I just had a Swing Labs fitting with an eye towards replacing much of my bag -

9 year old Ping G2 iron set (steel shafts)
TM Burner 2.0 driver
Cobra SZ woods - 3W, 5W 7W - 1H

Across all manufacturers we found more accuracy with the Ping G25 irons.  Cobra BioCell irons did go farther, but not nearly as accurate.

Anyway, I really liked the G25s - but they didn't have i25 to try.  :stink:

I've ordered custom fit G25s irons (green dot +1")
And a G25 driver ($270 used on Ebay)
I'll worry about the woods later - I still hit them great....

So - I'm just wondering if I made a mistake in getting the "old" G25s rather than waiting for the new i25s?

UPDATE - Irons and Driver are in (photo attached) and I'm liking them very much

Just a guess here, but you might have had remorse no matter which way you went...

Go out and enjoy your new clubs when they arrive!

No mistake in my opinion. The G 25 are still the newest G series for another year.

Go out, play your new clubs, have fun.  At some point, we all take something of a leap of faith with any clubs, no matter how much we've tested them, been fitted, etc.  Some will end up working, some won't.  There are plenty of older and newer clubs out there if that comes to pass.

But I suppose as my current bag shows, if there is one line that I'd be happy to go all-in on from driver through irons, it would probably be the G25.  So I think you'll be plenty happy.  Good luck.

G25's imo are the best irons Ping has put out in a long time.  They are super forgiving for those days we aren't real sharp, but the soles are useable the days we are.  I think you made the right choice.

If YOU think you made a mistake that seed has already been planted and it's going to stay there and germinate in your mind.  You have to hit them side by side to see if you made a mistake or not.  There really isn't any other way to figure it out.

Thanks all for the replies - I'm sure I'll be happy with the G25s and it will be a big improvement over my current kit!   Guess I will have to wait and hit the i25s and see if there's a significant difference for me.
I like the higher lofts in the i25s, but not so sure about less forgiveness.  ;-)

That's kind of how I felt when I tried them - my old G2s were the same "best" comparative feel/performance in their day.

I think you're going to like those clubs. Got fitted for a set of irons last fall and bought the G25's. Never had hit Pings before and only had a chance to use mine for about 6 rounds. So far I'm really really liking them. Enjoy them!!

Since you already were playing some G series irons I'd say you made a fantastic choice.  For the amount of forgiveness they offer they actually look pretty good.  So much so relative to the previous G series irons, in my opinion, that I finally bought some to see if the G series was for me.  It wasn't, and I'm back to the I series, but I'm going to miss the forgiveness.  I simply feel more confident over the i20s and as a result am a better ball striker with them relative to the G25s.  Sadly it's all mental for me haha.

I just got fitted for G25's (got fitted for the G25 driver a few months ago).

I had the chance to hit the I25's vs the G25's and I didn't see a massive difference between the two. I was hitting the G25's better.

Even though the i25's had higher lofts (slightly) I was launching the G25's way better.

G25s are wonderful clubs, and the driver is as long and as forgiving as you can get.  Maybe---maybe-- the i25s would be marginally different for your game in a better sense, but i doubt that the G25s will hold you back materially.  Driving wise it sure doesn't hold back Bubba.

Back to report today I just shot my best round today on my current club course (a 69 with 4 birdies, 1 bogey) with the new G25 irons and driver.   :golfer:

The driver is so solid and confident feeling you can just really let it go!  The irons too - the reason I upgraded my old Ping irons and switched from TM to the G25 driver was the tight shot patterns I got at SwingLabs - and it now seems proven true!

No mistake.

My general opinion about golf equipment aligns with my feeling about televisions.  No one ever regrets getting a TV with a screen that's "too big", and few people regret getting clubs that are too forgiving.  I personally play a G25 driver, and I haven't looked at anything else since I got it, after about a half dozen in the year or two prior.

Great choice on the PINGs.  Last year I was fitted on grass.  I went with an open mind and was going to accept whatever I hit best.  I tried the G25, i20, and the Anser.  For me, I hit the i20 better.  The G25 launched too high.  I know it's caused by a swing flaw, but I hit my irons HIGH.  The i20's kept the ball flight down a bit for me.  Now, even though my irons are "obsolete", I know that I've got a set that works for me, and see no reason to change for a long time to come.

Enjoy your new clubs!

Last year bought G25 irons.  First new set at 36 years old.  Nice but sold them for used I20 this year.  I like the look better and feel I have to pay attention to swing a bit more and that helps me hit better shots.  When I hit a bad shot with G25 I felt horrible because people say these are so easy to hit, just killed my confidence. I like the thinner soles out if the rough as well.

The only hybrid I carry is a #1 Cobra (16º) and it swaps in and out of my bag with a 5 metal/wood depending on the course I'm going to.  I find irons to be far more precise than hybrids, and only slightly more difficult to hit.

My only issue are chunky top lines - but they are smooth!

G25's imo are the best irons Ping has put out in a long time.  They are super forgiving for those days we aren't real sharp, but the soles are useable the days we are.  I think you made the right choice.

That's kind of how I felt when I tried them - my old G2s were the same "best" comparative feel/performance in their day.
I know it's the obvious but G25s & i25s are comparing apples and oranges. Both fruits and irons but totally different. I have owned 30 sets of irons including g10s,g20s,s56s,i15s,and the backup WRX i5s 3-pw, s300s I don't play but keep for being "in between sets". To me of the many differences between the two I feel the amount of offset is a big difference which effects a lot.
Bottom line is we always look beyond what we have for something else ,at least I do, but you must of liked the sticks enough to get a custom set and picking the more forgiving of the two for most of us is the best decision. You have a good set of irons so just go out and enjoy playing them.
