I was looking and didn't see anyone else post this.  At lunch I was watching CNBC and they said that there is talk about Nike possibly buying Adidas.  Doesn't Adidas own Taylor Made?  If this were to happen then Nike would really have a competitive advantage on tour.  Just wanted to see if anyone else had heard about this

That would be some serious crazy news. Does Nike really have the cap to buy Adidas though?

I'm Titleist loyal so it doesn't bother me either way, just posting what I heard.

I can't believe that Nike would have the funds to buy Adidas. These two companies together have such a strong hold on the footwear community it would be insane if they joined forces.

Interesting news though.

Golf implications aside, given that Adidas also owns Reebok, this would be a pretty huge deal.   It would really give Nike a monopoly in a lot of areas.

As big as it would be for golf, it would be even bigger in hockey equipment.  Nike would own the Bauer, RBK, CCM, and Jofa brands.

I expect that were this to happen, there is a lot of stuff that the combined company would have to spin off to gain approval.

I don't doubt Nike has the capital to outright buy Adidas only, however Taylor Made and Adidas are owned by Salomon Sports (primarily known for skiing equip.)  I would find that acquiring all of these brands would be a stretch.

Salomon group was acquired by adidas is December 1997 but was sold off to AmerSports (parent of Wilson) in  late 2005.

given the poor ski season we've been experiencing world wide I wouldn't be surprised if Salomon was looking to free up some cash, because they sure aren't moving skis, bindings and boots for sure, but not skis

really i think buying adidas would be a slightly bigger move than aquiring converse....just slightly.

i doubt this move would happen just becuase of the huge marketshare that would be swallowed up, again adidas owns reebok and from a footwear standpoint combining arguably the three biggest names in footwear would definately be monoploizing the market.

Well Nikes market cap is $27.5B and Adidas is $10.5B  all in USD....  so from the outside it is possible but very expensive for Nike.  I dont know...  but with the M&A market and private equity anything can happen.

A lot of companies have a general policy about not commenting on rumors; at least the smart ones.

I doubt a deal like this will take place 1) because it just doesn't make a ton of sense (a lot of overlap, difficulties of streamlining), and 2) the potential regulatory nightmares just wouldn't make it worth the price whatever that could possibly be...

There has always been talk about Nike buying out Adidas...think outside of gol though.  Just as there was always talk of Nike buying out Reebok.

It won't happen.

adidas just got reebok also

i would not like that, im a die hard adidas guy (only shoes besdies dress showes i have worn since 3rd grade have been adidas...wear nothing else)

i would be shocked, because that would be a HUGE purchase for nike, and why would adidas want to sell?

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Shares of German sporting goods maker Adidas AG (ADSG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) rose as much as 3.4 percent on Monday on market talk it could be a takeover target, traders said.

About 3.2 million shares had traded by 1056 GMT, higher than the stock's 90-day average trading volume of 2.37 million. Adidas shares were up 1.6 percent at 38.47 euros by 1104 GMT having earlier climbed to 39.13 euros.

"There are rumors in the market that Nike (NKE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) was bidding for Adidas," one trader said.

Some analysts said the rumor was unfounded, adding that it makes no sense for Nike to buy Adidas.

"If you look at the financial power of Nike, it would be possible for them (to buy Adidas)", said Tim Burkhardt, an analyst at LBBW. "But I am not convinced that it is really an option or that Nike is really interested in Adidas."

Another analyst said buying Adidas "would be a regulatory nightmare for Nike".

He added: "There are always these rumors in the market. Sometimes Nike is buying Puma (PUMG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), sometime Adidas."

Adidas declined to comment.

Nike could not be reached for comment.

You do realise that would mean near complete domination of the sports gear monopoly. You do realise when there is no competitor, we are all subject to their total control. What that means to us consumer? No competition for price/ quality/ new technology. So imagine NO new annual products; also expensive and shoddy goods... SIGH, God help us all if that happens.....

P/S: also means lower sponsorship for sports clubs/ teams/ franchise/ individuals as there is no choice/competition to sign up big clubs/individuals...

Be a hrd acquisition I would bet. Anti-trust issues would be hard to overcome given the marketshare combination. Addidas bought Reebok a few years back. Don't know what they gain either.

I can’t stand Nike, they make good shoes but when they started getting in to the sporting goods market I started disliking them.  There products have gotten better over the years but I remember when they tried to get into the baseball market they made nothing but junk their bats were dead and gloves were cheep.  Then it seemed like they just tried to get into everything just to make a buck from basketball to hockey and then golf I never really liked any of their products they have always seemed like they are so unoriginal and generic.  God I hope they don’t buy Taylormade I will never buy one of their products again except maybe shoes.

I only wear adidas after Nike shoes turned to crap 4-5 years ago.  Adidas running shoes, Adidas Barricade 4 for tennis, and Adidas 360 for golf.  I hate to have to find a new brand if they did buy them.  I think it would be very expensive but I am sure Nike could do it but I sure as hell hope they don't.
