What is the best 3 wood out there? Is there one 3 wood that does everything well?

Which 3 wood is the...
  • Longest?
  • Most forgiving?
  • Best off the deck?

My vote would be for the 913fd.  I have tried most 3 woods out there and so far it is by far my favorite.  It really does everything well and it looks and feels great.  The G25 is also a good choice, but I liked the stock shaft options better in the 913.  I haven't hit the new Adams 3 woods but last years XTD's where pretty good, but they had a lot of issues with weights falling off.  I was never a big RBZ fan but supposedly the stage2 is long-ier/better-ier-er than the original.

I'm a big fan of the TEE CB series.  Incredible feel, sound, distance, and looks.  Haven't found anything I like better.

In addition to the various TEE FW models, reco's you're sure to get here include Cally XHot Pro, RBZ/RBZ Stage 2, Titleist 910/913, Ping i20/k15/G15/G20/G25, Cleveland FL, Mizuno MP650, TM V-Steel, Adams XTD/F11/BTY, Sonartec, ........

+1 for the TEE CB series. I love the Tour Edge Exotics CB4 & CB5. First woods to retire my 6 year old Titleist 906F2 in 2012.

No three wood is going to be best all around in all three categories because two of the categories conflict with each other (most forgiving and best off the deck play tug of war with each other).

"Most forgivin"g implies a high MOI and large sweet spot. That requires head volume. One aspect of head volume (head depth) works against hitting it good from the fairway; the deeper the head, the more forgiving from the tee and fluffy lies, but the less forgiving from the tight lie. We can get good horizontal MOI from the deck with a wide head, but not good vertical MOI.

"Longest" comes from high COR (hot face), launch and spin and a head that matches your swing. The better ballstriker can find equal distance in small heads or large heads, but the poor ballstriker may not, so that is back to "most forgiving". For a poor ballstriker, the longest (consistently) will be the most forgiving, but possibly not the easiest from the deck.

I think you have to pick your poison. Pick 2 out of 3 criteria that are most important (or rank those 3 criteria in priority of order) and evaluate heads that fall within those constraints.

I play 2 different fairways, a deep face (TEE XCG6 13 degree) from the tee, and a medium depth face from fairway (TEE CB4 16.5 degree 4 wood). I have confidence in the deep face and never hit a popup with it from the tee. But I can flat out bomb it with confidence up to about 15 yards short of my driver. If I had to pick one, though, it would be the TEE CB4 or CB5 4-wood because of versatility. A shallower face wood is more versatile and can be hit sweet from the tee or deck, whereas a deep face is tough to hit good from tight lies simply because the depth of the face puts the center of mass too high in relation to the ball. Sort of like hitting driver off the deck, you simply cannot get the ball in the sweet spot on a deep face, so you have to accept the feel of thin contact and low trajectory. Great ballstrikers don't have this problem as much but it still is an issue of physics.

I generally suck at 3 woods. and for that reason I have kept the old trusty titleist 980f with s300 shaft in the bag for I guess around 10 years off and on. Have tried a few others but am way too inconstant off the deck. I gotta say, I'm only one round in but this new xhot pro 17* is pretty darn awesome. I hit 6 shots with it Saturday. 4 off the tee, very  slight draw or dead straight in the 250 range. My first ever swing with it I was 253 into a par 5 a little down wind. I figured what the hell. A rocket that flew directly over the flag, ball mark was 10 paces in back of the flag. Bounced into the bunker behind the green.. 235 is/was my general go/no go range for the old titleist. Hopefully the honeymoon phase lasts a while because I was having fun with this thing. I'm a 7.2 index fwiw.

I'd vote for Ping G15. However, I myself play TM Burner SF 2.0 4-wood 16.5. I just don't like to bring 2 wood. Also I found it easier to hit 4 wood instead of 3 wood with no significant differences in distance.

