My swing has undergone a major overhaul the past year. As a result, I am striking the ball better and longer. I have also recently gone to Adams CMB's with C-Tapers (4-PW) and am loving the results. I am finding that I play my 4 and 5 irons off the tee of par 4's versus fairway woods. My 4 iron over the past 4 rounds has been consistently around 245-255/hole.

I am looking to enhance with additional clubs; specifically driving irons versus hybrids. My question is what is the best feeling driving iron; i.e.: does anyone recommend any? Hybrids rarely appeal to me visually and/or I'm fighting from turning it over too much.

Thanks for the help.

There are so many good ones available right now, it has become one of those clubs that the OEM's seemed to have jumped on recently. A few worth looking at are:

Callway X-utility
Mizuno H4/Fli-Hi
Adams DHY - coming soon
Titleist 712U - coming soon though limited
Yonex Zero iron
TM TP

There are others but those are the ones that spring to mind. You can't go wrong with any of these, it will likely come down to what you can get your hands on to try beforehand and what looks good to you.

Have a look at the new Cleveland 588-MT's if you get a chance. Very driving iron-like, and at $88 listed retail per club, a heckuva bargain. I've only hit the 3 & 4 at the range off mats, but came away quite impressed. Really nice feel and sound. Stock steel 85 gram shaft isn't too bad either. Not for big swingers, but it should hold up for a lot of people. I've heard Keegan has at least one of these in the bag with a Miyazaki graphite of some sort in it.

The best "driving iron" fo "1-iron" for me really isn't actually an "iron" at all, but rather a 14* TaylorMade Rescue-Mid TP #2 Hybrid with a 42" Vista Pro 90 (stiff tip) shaft.  I think of it as my "modern day" driving iron or 1-iron which should not seem all that strange since hybrids were orgiinally designed to replace long irons.   (Of course, as we all know hybrids these days often replace Fairway woods as well).

I can hit this club low or high and it is just as effective off the tee as it is from the fairway.  It can easily replace a 3-Wood as well, and is much easier to hit than most 3-Woods and driving iron type uility club.  With a bit of practice you can even hit "stingers" with this hybrid, but when you choose to hit it higher it will stop quickly on the green.   The trend in hybrid has been away from these lower lofts, but I like this 14* loft very much indeed.

Be careful not to get locked in to just an "iron" type of club.  Play what works best on the course and allows you to hit a variety of shots there.

For me the Callaway X-Utility works wonders. Feels great, forgiving, playable from every lie. Everything I was looking for... plus it´s longer than I expected, so I had to get the 24° as well to mess around with. ;)

I couldn't wait to get my Callaway X Utility & was so disappointed when I saw the offset on it, had Callaway bend it to try to get the look more square but no dice. I didn't hit it bad & it felt good but it just didn't fit my eye so I didn't put it in play. I am waiting to get the older X Tour utility iron as I've been told it doesn't have as much offset, I've hit the H4 & those are phenomenal. I'd have to say Mizuno has the best driving iron out but for me I've kept my TaylorMade Tour Preferred 2u driving iron in the bag. I hit the hell out of it & fits my eye, guess I'm just stubborn to switch because I love the Mizuno H4 a lot but when it comes to fairway woods/irons/wedges I don't like to change when I have something that feels, looks, & I hit great. But hands down best out are the Mizuno driving irons.

thanks everyone for your feedback. I will look at the H4 with C-Tapers. Considering how much I'm loving the shaft set up I look forward to bombing the 2 and 3 iron. Hopefully not much offset. Cheers All.

I have the x utility 21 and love it. Felt much better compared to 588mt and h4. Very hot and forgiving while still having a "players" feel. Thin shots still get up and go. Blends very well with my i20 4-pw set. Only negative... it's terrible out of the rough, such a low face and the ball goes no where if you hit the top, not the biggest problem for me however since I've got a 17 degree hybird as well that's very versatile.

Best Jack's hit is the Srixon zr-uti.
Forged hollow head, best balanced driving iron JP has hit.

Your results may not be as good as a Jack Pearsall's, but then, you are at a decided disadvantage.

There's a used one priced well on EBay.

I decided since I liked my Taylormade Rocketbladez Tour irons, I custom ordered a 3 iron that I am having bent 2 degrees to get me to 17. Use that as my driving iron.

Figure my 4 iron is between 220 and 240 so my 3 iron being bent should be close to 260 at least.
