Some really great things have been happening down at the Jim McLean Junior Academy in Forth Worth, Texas.
Quietly Justin Poynter, Director of Instruction at the JMJA has put together one of the premier junior golf academies in the nation and it is producing some top notch junior golf talent.
According to Mr. Poynter " We provide the atmosphere and the coaching to develop the skills and knowledge for any junior golfer to compete at the college level and beyond. "
The JMJA began in 2009 with one student and a protocol to develop players. The program is constantly producing results which is newsworthy. The JMJA has had only 27 players complete the program. The limited yearly enrollment of twenty-four allows the JMJA to choose it participants. Students attend classes at nearby Spring Creek academy 4 days a week for 2 and a half hours a day.
Students also get to attend Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks games and also numerous college football and basketball games.
Since 2009 , the following JMJA golfers have committed to play collegiate golf:
Brad Dalke University of Oklahoma
Tezira Abe University of Texas
Lakareber Abe University of Alabama
Blaise Carabello Mississippi State University
Taylor Mihok New Mexico State University

Kirsten Pike Dallas Baptist University
Charter Lawson University of Missouri-Kansas City
Rayvaun Christenson Missouri State

Haley Mills University of Kentucky
Maddie Szeryk Texas A&M University
Justin Miller Brown University
Many more will be committing in the near future!
The JMJA utilizes the following resources to consistently develop players.
Instruction
The Jim McLean System is TOTAL game teaching. The teachers identify and improve each student's specific needs. The teacher will focus on the areas that will foster improvement in the student's ability to play golf--shoot lower scores!!! Examples could include chipping, pitching, wedge play, bunker, driving, iron play, shot shaping, various lies, trajectory control, weather/wind skills, etc. Students use intelligent practice, consistently work on solid fundamentals, and make progress in small segments. Students enjoy the advantage of state of the art equipment such as Trackman, SAM Putt Lab, Golf Biodynamics, JC Video swing analysis software, and much more.
Athletic Development
Ben Hogan Sports manages the students’ athletic development. Every student completes a functional movement screen to properly assess and identify his or her specific physical abilities and limitations. Based on this assessment, students are given personalized corrective exercise and conditioning plans to help them reach their athletic potential.
To ensure proper nutritional requirements for peak performance, students receive a meal plan from sports dietitian Amy Goodson MS, RD, CSSD, LD. Proper nutrition aids students in increasing their muscular strength, improving body composition, and enhancing mental acuity and alertness. Amy Goodson serves as the sports dietitian for the Dallas Cowboys, Hunter Mahan, TCU athletics, and the Texas Rangers baseball club. For residential students, breakfast, lunch, and dinner is prepared by Fitness Fare. In collaboration with Amy, Chef Eric Tonips will prepare meals for the students that improve health and performance.
Mental Training
Dr. Fran Pirozzolo. Dr. Pirozzolo is a licensed consulting psychologist who has worked with many of the world's top athletes and is currently the Mental Skills Coach for the Texas Rangers Baseball Club. Tournaments
Students travel throughout the state and compete in tournaments throughout year. Events may include American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) events, Texas Legends Junior Tour (TLJT) events, or other top tournaments. Students learn to prepare for a tournament like a TOUR professional. They are taught to have a strategic plan for each course and tournament, utilize practice rounds, scout courses, and be adaptable for various weather conditions. In order to enhance their competitive development, instructors travel to each event to supervise and observe the students in tournament play. Using their observations and detailed statistics from each tournament, instructors are able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each student’s game. This information allows the instructor to create an individualized practice plan in order to create better performance.
Facilities
Students have complete access to one of the premier practice facilities in the nation.
Many PGA, LPGA, Web.com and Champions players train at the Jim McLean golf facility including Jason Day, JJ Henry, Willie Wood, Mark Brooks, Wendy Ward, Stephanie Louden and many others.
Students interact with these stars on a daily basis.
A 14,000 square foot performance center includes five indoor bays, putting studio, club repair room, 3,500 sq. ft. fitness facility, Full Swing simulator, and the Fitness Fare Café. On the range, students hit Titleist NXT practice balls to numerous target greens. The students are also able to utilize the 50,000 square foot short game area to sharpen their skills. This area includes a Bent grass green, Champions Bermuda green, and a large practice bunker. There is a 150 by 100 yard multipurpose area to improve their wedge game. Students are members of both the Legends Par 3 Course and the WaterChase Golf Club. These challenging layouts provide a variety of opportunities for students to test and develop their game.
Clubfitting
An integral part of the student’s development is being fit for the correct equipment. In short, playing with properly fit equipment throughout the entire set helps students play better golf as well as help them make any necessary swing improvements. All students are fit outdoors and have their clubs consistently monitored utilizing the TrackMan™ Launch Monitor. This technology measures each student’s club delivery and the full trajectory of any shot ranging from short pitches to long drives. Students have access to a large selection of testing equipment to ensure the right specifications as well as the best combination of clubs in their bag.
