails like this to Monte, he might fly back to Denver and give me a 120mph driver into the arse. :-)

I attended the Denver clinic last weekend.  This was my second time getting in person instruction from Monte; last year's Denver clinic being the first.

The first go-round the only real change that Monte left me with was to improve my posture and setup.  My setup was an absolute disaster. I had gotten into a position where I was standing WAY too far away from the ball (think hybrid setup, only with an 8 iron), and with my weight way out on my toes and falling back on my right side (like 90/10% toe/heel, and 80/20% right/left according to the pressure mat).  I really focused on this when at the range and using a mirror in my basement all of last season.  This year, when getting on the pressure mat, I was right where I should be (50/50 heel/toe, roughly 50/50 left/right, and at the top of my backswing pressure on my right heel).  Huge improvement.

This year, Monte started pointing out issues I need to address in my swing.  The first being that at the top of the backswing my left wrist is cupped and stays in extension through the downswing.  I had self diagnosed this as a problem, but wasn't really sure the right way to go about dealing with it.   The second item he mentioned was that my left arm really needs to move off my body faster.  This was something that I wasn't expecting, and really to be honest had no idea what it was supposed to feel like.

Video 1:  This was taken earlier this month before the clinic.  Around the 3 second mark, I'm at the top of the backswing.  You can really see how much my lead wrist is cupped.

Video 2:  This was taken today at the beginning of my range session.  I really wasn't thinking about any swing thought at all.  My lead wrist looks a little better at the top, but I still am not getting any flexion in it during the transition.  I'm seeing the most subtle reroute in transition, but I'm definitely not getting the shaft to shallow like would happen if I get my wrist in the right position like Monte wants.

Video 3:  This was at the end of my range session.  I was really working on getting the left arm separating.
http://youtu.be/YhhiegYfR_0

So that's a lot of words and me babbling... My questions for the group:

1.) At the clinic, I was a total numbskull when Monte was  trying to get me a feel that would work to get my lead wrist flat/bowed/flexion in transition.  I understand exactly what he's trying to get me to do when we talk, but I just can't seem to get my body to do it while swinging.  Every night this week, I've been trying to engrain the move at an absolute snails pace in front of a mirror in the basement.  Mirror work helped me grasp my setup changes last year.  Has anyone else had a similar problem with your wrist in transition?  What was the magic feel that helped you get in the right position?  Is mirror work a good approach, since I'm struggling with it so badly while swinging?

2.) Again at the clinic, I was also a bit thickheaded grasping the feels/drills Monte was trying to give me working on my left arm too.  The one that finally clicked was he had me line up my body to a target 50+ yards to the right, and then swing like I was still trying to hit to the target to the left.  I started flushing the ball... great ball first contact, high and long.  As a drill/feel it's great.  I used it on the range today. The problem is I definitely can't play golf like that, I had no real control over direction.  I'm trying to find a feel that I can use on the course if things get off track.  In the third video I posted above, I was doing some left arm swings trying to accelerate it around my body, and feel like my body pivot is following the arm.  It really seemed to work on the range.  Is there any downside to this drill/practice swing that's going to derail me that I'm not thinking about?  The big thing I have to fight myself is getting the left arm swinging around rather than the left arm pulling down.  I'm a handle puller.

Thanks for any input!  My apologies for the novel... I can get pretty wordy at times.  If I'm derailing the thread, just tell me to go away.  LOL.

With all due respect, I'd start a new thread as this one is a multi-year journey for the OP and not a general catch-all Monte thread. Besides that, you'll probably get more feedback with a new thread.

Hey, itís Chrisís thread. Start your own journey. Plenty of Monte fans happy to chime in on your own journey. Chrisís is compelling, fun and rife with travel food porn.

Sorry if my reply came across as harsh.  Seriously, please post a video in a new thread, so those of us in "Monte's Masses" can chime in and hopefully help out!

BTW, I can identify about not being able to get Monte's concepts through, even after a three-day clinic.  Serious swing changes take time!  Look at this thread and how long it's taken Chris's swing to evolve!

When I started this thread, I never could have imagined it would be this expansive, that I'd meet so many great people interested in this crazy game, or that it would take me the places that it has. Thank you to everyone who has followed along and supported me during this journey of mine. Stay tuned, I've got some great stuff planned for this season! :golfer:

In the spirit of 500,000 views, I feel like I've reached a turning point with my game. I've worked very hard since the Houston clinic on making the swing changes stick and the change of intent to trying to hook the ball on every shot has really started to pay off. My swing is in a very good place, and it's finally time to just play golf.

I'm hitting it as well as I ever have throughout the bag. Now it's a matter of, as Hal said, "really getting to know the game of golf intimately." I've got to focus on strategy and course management, and eliminate excess thoughts over the ball. I need to commit to the shot at hand and trust that the work I'm putting in during practice sessions will carry over.

Played 9 holes tonight after work and was just striping it. Here's the swing I'll be working with for the foreseeable future. I'll video my swing every once in a while going forward, but really only to check that I'm still on track. I need to avoid nitpicking positions and avoid obsessing over video. In short, it's time to get out of my own way and learn to get the ball in the hole!
