OK, just regripped my driver and like a dumbass I put it in a clamp and for some reason I put it too high on the shaft and I heard a crack as I tightened it.  Anyway, I can see a hairline crack in the side of the shaft but there isn't any crease that I can feel even by running a fingernail along it.  My question is this:  If I hit this thing is it gonna shatter in my hands or would you not be afraid to hit it.  I really can't believe I was dumb enough to do this... I've been working on clubs for 10 years and never have I don't something quite that dumb.  If it matters it's a Callaway RAZR Hawk with the Aldila RIP 60.  Thanks in advance for any replies.

I guess you could hit a few shots on the driving range and see how it goes.

I would reshaft it ASAP personally.

Odds are you did crack it.  There is a remote chance that you only split the paint, but it is remote (it can happen - I did it to my Fubuki near the head and it never creaked or broke afterward).  You won't know unless it breaks.  I just retired the club and moved on as I didn't think it was sellable and I didn't want to use it any more just in case.

It could break first shot (hope you wear kevlar) or never break.  Just not worth the risk.

It will break eventually and someone could get hurt. Reshaft ASAP

Hit it and see if it breaks.  Then on the range you can say wow, I guess my swing speed is getting up there.  People will respect and fear you all in one swing.

Tell them you are training for Long Drive.

On a serious note, you probably did crack it and that is not good.  I broke a Made for Cobra Redboard at the range one day. Right in half and the looks I got were priceless.

had a Burner with a slight hairline...couldn't feel it, i could just barely make out a scratch in the paint...  Blew that thing up on the 27th hole...Re-shaft it...  When mine broke the club head with the shatter stump went flying about 30ft...luckily no one was close...

I've gripped / regripped clubs since '85 and NEVER clamped any of them. I line the grip up in the playing position after sliding it on the shaft.

Different situation if you're using air though.
