I had the chance to watch Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey from the Big Break today. He was playing my home course in a Tarheel Tour event (very competitive mini tour - with several ex-pga/nationwide tour players)

I was THE gallery for his group. Great guys. He was in a threesome. The other two guys have PGA tour experience. I walked the first few holes ....Then after a few holes the third in his group asked if I wanted to ride in with him in his cart....sure......rode the rest of the 18 with the threesome

Gainey is CRAZY long...300+ all day...hit one 340+ hit 15 greens.3 fringes. couldnt get anything to fall...shot 69 (-3, T7) ..not an easy course..7,000+ 74 rating 140 slope... he made it look like a pitch and putt

18 is 540 par 5, dogleg right with water all down the right side. there was a 2 club wind in his face...Driver, 6 iron, putter = eagle...the only thing he made all day

Two things that stood out:

1. He might violate every fundamental of the modern golf swing! But it doesn't matter...it works for him

Grip: left thumb wraps under the shaft (baseball style) , right hand can't get any stronger

stance: as narrow as possible

posture for all shots: hunched over like he's putting a knee knocker downhill 3 footer

tempo: as quick as a hiccup

2. His equipment is like a hodge podge from the consigment rack at edwin watts

driver : cobra 454 comp (4 yrs old) with an aldila 65-S!!
3 wood ; callway warbird aldila 65 s
adams a2 hydrid 20* (from the big break)
irons : callaway x14 pro stock shaft
wedge : ping mb's
putter : odyssey 2 ball blade

It was simply amazing to watch him hit the shots he did.

He wouldn't divulge anything about the results from this season's show...but he did agree with most of our opinions about Gary.

He's my choice. Either him or his temp partner Bri.

I will echo the original post. Knowing Gloves for a couple of years now and playing with him a handful of times in a few events, practice rounds and obviously from my time with him on the big break to say that he has game is an understatment. His biggest asset is his fearless attitude. He is not afraid of anything and he will tell you that. Yeah he is powerful off the tee but it is his shortgame that takes him deep. Just a little example of his power. Gloves and I along with a current PGA tour player were playing a practice round a year ago. Par 3 210 slightly downhill. Steve and I hit 5 irons....T hit an 8 iron. I do not care where you are from, anytime you have that type of power you have such an advantage. Oh bye the way, I took the money that day  Power + nasty shortgame = going deep. Gloves will break through just give him a couple of years...

Had a chance to follow Tommy around today on his front nine holes. It was a fun experience watching him play, he's got some serious game. Unfortunately he had a tough back nine and finished T-5th with a 74.
