After a lot of swing changes and generally getting better i need to make lower scores and not just have pretty irons that look good in the car park.

I'm currently using 2008 nike forged blades 3-PW with PXi 6.0

My 2 iron is a nike 2008 combo head with an X100

I've always used blades. My first set of clubs were snake eyes blades 3-PW

I'm fairly happy i'll be going with X100's no matter which head i get. I may drop the 2 iron as i now hit my 3 iron further than i used to hit the 2 iron. I may still keep it as it's handy for my home course which is an old links course.

They'll be completely custom built buy a independent club builder so anything is an option.

I'm looking at some of the JDM stuff and mizuno however i'm open to anything.

I'd like to keep my lofts from a 48º PW with 4º gaps up.

Where do i start? I've grabbed a MP64 head from the fitting room but haven't got round to hitting it yet.

I'm a bit clueless in the shovel area ;)

Thanks

First suggestion is to put the 2 iron in the basement.  Its fun to look at but not practical with the options you now have with driving irons and hybrids.

You cant go wrong with Mizuno going from a blade to a more forgiving club.  Adams CMB sure are a nice set of forged "player" irons that still have a nice simple profile.  However, they are a bit bigger than what your used to coming from a true blade.  You may even consider a mixed set.  If you can work out a good combo of PW-7 of Mizuno/Titleist blades and then 6-3 or 4 of a cavity that might be the best move.

Im a big fan of the CMBs but will admit that at times would like a slightly smaller P-8 head to hit some more precise shorter distance shots.

I take on board the 2 iron comment. I hate hybrids. Always hook them and am not a fan of the feel. I may just drop 2 iron all together and go driver, 3 wood and the 3 iron.

I hit the MP64 tonight. Great feel and sound. Thicker top line but most things will be. I can't say it felt anymore forgiving? I just hit it the same as my blade. The big question i guess is the 3 iron and the 4 iron. Lovely head though. I have mizuno wedges and love those too.

Any opinions on Vega or anything like that? The scratch MC head looks nice.

Thanks :D

MP64 is very demanding, and your observation that it wasn't noticeably more forgiving than a blade is a common one.  There really are so many options for a nice player's cb that I am not sure just listing them would help much.  A few questions might help us to figure out what would be best though:  Must the clubs be forged?  If so, this narrows down the choices considerably.  Also, are you looking more for feel or forgiveness?  Is price a restriction at all?

Why not try the Titleist AP2 or S55?  They might be just what you are looking for.

Yes must be forged
Feel over forgiveness
price is not a problem for the right set
3-pw heads must have the same offset, as little as possible
The shorter the head the better
I like square toes although this in't very common

Thanks. There are so many to pick from it's hard to know where to start. I tried the Vr pro combos and didn't like them

If you desperately need forged, than ap2's should be a cinch. But if you ever try a ping s series irons, then you'll be surprised how solid they feel compared to forged. They should be just as soft as your Nike's. Try them, you may be surprised by them.

Yeah the S55's look really good. I'll give 'em a go. Tried AP2's before and they were fairly average. Felt like any OTR iron imo.

If you want forged and feel, I think you have to first look to mizuno.  If you don't think the MP64 is forgiving enough, then look to the MP59 and MP54.  To be honest though, I might give the MP64 another shot if I were you.  It is easily the best feeling non-blade out of all of these.  After them, the Bridgestone J40 cbs/dpcs are an excellent choice for feel.  Also, give the Cally x forged and Adams CMB a try, both are worthy forged player's clubs.

I hit the S55's yesterday, put one together with an S300 shaft at the fitting cart.  I didn't expect to hit it well as I currently game G15s, but wanted to just see what it was like.  I swung it about 20 times, and honestly it felt no harder to hit than many other irons I have tried.  I could tell when I hit it off the toe for sure, but it only penalized me by 10-15 yards or so and still on line.  All of the balls struck well were about 10 yards further than my G15s and felt great!

Definitely a confidence booster for someone like me that has only used SGI irons, but I'm sure bad days where my swing is a little off would be frustrating. Definitely has me looking into the I20 line and upcoming I25s more though.