On the other hand, if everyone used the search feature instead of posting, and we all thought "there is no best, just best for you" (which is relativism, and not true because there are some basic absolutes in club technology), and we all "go get fitted" rather than discuss shiny new clubs we dont need, then there wouldnt be much point of a discussion forum.

Remember forum populations are a mix of long term members, lurkers, and a continually renewed segment of newcomers that like to talk golf. What also makes me laugh is the predictable folks laughing at other folks threads.

Who was laughing?

And the Best For You is totally relevant. Because it is a mixed bag you will get 30 different responses based on what people play and like. That hardly helps anyone and at worst confuses people. We can do discuss all different types of equipment on here but there is no best of anything.  It was not meant to be funny, it's actually a fact.

I've never hit a fairway metal as forgiving, as solid as my PING K15 ! I would love to see it performs with a much better performance shaft than my stock TFC but damn, This thing is long and forgiving.

Accuracy is the word with this thing. I can hit it wherever I want. High shots to power fade.

Even with tight space I'm not afraid to reach greens.

HAHA  I'm laughing at you laughing at others laughing at threads!!!   CRAZY.

seriously though, sift through the threads and you will see a pattern.  Like I said..I like discussion and I never said one shouldn't make the threads, but they always go the same way.

10 people chime in with 10 different clubs.  Is there really any "best" at this point?  such a subjective thing, and there is so much great stuf.  I have a hard time believing there is a "best"

your mileage may vary.

I hit the RFX longer and more accurate than all the others. Stock shaft just works for me. I had the stage 2 and am selling it now, wanted to like the x hot but the RFX just won out for me. Going 4w and 7w.

These questions are kind of useless unless you give us things like your swing speed, ability to elevate the ball and if you like to use your 3 wood off of the tee.

Generic questions are pointless but specific questions can lead to a decent discussion.

Of the clubs I've tried, I'd have to say that the 910fd is the all around winner.  The 13* is pretty demanding off the deck...but is a second-driver when you tee it up.  But I the 15* gets the all around nod if we count the ease in hitting off the deck.

Callaway Razr Fit fairway wood!

Super cheap right now because of all the newer woods and It's one of the easiest fairway woods i've every played (tee & deck).  It's plenty long and straight.  It really does not get much coverage on most forums, but more people should really try it out.  I switch the stock shaft out to a Project X Black 6.0 and it's money!

I absolutely love titleist fairway woods, mostly because they have always been open at address which I find to be far more comfortable to look at. I also recently picked up a TEE cb5 13 degree which will mostly be for tee balls. I haven't hit many fairway woods, if any, that are more workable than a titleist though.

Dare I say, in my experience, most 'players' gravitate towards these two brands of fairway metals.

These questions are kind of useless unless you give us things like your swing speed, ability to elevate the ball and if you like to use your 3 wood off of the tee.

Generic questions are pointless but specific questions can lead to a decent discussion.

You go through life with blinders on, you only see part of the picture.

If you ask too many generic questions, you never solve the problem.

Oh?  I see.  So, why don’t you tell me what I was after since you seem to be a know it all.   What problem am I trying to solve?  I wasn’t aware I had a problem but apparently I do.  Enlighten us ye great one with blinders.

This is some good advice but unfortunately we don't know if the OP is a hack or a player.  Maybe he'll tell us but I've lost interest in this topic.

What is the best 3 wood out there? Is there one 3 wood that does everything well?

Which 3 wood is the...
  • Longest?
  • Most forgiving?
  • Best off the deck?

Longest?  One mans high bombs might be another mans ballooning, fall out of the sky with no distance club.

Most forgiving?  In case you missed the other threads on this.....the K15 seemed to get the majority of the votes.

Best off the deck?  Again it seems you missed the other threads that also gave the PING K15 this title too.  But by "best", I'm assuming you mean easiest to elevate.

Good day.

The search is over for me. I put a PING K15 3 with reg flex stock shaft in the bag this weekend. It went very straight for me when I put a good swing on it. The trajectory was very nice - penetrating not ballooning. I would rate it very easy to hit off the deck.
