Tiger got to the Tour by banging balls into a net as soon as he could walk. Phil made his way through the collegiate ranks. Boo earned his stripes through the mini-tours. We're still waiting to see how Michelle gets there.
Justin Timberlake plans to take his own path to the PGA Tour. Pop super-stardom provides the time and money. Dance classes provide balance and flexibility. A solid work ethic earns him a 6 handicap and ambitions to play in PGA events by the age of 30.
According to AZcentral.com, Timberlake's "aim is to make it into a pro event - just for a tournament or two. He practices every day, has a coach and takes his clubs wherever he goes."
He's always on the road touring and is known to sneak out to the golf course when he has spare time. I caught him rolling into Olympic Club in a decked out H2 Hummer about 4 years ago, when he was in Oakland for a show. The kid's a decent swinger. The guy must follow me around 'cause we recently caught each other in Palm Springs. Lot's of golf over there too. He's been recently spotted on Carnoustie Golf Links and Muirfield.
He takes his touring mantra from Alice Cooper. "Either drink all day or play golf."
Hey if Justin Timberlake want to attempt to become a PGA player good luck and support him. I would just say its a positive for golf overall. Look high profile, mega fan pull, clean rep, and time to kill with his greenbacks whats so bad about his dream becoming reality. It would only help golf industry and revenue if he comes even close and we all benefit from it behind the ropes ya know what I mean more eye candy PGA wifes will hate him.
The difference between PGA/Nationwide tour player and a 6 handicap is enormous, regardless of time and money available. It would be cool to see Justin T. get good enough to play on tour, it would attract more sponsorship, more fans and would be a positive thing in general. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. If he got down to at least a legit scratch then maybe start talking about it.
I wish JT nothing but the best with this adventure. He has the money but does he have the talent??? And one other question I have....why do people that play golf automatically think they can make it on tour after they get a little better??? I don't think people realize how good you need to be to play on tour, any of the professional tours for that matter.
Just because you are wealthy does not mean that you can make it on tour. He has alot of time that he dedicates to other stuff aside from golf, and unless he devotes his life to playing, practicing and playing in any and every tournament he can he will be behind all of the mini tour and college guys that are out there. Everyone of the guys that makes it on tour is special in some way. They are the best at what they do bar none. Even the guy that is 150 on the nationwide tour is legit. One of the best players in the world.
I played in the 2001 Genuity Championship after monday qualifying and I can assure you that even the guys that monday are accomplished players. I played with Jeff Hart in the tourny, and that guy hit some of the worst shots I have ever seen and yet still shot 1 under par. One of the most impressive rounds that I have ever seen. He has been playing tournament golf for the better part of 20 plus years and he is a journeyman. I am not sure how long JT has been playing but I would guess he has a long way to go.
I don't know how good JT can be, but there is a saying on tour when it comes to scratch golfers....and that is scratch ain't
S#&*!!!! He might be able to get some sponsor exemptions, but outside of that I would not give him much of a chance. It takes a long time and alot of dedication. Plus a ton of tournament golf, and until he can shoot 65 or 66 to monday into an event, I don't see it happening.
That would be like me saying that I took some dance lessons and some singing lessons, so I feel pretty good about my dancing and singing and overall boy bandness. Now I want to be a member of n sync. I am sure he would tell you the same thing...good luck!!!!
Amen Dan.......not to be too harsh on ole JT but there is no frickin' way we will ever see Mr. Fancy Pants on any professional golf tour. Most people don't realize how good, real good really is.
He's a six? Well....I wish him the best, I really do, but I'll say this.
When I graduated HS, I thought I was hot s***. I was a plus handicap and thought I had it made...I was going on TOUR! So...I got some cash saved up from work and decided to play the NF Winter Tour and a few qualifiers here and there. I can tell you, as a plus handicap at the time, I wasn't near where I needed to be to make a cut let alone compete. Do I think he can get IN to a PGA TOUR event? Heavens yes...he could get IN now. I don't think there's a lot of sponsors out there that would turn him down. Do I think he'd have a chance at breaking 80 in a TOUR event? Not likely. Good luck though...hope to see him out there in the next few years.

