Lost: € 10.50 (equivalent of 3 beers)
Won: € 3.50 (equivalent of one beer)

So, reading this thread finally makes me understand why so many people on this site are so adamant about playing the most forgiving clubs you can get.
Is playing for that much money really so common in the US?

Edited by avrag, 15 February 2013 - 12:40 PM.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Depends on the crowd. I've witnessed guys lose cars, clubs and huge amounts of money. In my experience it has been the guys playing straight-up golf - no strokes - that has the potential to get the most out of control.

I've lost maybe $17.  I've won maybe $40.  I'm kind of a nit.

The funniest thing I've ever seen on a golf course was when a buddy of mine was begging for a bet.  He had hit his drive into the rough and still had 120 yds to the pin.  The rough was pretty heavy.   He wants somebody to take a $2 bet that he can birdie from there.  Another one of my budies takes the bet.  Well, buddy #1 hits his shot, it bounces one, hits the pin a drops in for eagle.  Every body is jumping up and down and hooping and hollering.  Buddy #2 walks up and says "great shot, give me my $2."  The bet was $2 on a birdie and buddy #1 made eagle.

Since I only play with friends and acquaintances, I don't bet much money.   A good friend of mine said that when you are wishing ill tidings on your playing partner, you're probably wagering too much.  However, to the OP's question, I once lost $80 playing Wolf.  Conversely, I once won $60 playing Wolf.

Typically my bets are $3 to $5 a side and $1 birdies.  Usually, no more than $10 or $12 changes hands and the way I figure, by the end of the year, it pretty much evens out.

I saw some pretty significant cash changing hands as a caddy.

One weekday I looped in a group with a totally different feel than your typical Thursday "customer golf."  It was quiet on the first tee, and got much quieter and much more serious as the round progressed.  One of the players (I wasn't on his bag) had a real bad temper and a real bad vanity handicap.  I knew that there was some serious cash at stake, but I knew when to keep my mouth shut so I did not ask.  Mr. Big Temper / Vanity Cap missed a putt on 18 that was very expensive.  Before my caddy partner picked up his bag from beside the green, the guy had made off with the sack himself and was stomping off towards the bag room and parking lot.  Next thing we see is him hammer-throwing his golf bag into the parking lot. :o :o  Bag crashed into the side of a big S-Class Merc, clubs popped out and did some nice damage to that car and at least one or two others.

I never did find out how much money was in play during that match.  Both me and the other caddy in the group were experienced enough and needed the job enough to keep our mouths shut and not ask around.  Not sure what happened to that member -- didn't see him at the club for a little while so I'm not sure if the Board suspended him or what.

I also worked a pro-am / fundraiser hosted by Dave Thomas of Wendy's fame.  Was in his group one year -- great guy, not a very good player, liked to gamble.  He had a big Prevost coach motorhome there in the parking lot.  Again, not sure exactly how much was in play, but it was enough that when we finished up, the four players took some time settling up.  Dave Thomas' caddy leaned over and told me that his player was cleaned out of what he had on him.  He had to go back to the bus to get more cash, settle up the bets, and tip the caddies.  He was very generous with us sack-slingers, and caddying in his group was a great time.

Twice I played my 2 buddies a few years back for $100 each they owed me some money from a previous bet and wanted to go double or nothing on the course. I was a 3 cap at the time and had to give them a shot a hole they were not good players but could still shoot low 40's on 9 if they got going so I still had to be on my a game to win.  First round I won pretty easy, a few months later we did it again and it came down to the 18th hole where I was able to snake in a 10 footer for birdie to win the match. They quit playing for money after that.

Playing TW on the Xbox was another story after the bars we would bet a couple hundred on a video game, always funny as hell 3 drunk guys paying a game for money. Lotta smack talking involved

Won: $1600 in a better ball match.  Brother called me to play two guys he knows and plays with at their home course.  They just kept pressing the bet right up until 18.....one of the kids fathers shelled out in the clubhouse.

Lost: I tend to suppress losses but probably $200 or so.

