My wife and I are planning a trip to Scotland sometime in Sept. we are planning on staying in Edinburgh. I am looking for any insights on what courses are must plays, and what pubs are must visits.

I don't care where you are in scotland, i think it's a must to play St. Andrews...it's about an hour drive from Edinbrugh, i got married there last march (06) and would move in there in a heart beat...from there, you can drive another 45 min and play Carnoustie....to me, those are 2 of the top 5 coursed in the British Open's rotation (Birkdale, Lythum, and troon)....i couldn't forgive myself for getting all the way to Scotland and NOT play The Old Course....i'd make a day out of it and take in the town...just an amazing place....

If your in edinburgh then you are spoilt for choice but as a minimum you must play North Berwick west links- it is stunning!

This is spot on.

If you're so close to St Andrews and you don't play it, you'll regret it. Carnoustie is also a good shout. 2 of the best courses in the world, not just on the Open Championship rotation.

more difficult to get on but have to try Muirfield (45 mins the other way from Edinburgh), also Gullane No1. And if near St Andrews, try to get on Kingsbarns. All it doesn't have is the history but the course is as good as you'll get

Also highly recommend Gleneagle's...
played there about a month and a half ago....

The King's Course is considered James Braids best...
spectacular...

St Andrews is obvious for clear reasons but if you want some real good settings either go north up to Royal Dornoch, Royal Aberdeen or Cruden bay or go west for troon and turnberry.

For cheaper holiday and staying close to Edinburgh try Gullaine, Longniddry and North Berwick and i really like rosemount north of Perth

Have fun it is the best place to play golf in the world