I hit both the S55 and the AP2 714 today, and both are really solid sticks.  It is really hard to tell that much of a feel difference between them.  They also seemed to be of a similar forgiveness as well.  The toplines of both clubs were quite nice as well, and the lines of both clubs were really similar.  I would warrant a guess if they both had the same finish you would have a hard time distinguishing between them.

Hit the titleist CB. It was fairly meh. MP64 is good. I'll give it a fair go. Any thoughts on the Wishon 560mc? They look like they could half fit the bill. I can get them at trade too :D

Since you mentioned you like JDM stuff and price is not an option I'm surprised nobody has thrown out the Miura CB-501... I just dropped my Nike VRPro Blades for CB501s and couldn't be happier.  Great feeling club with minimal offset and just enough easier to hit than the blade without feeling like the club is correcting my bad swings.  Looking down at address still looks like I'm playing blades so that has helped the transition.  I've only played 3 rounds since the switch but I don't see myself changing back to the blades anytime soon.  I managed to pick up the KJ Choi Special Editions at a ridiculous deal so I'm only playing 4-pw but that 4-iron is the easiest to hit 4-iron I've probably ever played so I'm guessing the 3-iron would be similarly easy to hit.

Yea the first thing that came to my mind was the CB-501, second was the R9 b stamps although those may be tough to find but they have no offset and a more square toe

I've got MP-64's, Yamaha Tours, have had Miura 501's some other Miuras and ton of other CB's and blades and this is what I think right now is better than all of them, especially if you're willing to go JDM:

Well you could say it's the other way around. Tourstage/Bridgestone has been using the triangle-shaped back for years, way before the MP-64. And the finish and grind is better than Miz, I've got both. Not to mention a better feel, not so mushy. And you won't have to add lead weights, either.

I went from Callaway X-Protos to Bridgestone J40 DPCs and am loving every minute of it. The DPCs are long from heel to toe, but have a thin topline and minimal offset. They actually remind me a lot of my old Maxfli Revolution Blacks. I will say that the DPCs don't feel quite as good as the X-Protos, but they are some pretty darn straight hitting irons. I also liked the MP 53/54s in terms of performance but liked the look and face progression of the DPCs better.

Hit the titleist CB. It was fairly meh. MP64 is good. I'll give it a fair go. Any thoughts on the Wishon 560mc? They look like they could half fit the bill. I can get them at trade too :D

Since you're open to Wishon, why not the 575MMC? They could be just what you're looking for. A GREAT looking players CB with consistent offset (2mm) throughout the set. You can have a full blade, full cavity or mixed set. Not had a chance to hit them myself, but they look as good as anything out there at the moment.

Yeah i've actually hit those Wishons a long time ago. They're were good however they just look too busy for me. I'm yet to try the Bridgestones. If the offer them in black the same as their wedges they could be interesting.

So far i've tried (all 'standard' length X100)

Out

AP1
I've seen smaller shovels in gardening stores

AP2
Ok, nothing special and no where as good feeling as any of the Mizunos

MP64
Loved them! Just might as well stick with my blades

JPX 825 pro
No 3 iron and lofts are far too strong

Nike VRS forged

Massive at address and felt fairly horrible

Cobra amp forged

Again, ok but nothing special

In the running

MP54
I really like these. Not a fan of the pocket on the back but a good solid iron. Lofts could also be bent to my specs.
Great feel. Good look at address

Wishon 560MC
Good feel, simple design and i can get them at trade which is a big plus as they'd be half the price of the Mizuno for a complete custom set. I could then use them as a full demo set to work out how much cavity i want and go on from there. Face is a bit large.

Yet to try

Bridgestone J40
Miura 501cb
Callaway legacy forged
Ping S55
MP63?

There are so many to choose from!! I'll try and get a few tested over the weekend and get on flightscope with my coach early next week to look at some numbers.

Thanks for the help.

Just a note on the stronger lofted ones - try them first and don't rule them out on specs alone. The J40 DPC lofts are stronger than my X-Proto lofts, but I feel like I hit them higher and not much farther, even with the same shafts. Had I weakened them to match, I'd have lost distance and gained spin (I think). I'm hoping to be able to compare them on a LM one day to see what the data show.

Adams 9015D 9.5*, TEE CB5 15*
Adams LSP 18*, Mizuno Fli Hi 21*
Bridgestone J40 DPC 4-9
Vokey 248.06, 254.10, Callaway Jaws 60