Just my 2 cents
Dan
Actually, it would be much easier for your to get into a boy band than JT in a PGA event. LOL.
JT is proof anyone can get in a boy band. Jeez....these days even any girl could get in a boy band.
There are dreams and then there are outlandish fantasies. Whatever JT wants to call it, he's still never getting in a PGA event other than as a celebrity amateur.
I agree with you 100 hundy percent....I was just atemtping to be PC......Unless he gets a sponsors exemption I don't see JT qualifying for a PGA tour event.
He does not realize how hard it actually is. I mean now it is easy...he is an am and he shells out his 5 g's and he is in the event. He does not have to shoot 65 to get it. That is the problem that all these celebs and pretenders face.....you really need to be able to play to get out onto the tour. The Q school is actually the easiest tournament of the season if you think about it....none of the top 125 are in it. So you think that the guy that wins Q school should dominate...but guess what he does not have to face Tiger, Ernie, Phil, Retief or Vijay......that is all that I am saying.
I mondayed for Doral....and it was the best experience ever....But to be honest. I knew that I was in over my head....the minute that you see Duval on the range and you are impressed with his ball striking, you are in trouble. JT and that statement are way out of wack.....he needs alot of years, alot of tournies, and alot of lessons to even come close.
I have too much respect for people that make a living out of playing golf and chasing the dream to allow someone that has cash to make a statement that "I would like to play in an event or two to see how I do" to go buy without comment. That is a slap in the face of anyone that has ever tried to chase the dream of playing on the PGA tour....once you qualify for an event, then you can talk.......otherwise go make some sweet tunes and grind a groupie, dont disrespect all the people that have dedicated their life to trying to make it on tour......
I have seen many mini tour guys try and fail....JT is way behind the eightball...
I am friends with Briny Baird, Brett Wetterich, and Kevin Johnson....these guys for the past 8 years have dedicated themselves to trying to make it on tour, playing mini tour golf and that is it....They are all about making it on tour and that is it, nothing else matters...not even boy bandness!!!!
JT is a 6 at best.......for him to make it he will have to get to a plus 3 at worst...in my opinion. That is a nine stroke differential per round. Until he quits the boyband stuff and goes to the range like Ben Hogan I don't see it....Kenny G is suposedly the best amatuer celebrity golfer and he is a plus one at best.....to be honest. I would take anyone one from 100-150 on the Grey goose tour versus him.....I have seen these guys play and they are legit.......and would tear Kenny G a new one!!!!
True... I have learned tourney golf is alot different than your supposed handy.. and PGA tour scores are well... a league far beyond your everyday dreams.
Was not trying to be disrespectful at all....I have been there and have seen how good those guys are....JT making a stupid statement that he wants to be out there at age thirty is disrespectful to anyone that has dedicated their life to tournament golf and as a personal opinion he has no chance to make it on tour....His best best is a sponsors exemption...No disrespect to JT....it is just that hard....If it were easy I could call him tomorrow and get a record deal with lou pearlman and sell 10 million copies...
I hear ya..he is a a cool guy that I wish nothing but the best for.......Being a golfer and a former chaser of PGA tour dreams and lore....I know how hard it is.......he needs alot of time and alot of other things...Like I said before I wish him nothing but the best.....but he is facing an uphill battle(minimal chance).....I think I will be in NEW KIDS II and selling millions of records before he gets into a PGA tour event on his own accord...
Ok DRGJR72 I think we know how you feel about JT disrespecting you on your failure to make it to the PGA level and thou you feel he is mocking your attempt because of JT background your really coming off as a glass half empty guy. Try to stay a little more positive things might change for you overall in life and game.
Don't know ya man...so I am not going to say anything about you. Do the same for me if you don't mind.
My point was the JT seems to be a really good guy who said that he would like to "play in an event or two", like it is an easy thing to do. That is what I thought was disrespectful to anyone who has played or tried to play professional golf...it has nothing to do with me personally. Whether I made it or did not make it has nothing to do with that.
