Dear all,

I would like to purchase a new driver with adjustable loft.   I'm a 6 handicap/short game/putting player but 18 handicap driver.   I just need something that goes straight :)   My biggest problem with my previous driver is too low of a launch, even at 10.5 loft and lots of backspin.  I kinda have a deceding swing that I cannot get rid of.

Which driver is the longest and be the most forgiving adjustable loft?

Thanks,

T

I love the R1 and Nike CT, bought them both.  I have hit the amp cell pro but for whatever reason it did not get along with me and I like cobra products!  Each person is going to get different results with every club out there but for me I loved the feel and the adjustability of the R1.  The CT is very close though and I would have no issues in putting that in bag#1.

Probably the Covert...  if you need higher launch with lower spin maybe even the covert tour.

When i hit them the covert tour was the winner in feel, looks, and distance, but didnt beat my razr fit

My pick out of those is the Covert Tour. Even the performance version coupled to a better shaft would beast your other two choices.

I hit them all yesterday an the hands down winner was Titleist 913 D3 with Aldila RIP 80X. Nike didnt have a shaft that fit me at all so that may reflect my dislike of the Covert tour. I demoed everything at lowest possible loft and all the way open. The Nike fitting guy told me to try a shaft tipped 1.5 inches but where can you demo that?. If I were to buy a new driver right now it would be the 913 D3. I know it isn't technically "adjustable loft" but it was the best I hit. Cobra- so so. Taylormade- hell no. Covert tour- 2nd choice. Cobra was highest launching though

Big T,

You really can not go wrong with any one of those choices.  Hit all 3 and go with the one that fits your eye the best.  You could easily play any of these and the results would be great.

Personally I have a R1 and it's terrific. The R1 naturally launches a bit low so make sure you get the proper shaft for your swing. I thought the crown graphics were going to be distracting but they have proven to be a huge asset in reducing all of the white and really assist with framing the ball.

It'll bump the spin up too... A 10.5* driver will never spin less than an 8.5* driver of the same head and shaft.

While that's true, a person that needs a 10.5* head doesn't need low spin.

not necessarily... some guys need the extra launch, but they have too much spin. It's not unheard of. Anyways. Go with the cover tour or performance and the tour shaft... no upcharge and a much better shaft than the black.

Not a fan of the Cobra or the TM. The Nike Covert Tour was the best I've hit of the 3. With all the technology at the Golf stores you should be able to get a driver Fit to you without being limited to the 3 totally adjustable choices. Most stores will return the fitting fee if you buy from them. If your going to spend the cash might as well be fit to the right one. That being said love my Titleist d3 but have hit my sons Razor Fit and thats a great club too.

Agree, might as well get fit.

But what was your previous driver?

Coming from last year's Nike VRS, I didn't find the Covert a big enough difference to upgrade. I dislike the feel of all Taylormade drivers since the R7, so no R1 for me. But after playing 1 round with the stock shaft in the Cobra Amp Cell (non-pro), I liked the feel and forgiveness enough to try another round with a better shaft. I've always gotten along with Cobra drivers, back to the S9 Pro-S which I bombed.

I really like my Razr Fit 9.5*, I compared it to all the new options with my gamer shaft (AD DI 7x) and 9.5* or as close as i could get and the Razr Fit was right there with all I them mostly bc it is the optimum driver fit for me with the Razr Fit head, 9.5* loft and the AD DI shaft. I have never hit a driver that gave me better or more consists t numbers.

I tried the covert, covert tour, R1, Razr Fit Extreme, and X Hot all with my AD DI 7.
They were all equal exept the FIT extreme which was about 5 yards longer due to 200 RPMs less spin than the best results of the others (original Razr fit 9.5* 2485 RPMs, 265 carry, 11.0 launch; Fit extreme 9.5*, 2280 RPMs, 270 carry, 11.4 Launch.

Everything else was tied with the Razr fit or a 5 yards shorter. But nothing could compare to the looks and feel of my Razr Fit so I will be keeping it another year.

If you need launch and forgiveness I would go with the G25 or the X Hot bc the Razr Fit is the optimum club for me but maybe not you since you have a descending driver swing and need launch. The Razr Fit is really Mid launch, low spin and pretty forgiving.

Eventually though if you want full potential out of your drives you will have to hit up on the ball.

I currently game an R1, but if you get the Covert Performance model with a good aftermarket shaft, it is probably the better option. I tried the Covert Performance with a AD DI 6x and it was probably one of the best drivers I have hit. My launch was up and spin was down considerably. If only the AD DI didn't cost $300 :P

Eariler this season I was in the same boat as you with a similar handicap and short game strengths that made up for my poor driving.  My flat swing plane at impact was not ascending so my 9-degree driver was never getting to the proper trajectory.  When shopping for a new driver I tried the Callway RFE, Nike Covert Tour, Taylormade R1 Black, and Cobra Amp Cell.  Without swapping out shafts my quick unscientific summary was Callway RFE (felt great, good dispersion), Nike Covert Tour (awesome feel but spun way way too much), Taylormade R1 Black (winner winner chicken dinner), and Cobra Amp Cell (felt great, even better dispersion than the RFE).

I ended up going with the TM R1Black and had my club fitter match a shaft to it, Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue.  Trajectory looks great and spin numbers around 1800 RPM.  I went from anxiety on the tee box to now enthusiasm and confidence.  Honestly aesthetics played a part and I was biased towards the RFE and R1 Black; the Cobra looked too much like a toy to me (here comes the WRX snake bites) but is a solid performer.

Go to a B&M store like Roger Dunn, buy one, play with it and if you don't like it, swap it for the other. They generally give you 3 chances. What you get in the LM may not reflect what you actually hit off the tee box....as I found out.

You'll know and support your local B&M store :)

PS I swapped out my Adams F12 LS with a Fubuki Alpha for an Amp Cell Pro with the real Kurokage. Great sound and this thing won't go left on me. The Smart Pad is also amazing for a square head as well. Much better than the R1 or R11 ASP.

I am a huge TM hater, but man, I actually love the look of the R1 matte white and graphics.  I have a feeling I will try to sneak one of the V2 TP R1's as soon as they go down another $100 bucks or so.

I've had all 3 and ended up with the Nike Covert.Liked it even better than the Callaway X Hot.I'm not a big fan of Nike but the Covert woods rock.I didn't care at all for the R1.I hit it a little low.I also made a couple of adjustments in my swing which have helped me greatly. :golfer:

Out of those mentioned I would choose the cobra or covert. The cobra has color choices so that may swing your vote. I r1 feels like a dud to me. Good driver but I do not like them.
