Plug here for Rancourt. They hand make everything, and use top-notch leather. Pretty well priced, too.

I'm on the AE trend. I have a weird obsession with shoes. I have a rather large foot 14-14.5 and I have tried many different pairs of dress shoes and these always fit me the best. I have sent mine back to get recrafted many times (actually have a pair getting done now) they come back looking brand new without the break in process. Yes, they are a little expensive but essentially could last a lifetime with a new sole every once in a while.

Mephisto for dress shoes (lace up). Clark's for my loafers. Need a new pair and am thinking about J&M.

Depends on price point of course.

I find Boss shoes to be un-exciting....they're just "ok".

I do like some of the Cole Haan line for something lower priced.
Although I'm not sure the price is justified I do like the classic looking shoes in Prada's lineup (they do have some that are as ugly as s***!)
Ted Baker has some decent shoes.
Florshiem makes a decent shoe as well that isn't too spendy.
Big fan of Paul Smith.

Chicago sales tax kind of sucks though.  Its like New York for me, now we have all the same crap in Columbus so I don't bother buying much of anything when I'm there.  Unless of course it's something I can't get in Columbus or is on sale or I jsut have to have it.

Correct. Sales Tax is high. If your looking for something specific though they have it all. You can always try things on and order them online somewhere else cheaper.

I'd worry about the fitting of high-end shoes purchased online... Sure, a good seller will work to make things right if the shoes don't fit right, but I'd rather just get it right the first time and not waste the time...

Used to wear the good Johnston Murphy cap toe/wing tip.

Still keep some but now I wear Ecco, absurdly comfortable.

Footjoy classic spikeless. For whatever reason they are much more comfortable than the spiked versions. And, look pretty darn nice too.

I wear dress shoes 10-20 times a year.  Had to wear them a couple of nights ago, and I wore Eccos (not even the high end ones, but the $170 ones).  Comfortable is correct.

I have a pair of dress shoes made by Church's.(Shannon crup burgund)  Bought them downtown Chicago.
Put them on, walked out the store, and wore them to a convention. Stood all week in them.
Pulled them out the other night.
Still the best looking, fitting, shoe I've ever owned. Worth every cent!

I pretty much only wear Allen Edmonds now.  Once broken in they are so comfortable.  Here are a couple of my favorites.

In the winter I wear a couple pairs of Ecco because I like the rubber sole on them if it gets a little sloppy out

My wife got me my first pair of ecco's when we were still dating. She used to sell tons of them out of the shoe store she worked at during her college years. When i was still doing IT and had to be on my feet most of the day they were perfect with the slacks and dress shirts I wore. I ended up buying 2 more "dress" shoes and my wife bought me the ecco premiers when they first came out. I've tried a couple of other dress shoe brands but nothing comes close to the comfort level that the ecco's provide

Eccos have become my favorites.

I had some CH and the sole blew out on them fairly quickly.  JM are also very good.  I have a couple pairs of these that rotate in and out, but the Eccos are my favorites by far.  Haven't tried AE yet, but hear excellent things.

Pretty much the reason I try to avoid rubber soled dress shoes.  Most decent leather soled shoes can be re-cobbled, and I tend to blow out my heels quickly anyway.

Rubber boot soles are great though, if you're on your feet a ton.

I have 3 pairs of Ecco work shoes and besides fitting/feeling like gloves, the rubber soles last forever. Some kind of nanotechnology or something. The heels don't wear and with regular professional shines, I'm talking 4 or 5 years and the leather is still supple. I just never wear the same shoes 2 days in a row.

They are not super buttoned up type shoes like if you are going to meet Henry Kravis but they wear with a suit day to day.

Can't speak highly enough aout these.

The few pair of Ecco shoes I have I bought in 2008, wore them a lot for 3 or so years and they look brand new.  The rubber sole on the Eccos is nothing like the rubber on the cole hanns or other brands like that.  It's thicker and made from a different composite.  Very durable.

I don't wear my Eccos often anymore because I love the look of my AEs and how they feel like a glove (I find the Eccos a little looser in all areas and almost a little sloppy).

For me...nothing more classic than a thick soled full brogue.
My fav's are Dack's....unfortunately this Canadian company went bankrupt.
I take care of them and have 3 pairs that are 20 years old.....also rotate them among 5 other dress shoes.
