Gold Nickel replaces Black Nickel.

Woah.

How have people skipped over this? Gold Nickel.

It's like the pimp daddy of the Vokey line immediately. Looking forward to seeing these.

I'm also looking forward to seeing things like the K grind come to retail. Very few things are easier then a Vokey K grind out of a trap or lush rough. Having that as a retail option instead of only a TVD offering is going to make a lot of people happy.
From the picture I saw earlier posted here, the gold nickel looked like a champagne color.  Quite elegant.

I missed the pic but it sounds excellent. March sounds less excellent, but that's ok. There's life in my SM4's yet.

As an aside, Geotech also has a really nice champagne colour on some of their Quelot heads that might match up nicely.

P.S. - that link now redirects to the general Titleist site... looks like it wasn't meant for public consumption.

I'm not well versed in what the different grinds actually do.  Can anybody explain the differences between F, S, M, K, and L?  And what type play or players are they good for?

I started looking this up a while ago... and since I was originally going to compare the grinds from one company to another (I think I have all the data from the major wedge companies)...but I never completed the compiling of my project so I have not yet posted my findings... all of this is available from most companies websites or other online sources..

I'm no expert - just delivering what I have found.

I appreciate the info.  I had actually just found it on the Vokey website when you posted it.  I have a steep wedge swing, and play in arkansas where it is usually pretty firm.  I am going with the F(full) grind on the 52*12 and the K grind on the 58*11.  I like to use my imagination and like to get the ball up in the air around the greens, so I think the K sounds like it will fit the bill nicely.  Actually just thinking about getting the 52*12 in the SM4 and saving a few dollars, and then getting the 60* in the SM5 since they will offer the K at normal retail price.  I'm just hoping that I don't spend my money on the SM4 just to find out that they found a way to build a lot more spin into the SM5.  Just have to decide between tour chrome and raw black.

I think they have made it too complicated for an average player to figure out what to get.

This is the reason I started putting together a "grind chart" that included all major wedge brands... lost interest but now re-motivated - hopefully it can add some clarity to the selection process.

Best thing to do is go to demo day and go through the grinds hitting different shots and see what feels the best through the turf and being able to hit the shots you want.  Otherwise is an expensive experiment thru trial and error.

I miss the "E" grind on the CC and Pre-CC spin milled wedges.  That grind was awesome, wish Vokey would bring it back on the 56 and 60 with the new grooves.

To be fair, there are a lot of options to choose from. Multiple lofts, multiple bounces, multiple finishes, and multiple grinds, and each grind gives the club pretty different playing characteristics. I don't know if its possible to make so many options any easier to digest?

I have the loft, bounce, and finish figured out.  It is the "grinds" that have me stumped. :dntknw:

Although they look great, simple, and clean, I will probably stick with the SM4's since the new grind/bounce options don't work as well for my swing as the old ones.

I wonder if the grooves are going to be a bit more aggressive - I found the SM4 amazing but I wished the 56 - 60 range spun a bit more. The mizuno and MD2 both spin a bit more...

I always wished the SM4's spun less!  Ha, that's golf for you.  Everyone's different.

I like playing for the pin and I'm getting around 10 feet of backspin on approach shots.  It's really messing with me as my previous vokey's (pre new grooves) were maybe a couple feet of backspin.  My 712MB's pretty much drop and stop, maybe a foot or two back from the mark.

I held off on getting new vokeys just because I knew they would spin so much more.

Can anybody shed light on:

1. When will these be released? If Spring 2014, does that mean March or does it mean May? Hopefully the earlier the better. For those of us that want to custom order these it would be nice to have them before the season starts.

2. Are they going to offer a raw wedge? If not, is the "black oilcan" really dark (like the black ox) or does it resemble the current oil can finish with a slightly darker hue?

Thanks!!

The Raw Black finish will be a raw wedge with a black PVD finish. Completely different from the SM4 oil can.

Still think the mack daddy 2 is the leader in terms of looks and novelty :)

The gap and sand wedges look awesome in the MD2 wedges, but whats up with the Lob wedges?  Way too round, want to like these wedges as have had callaway wedges in the past.  Not sure why they can't get a lob wedge right.......

Excited for new SM5 as love my SM4 wedges and some of the bounce / loft / grind combinations might suit me a little better than what I have.  Disappointed that Vokey lowered bounce on sand wedges tho, guess will have to get a 14 bounce version and maybe have it ground.  Wish he would have gone the other way with 10* in S, 12* in M.  A 10* M grind sand wedge is way too low bounce IMO.

Thanks!!

The PDF file said March 2014

The Raw Black finish will be a raw wedge with a black PVD finish. Completely different from the SM4 oil can.

Awesome. Thanks for the information guys!! I will be purchasing the PVD's in march.

I am always impressed by Titleist's ability to listen to the consumer and update their models accordingly. We said the stock shaft options weren't up to par in the 910's.. they upgraded the shafts in the 913's. We said we wanted a 712U.. they gave us a 712U. We said we wanted more grind options.. they are going to give us more options.