Witnessed: Saw a guy write a check in a Member-Guest for his own team in the Champ Flight Calcutta for $30,000.  Yes they ended up winning.  Yes I felt like the poorest guy in the room hearing the bids.

biggest game i have played in gamble wise is 50/100 pars and birdies. have done well in that but the only time that was being played i was in a good spot with my swing.

i have not gambled huge golf but i have done quite a bit of large sports betting and poker...occasionally the ponies as well. most everyone i know who has had huge score somewhere has a huge loss. it goes with the nature of the beast. if you have a high win of 100 and high loss of 15 you probably don't gamble much or are forgetting about a bad day somewhere.

best day on golf course +550 - worst -475

Have won several grand several times in various club matches calcutta's member guest etc... they are a different animal all together. when you have a putt in a play-off format and you know it is worth +4000 to make and plus +1400 to miss...it just isn't the same.

Played in a horse race last summer with a blind draw partner and we won-  split $870, so $435 is the most I've won, haven't lost more than $35 in a round.

We don't bet real big- it's mostly so we can talk s*** to one another.

Some of these side bets lists are pretty extensive.

I think I just figured out the slow play problem.

True story. Some players from another course came down when theirs was snow-covered. Got stuck behind them and their buddies in the next group ahead. Finally called it quits after 9.

$15 won - $5 lost - I keep it small when playing golf as most golfers aren't complete degenerates... However if we were talking short handed PLO games we would have to add  some 0's

I feel like golfers don't take wins and losses of money as well as most poker players because in golf you can't blame your shortcomings on luck as much as poker.  The ego is a funny thing...

My normal group usually ends up with payouts in the$10-20 range. One of the other groups it's usally in the single digits. But a couple of the other ones get a bit carried away. They usually have at least two or three presses going on each hole before a ball is even hit. Every hole usually ends up being worth $10-20. Too much for my liking. I had a shortish birdie putt with this group one day for a boatload of skins, to use one of my father in law's favorite quotes, I was "shaking like a dog sh**ing peach seeds"( I know, he has a way with words), trying to draw it back. And missed it badly. I usually try to avoid those couple groups.

I think the most I've won is right around a hundred and the most paid out about seventy.

Just a few bucks.

We'll do things like

.25 for longest drives (have to hit fairway)
.25 for first on green
.25 for closest to pin
1.25 for the hole.

Or some variation of similar small amounts.  Most times I end up fairly even for +/- a buck or two.  I try to play with the friends who have similar skill levels and as long as one of isn't having a great day we all win some and lose some.

Most I've ever won is 14k and biggest loss is 9k. This is in my once regular game between a buddy of mine versus a strip club owner and his wife. He and his wife scramble from the women's tee and play my partner's and my best ball from the tips, usually at Robert Trent Jones trail courses in  North Alabama. $1k-2k

Last weekend a buddy and I were playing and the course was empty, so he says, play for dinner and drinks?  Sure, what's the game?  Chip closest to the hole from here.  I beat him at that, then he wants to do a best of 5 putting contest, beat him at that too.  Dinner and drinks never tasted so good!!  Back fired on him!

My mistake, good story.

I just happened to notice mosty winners, perhaps the losers don't want to post but those would be good to hear.

Some people win at gambling. Wifes grandfather won lotto a few times, never big but 10k couple times and seemed to win at the tables a bit.

I never gambled on golf, that would be pretty stupid since I am not very good.

thought I was a BA when I was 16 played a 36 hole vegas match at 10 cents a tick. Won 250 between me and my partner. (I shot 69-67, he shot 70-67 ) easy to say we destroyed who we were playing. Took the others juniors almost over a year to pay back....just realized one of them still owes me twenty haha. Good times.

I make the same bet with my friend every year.  His handicap floats somewhere in the low teens.  I am not that talented.  If I beat him straight up, stroke play, on an 18 hole round, just one time through the course of the season, I win the bet.  It's been 4 years, I've never won.  This is the year, though...

I just lost two dollarbucks yesterday. Closest to the pin... and long drive. (My drive was longer, but I was in the rough). :unamused:

I played for money one time with friends. I was the low man at a few under, but my partner who is usually good for a solid 78 shot around 90. The guys we played shot around 77 a piece and they took $40 from me. Since then I've never played against friends for money.
