I had some time to kill this past weekend so paid a visit to the local Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith and PGA Superstore.  Swinging the same demo club the readings I got were all over the place.  My driver SS had a range of 88-102 and carry from anywhere from 245-205 and all the other pertinent data had a wide range as well. When I asked the employees how accurate the readings were they all say "Very accurate."   I will be fit soon with a fitter that has a Trackman, but what is the average guy off the streets supposed to do when he walks into one of these stores? I mean how accurate can they all be?

I have a local store that has 4 launch monitors and I get different readings from all 4.  Thankfully their latest purchase was a trackman so that is the only one I trust from here on out.

While I don't know the numbers at all for my drive swing, it still is clear to Jack Pearsall when he bombs one, or 50 or none.

None? - pearsall the thought!!!!

Had the same thing happen recently. Freaked me out. I hit four buckets at the range the next day then went back in with my own driver and all was well in the world again.

I don't know Launch Monitor, I have only tried a TrackMan. But don't be frustrated.

I can tell you - speaking of myself - the best fitting I can get is together with my coach and my caddy. Then I use my feel and my eyes (so I can see the ball flight, carry and how the ball roll out) and my common sense. I literally don't give a TrackMan anything. I know it can help you with many things, but if I know I can hit it 285 carry each time with my swing, I really don't want to get confused and lose confidence, just because a TrackMan is saying I am swinging the club "wrong" or I am using the wrong shaft.

No thank you. In the end it's all about feel and confidence on the tee, so you can hit that fairway every time.

Any idea which launch monitor showed those strange variances?  I hit balls at golftec in the winter and I've found their launch monitor to be quite accurate.  They use Foresight launch monitors but I'm not sure on the brand or software version...

If I hit a cut, the ball cuts.  If I take a little off, I get my expected yardage.  High balls are high.  Low balls are low.

Golfsmith had the Foresight monitors, the PGA Superstore had About Golf and I believe Golf Galaxy had Foresight as well.  Can't wait to get on the Trackman to compare.

I've used the foresight GC2 quite a bit, and it is very accurate for ball data (ball speed, launch angle, spin, etc.). But it's very easy to change the configuration to mess with the distance - there's a 'shot distance boost' setting that can be used to alter the distance. Also, I believe the club head speed info is computed based on ball speed and an assumed smash factor.
So basically if you're comparing one club to another on the same GC2 I think it's very good. If you're comparing your distances on two different GC2 units, then you need to double check all the settings.

Right...if you use the same LM...could you pick the driver with the best numbers since the LM should be consistant regardless of how it's configured?

I really wish I could get on a trackman.  The closest one from my location is 4-5 hours away.  Very frustrating.

They are not scientific instruments and the people operating them Re normally not qualified.  It seems at most stores anybody can just walk up and start hitting while pushing buttons.  It's a wonder they work at all.

Around half that...but 10K is still not easy to justify by any means.  Believe me...I have tried.

flightscopes for all intents and purposes are just as accurate as a trackman and have alot of the same bells and whistles, just a lot more affordable

If I want a computer to tell me how far I hit the ball, I'll play Tiger Woods on my PS3.
