This looks interesting.
I was going to dump my SG5 for a Approach G6, but now I may have to wait.  Anyone have thoughts? Info?

'Looks interesting. What do you think they mean by "Bluetooth-Ready makes preloads obsolete"? I assume this means it'll pair with the smartphone app, allowing one to download courses as needed without having to sync with a PC. If so, it's about dang time. However, given SkyGolf's inane ability to create buggy software, I gotta imagine it'll take a year or more before the smartphone app is usable. Heck, I place a bet that the Touch won't pair with 60% of the available smartphones.

I've had 4 models of SkyCaddies, with the latest being an SGXw. I couldn't get the WiFi working with my home network, and their customer support was basically useless. On a hunch, I changed my SSID to one using only letters and numbers, as my original SSID had special printable characters. Sure enough, it workled. 'Some frikin Einstein at SkyGolf decides that SSIDs with non-alphanumeric characters aren't valid, even though every other piece of wireless gear on the planet works just fine with them (Note: only ?, ", $, [, \, ], and + are not allowed). On top of that, there was no message indicating the "problem". Sheesh.

I don't have a problem with the fees. I guess if I played only a handful of courses a year, it might bug me. However, I play dozens of new courses around the country each year, and having good data on my GPS is worth $40.

I also have no problem with the subscription cost. Having owned two other GPS's, the quality of the information supplied significantly increased with the cost of getting the data. You got exactly what you paid for with the free data.

I'm also fine with the fees.  Pretty cheap for so much tech in my opinion.  Plus, I just reupped my membership on the special they were running.  Upgraded from birdie to double eagle for $99 and three years of service.  One of those offers you can't refuse!

Plus, it's transferrable so if I decide to switch to the Touch (likely) my membership is still good for three more years.

Wait till you need a $90 battery for your sgx, there's another excuse.

Wonder what the battery options for this new one will be, hopefully they will be user serviceable, but if Skycaddie can't make 1000% or more on them I would doubt it.

The days of user replaceable batteries is pretty much over. Replaceable batteries add size and weight to devices are unacceptable to most users. Also there have been a lot of problems with people replacing batteries with cheap Chinese made batteries that end up causing fires.

It looks like this is a real product and it will probably be announced tomorrow at the opening of the PGA Merchandise Show. The TGW web site has it for sale at $299 and available 3/21. The biggest changes appear to be touch screen, multiplayer scoring, and course download through bluetooth.

SkyGolf SkyCaddie Touch GPS features:
  • Glove friendly touch screen design
  • 3" Hi-Resolution, sunlight-readable screen
  • IntelliGreen, displays the exact shape of the green from your angle of approach to turn every shot into a scoring opportunity
  • Get front carry, back distances, depth of green
  • Interactive HoleVue w/New Dynamic Range Rings and expanded zoom
  • With an eagle’s view of the entire hole, get the distances you need to avoid hazards and play smart golf from tee to green
  • Measure to any point on the hole whether you can see what’s ahead or not
  • Preloaded with 34,000 maps, ready-to-play
  • New Bluetooth-ready makes preloads obsolete
  • Multi-player scoring
  • Complimentary Smartphone App

Odd that tgw has information on this item and when I live chatted with a skycaddie rep they acted like I was asking questions about the Manhattan Project and would only tell me that this week at the PGA show it would be seen and still expected to ship in April.

Oh forgot to say that the rep for skycaddie also couldn't tell me if they were going to have an "upgrade/trade in" option for the Touch either. They have usually had this option where you send them your older skycaddie for a discounted price on the new one. Guess it's a waiting game

From past product releases, Skygolf appears to have a policy to not comment on unannounced products, which I can understand. If you do a Google search, other sites are publishing their press release that gives more info about the Touch and other new products. The new feature I am most interested in hearing more about is onDEMAND HD. The press release indicates you will get graphics that are inspired by tour yardage books. I will want to see what that includes and if the courses I play will have that available.

My biggest concern is that SkyGolf is notorious for buggy software. I wouldn't be surprised if the Touch doesn't work with many phones right out of the box, requiring several patches before it works. I've been through this too many times with previous models.

My biggest concern is that SkyGolf is notorious for buggy software. I wouldn't be surprised if the Touch doesn't work with many phones right out of the box, requiring several patches before it works. I've been through this too many times with previous models.

Mine as well. And its not initially clear to me what the main differences are between this and say the Garmin G6?

Hardware wise, probably not much. However, I've been using SkyCaddies for years because of the accuracy of the ground-mapped data.

I've used at least one model of just about every brand of GPS device thats come out in the last ten years and I've never seen a big issue with accuracy. I've used Skycaddies since the SG1 came out and do like a lot of things about their products. But in the comparisons I've done I've never seen these wild issues with accuracy differences that people talk about.

Having owned Garmin, Callaway, and Skycaddie, the difference is not in the accuracy, the difference in the quality of the yardages. Living in North Georgia, all of the courses I play are hilly. I have found the information I get from Skycaddie is better than the information from the others. When they walk the course they will usually have a person with them that will help them map not just hazards and landmarks but target spots. That target spot will usually be a flat lie instead of a uphill, downhill, or sidehill lie you get if you are off of that target spot by 20 yards. You just cannot get that quality of info from mapping using a satellite picture. Also the course I belong to has the Pinpoint feature, which I have found helps hitting shots to the green. It will be interesting to see what additional information they will supply with the onDEMAND HD on the Touch.

I would be EXTREMELY surprise if it will be available for anything other than an iPhone.

At first i am thinking Iphone and Andriod OS then slowly it will include other things and more Andriods.

I could be wrong also, we will find out soon enough. If only an Iphone they will limit the audience but i am also sure you can sync it up via computer also.
