Showing my age here...

J's Professional Weapon from the early 90s.

A lot of springy mass right behind the face.  Probably 200ccs? Very small.

Named after Jumbo Ozaki and he used it at the Masters one year and was out driving Nicklaus by 50-80 yards.

When the Titleist 983k came out, I was immediately hitting it longer than anything I've hit before or since.

I also had a TM 200 Tour "Duffy" 13* 3-wood with an x100 that I hit further than most drivers.

I am willing to bet that a lot of people's nominations probably coincide with their own physical prime.

I think it is equally as telling that most of the answers include many of the first round, low spin heads that came out once the average driver reached 460 cc or so.

I agree, but I like reading about the 15, 20, 30 year old drivers that some guys were hitting them then just as long as their current sticks. Though I have nothing of any substance to add to this conversation, I am having a blast reading some of the answers, reminiscing about the ones I remember and looking up the ones I don't. Fun topic, I hope some of the "old timers" (no offense, guys, I enjoy looking up and learning a little history) continue to nominate some of their old school favorites.

My OG Rapture is still about 5-15 yards longer than my Ping I20 and Ping Anser (I dumped the Anser after a few months).

I haven't found anything to kick my Cobra S3 out of the bag... when I was playing golf in Idaho, my TM 540 (I think?) was a bomber for me... Nothing like altitude to increase distance!

The one that's in my hands. :pimp:

Seriously, though, heads and technology have really closed the gap to a negligible extent these days to the point where it's all about what fits you best with the right shaft.  I've swung non-conforming driver heads that I couldn't hit for crap and I've hit epic bombs with the TEE XLD I picked up off CL for $20.  My old 9064LS probably had the longest drives of my life when I squared it up, but the off-center consistency, or lack thereof, makes "long" meaningless.

From my experience the 9015d's reputation as one of the longest heads is well deserved. Unfortunately it tends to go right on me.

Also, a rather obscure, but super-hot head was the Macgregor NVG2 "tour" model. It shared the "cup-face" technology as the exotics, but was designed to be a low spin head. I killed one for a while but that was probably 5-6 years and 30 drivers ago.

I was 33 years young in1981; I had a custom made persimmon 10* driver with 43" true temper steel shaft; I hit my longest drives ever that year with that driver. I still play the same course 32 years later and I am a good 30 to 50 yards behind those spots on the course using today's drivers. In fact, on hole #7 there was a bell at the bottom of the hill about 60 yards from the green so the people on the tee could hit safely (blind shot, 330 yard hole),  about 10 years ago they took the bell out as the majority of golfers today do not reach that spot and nobody used the bell. There are exceptions of course; I golf with several young 20 something's, and a PGA teaching pro who carry the ball on their drive  to where that bell was; the point is, no one is getting longer despite the technology amongst amateur golfers.

My nomination of recent drivers in no particular order: 983k, original Rapture, Cobra S3.

Had a chance to hit a Wishon 919thi the other day both on the range and then for 18.

The thing was an absolute BEAST! Longer than my Titleist and tour issue Taylormade offerings of recent year.

Funny how different people have different opinions. I thoguht the square heads were very straight but I could never get good distance.

There were some heads that had COR at .86 and even above (higher than the .83 USGA & R&A limit of .83). Callaway ERC II comes to mind.  In Japan they sell such clubs today, as do some other companies like Wishon (who clearly announces that the club does not meet USGA & R&A limits).  No doubt these high COR heads would put the smack down on modern clubs built to a lower COR level.  The sweet spot is small, but when you nut it...

I had an ERC II and it was the most overrated driver ever...my 975J killed it in both distance and accuracy.

That being said, I swapped out my '07 Burner for a RBZ Tour last year.  Both are super long, but the RBZ just edged it out (IMO of course).