I was just putting in my two cents, as I have walked inside of the ropes and know how hard it is to not only get there, but to compete as well. It just seems that people seem to think it is an easy thing to do and that is what my posts were in reference to.
And since you don't know me, you cannot really give me advice on how certain changes will improve my game or my life. Good looking out though.
Jeez... Let's give the guy a little bit of a break.

Sorry to say, I don't play near well enough, and probably most of use here don't, but we all have ambitions and I'm sure most of us have dreamt of playing on Tour - regardless of whether we will ever have the chance to even be lucky enough to get to play in a Monday qualifier.
How many of us wonder that if we worked hard for a few years, maybe we would have a shot. The reality is probably not a chance in hell, but we all can have ambitions and dreams to do so.
I don't think JT was trying to be disrespectful or make light of how difficult it is to get there. But he does have the one thing that all tour players do - belief that he can.
Everyone who plays on the PGA, LPGA, EPGA, JPGA, etc right now had these aspirations as they were growing up!! What JT is trying to accomplish is nothing new and should not be a problem for anyone to accept.
We all know that No single person will make Golf more desirable or as worldly than Tiger but, there is another fan base that can be introduced to Golf whether JT makes it or not, his attempt can only make our sport much more popular and ageless. I see nothing wrong with this and it is far from an insult for him to make this statement about his ambitions to play 1 or 2 events!
I hope he gets close to a card but we all know the road leading to this from a 6 Hcp will be a test of his patience and longevity, his music career is one thing but becoming a member of that elusive 1% held by PGA tour players is ANOTHER!
Best of Luck JT, you will need it by the truck full!
There are probably about 10 to 20 thousand 6 handicap golfers in the US that have probably about the same chance as Justin to make the PGA Tour, lets put it that way. He's got tons of money, but most likely will never make his way to a legit scratch imo. Its just the odds.
I've been fortunate enough to play a couple of rounds with JT and his personal bodyguard (who'se a friend of mine and loves golf as well). A couple of things that JT has going for him (besides cash) are that he is very competitive (plays for fun but plays by the rules) and he is also a natural athlete. If I remember correctly, JT's been playing for about 4-5 years and is a true 6hc. No question that a 6hc has no chance of qualifying for a PGA tour event but consider his schedule: in the past 2 years JT has made a movie, released a new album, collaborated with about 20 other artists, done award shows, countless interviews, had a US tour, etc... My point being is that JT has a hectic schedule (like other celebs) and isn't at the range practicing for hours on end (it's usually only about 30 min a day) and he is still a 6hc. They just left for his 3 month European tour and there is a lot of golf scheduled but it's usually for a quick 9 or practice. Although JT loves golf, his passion is his music. JT is one of the very few to break out of the boy band typecast and make it to superstar status. I for one would not underestimate him.
I don't think its any different then mark mcgwire and Micheal Jordan following their golf dreams. I wish JT the best and that would be awesome to see him in some tour event if its just local pro circut like greygoose, hooters or the local us open qualifier.
It would be a good story, but not in a million years could he get from a 6 to a plus 2 or 3. He is a 6 at Bel Air or something but tourney pressure conditions and zero gimmees or improved lies and breaking 80 under those conditions is impossible for a country club 6.........impossible.
This is my last post for this thread....JT is the man...He has made mad cash as a boy bander and solo artist. I appreciate that he seems like a smooth cat and someone that is chill, and a cool guy(someone that if I could would hang out with). The bottom line is that unless he devotes himself to professional golf 40 plus hours a week he has no shot. He is athletic, agile, witty, funded, and dedicated...but is that enough???? I am not sure....the PGA tour and Nationwide players are special and they have something that no one in the world has....they have (IT)..that thing that separates them from us......
JT does not have that, he has it when it comes to boybandness or singing, or performing...but when it comes to golf..Tim Heron has it and JT does not....realize it and understand that PGA tour professionals are special and cannot be made with cash and limited time schedules....JT has a sweet dream and I appreciate that, but it is that....a dream.....
