hey guys, I am looking at some new clubs this year as I am playing some old beat up mp33's, I play every day and in the next few months its time for a new set, plus I cant wait to have a set built and get rid of all this lead tape on my irons. My question is I love to hit my mp33 1 iron off the tee. I play kind of a stinger shot and let it chase up the fairway, unless its a wet day than i pull it out of the bag and add a hybrid into its place. But I really like the control i get when i fire one low up the fairway with an iron.  My average drive with it is 245 yards and if i really NUT one i can get it out there 265ish. I see Tiger plays a vr_s 2 iron and am wondering what other clubs should l look at besides the VR_S forged? I like the idea of having a little more forgiveness on the driving iron because at high swing speeds if you just miss it a little it can take off 20+ yards and spin around.  

So I am just looking for some suggestions on other clubs to try. Thanks for any honest suggestions in advance.

Sound sweet to be able to hit a driving iron that hard.  Anyhow- people talk about using RBZ 3i or any other cavity and have it bent a little stronger; I would think you have to watch the offset in doing this.    I have not hit the new callaway x utility and Titleist is also making a U driving iron.   If you plan on staying with mizuno, give their mp fli-hi or h4 a hit.

I use the Mizuno mp flii hi pretty much like you do, a stinger shot. I find the hollow head and larger head provides some forgiveness without a big loss in feel.

However, the best DI I have ever hit was a Srixon ZR-UTI.
The balance, feel and precision were phenomenal. Truly.
But they cost over $200 - $289...

I just got my H4 2iron built with an NV105, I can't say enough good things about it so far. I can't wait to get this in play off the tee on a couple of holes at my course. The number on the LM have been impressive. it is very easy (as far as 2 irons go) to hit off the deck too. The look at address definitely isn't for everyone but for me it inspires a little confidence.

I used an X100-shafted forged Mizuno FliHi but changed to graphite and went 1 - 1.5" longer and delofted a 3i to 17*. It's a real hammer from the tee or off the deck or from the fairway.

If you really like your current iron heads, just get them reshafted and regripped and get the swing weight dialed in without the lead tape. If necessary, send to The Iron Factory to refurbish the heads to make like new again.

I picked up the RocketBladez 3 iron (non-tour) and put a C-Taper X-Flex in it.  I left the loft alone, but I've had it for a few weeks and so far it works awesome as a driving iron for me.

Used to use a TaylorMade Tour Preferred Prototype 18° 2u driving iron that I loved, felt great, looked better, was super long off the tee & off the deck. Replaced it with a Mizuno H4 as I just liked the look a little better... It's for sale by the way if you want it!

For a good ball striker, I still think the 503h makes a beautiful driving iron.

Honestly the s56 2 iron is a straight beast. I have one and have never used anything but putters from ping before. Put an x100 in it and its good for any fairway. Only carry it like 220 but it rolls out a good 245 everytime.

they all sound great, but which one has the most forgiveness as distance with it isn't as much of a problem. I do like bladed clubs since I learned on them and haven't played anything else in my life, so the look of the blade does matter at address (just a psychological thing) and with the perimeter weighting the vr_s forged was supposed to have great forgiveness. Those are the 2 biggest factors for me right now.  This club very rarely is hit to control distance at a green or anything, its just a safe low punch off the tee instead of my 3wood (906f2 love that club) which is 15-20 yards longer on average, but flies higher and in wind can spin  around a little to much.  So a clean look at address and forgiveness are my #1 and #2 factors in looking for a new iron.


I do like my mp33 1 iron very much, the problem is if i just miss the sweet spot a tiny bit it goes no where, but when you nut it its the best feeling thing in the world. so as much as i love that club its smarter all the way around to get something with some forgiveness since its a driving iron that I usually go at a little more than a controlled 3 iron being flighted at a green.

Mizuno MP Fli Hi is your man on this one, Doc. I've been trying one out myself lately and it's sits in the gap between the iron and hybrid quite nicely. I prefer the iron on normal summer days when the links course is firm, but winter makes the Mizuno is viable option off the tee and the fairway.

Good advice right there...thanks! I actually have an H4 4 iron and was thinking of picking up a 3 to fill that void. The guys from Mizuno told me that by all accounts the new H4 2/3/4 irons are essentially an updated Fli-hi. I tried out the Cally Prototype everyone's raving about, but it's simply not as user friendly as I had hoped.

It's a bladed club that Mark O'Meara used to win his two majors. If you like bladed clubs, fine - if you want forgiveness and help with ball flight, you should probably try something else.

i am only looking for forgiveness with the driving iron as i make a little harder of a swing at it compared to a controlling shot with a normal iron. that is why i said only looking for forgiveness in my driving iron.  i have zero problem with ball striking on a distance controlling shot, but this club is just a grip it and rip it that i only care about how straight it is.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Ping Eye 2 or Zing 2. At one time, they used to be standard fare in the bags of pros. Still a great driving iron option with forgiveness for even the hardest and longest of hitters. Sandy Lyle anyone?

There are a number of decent options that aren't too pricey. Such as Mizuno MP Fli-Hi, Mizuno H4, Bridgestone Air Muscles. But if money isn't that big of an issue, the Yonex Zero Iron was by far the best DI I've hit. Incredible feel, very forgiving, and a rocket of a club. But the club runs $300+.

Mizuno H4 2-iron is excellent.  More the look of an iron than a hybrid, and excellent off the tee.  I can't seem to hit the ball anywhere but straight and I'm always in play.

By "forgiveness," are you thinking something not compact but rather mid-sized or slightly bigger and a cavity back?  There are a fair number of clubs like this but are out of production (which means they're very affordable).  I'd suggest opting for something about +1" over standard one-iron length to help get a little more swing speed, height, and distance. Depending on your swing speed, consider 15-17* on loft.

I play a Ping Eye 2+ BeCu myself and it is pretty much my favorite club in the bag. Had the non-BeCu version for several years and it is just as good, maybe a little less soft. Decent workability. They launch at least mid-high in my experience but that might be because of the shaft or my swing. It's a solid buy if you can find one, I can't imagine you being dissapointed. For reference, I play the 690MB's 3-PW and I'm not entirely sure I would go for a bladed 1 iron even if I could find one. Not that I'm not looking though. =)

Speaking of Titleist, you could always try to get ahold of a 2 iron in the 670 or 680 MB range and bend it a couple of degrees. Or, as suggested before, sit tight for the 712U. That thing looks sweet.

I just checked out the Yonex Zero online and man that is a gorgeous club. I'd like to hear more about the forgiveness? Any comparisons to the H4?

fourteen makes the best driving irons imho. Hi-550 and hi-660 are still pretty great. Of course you could get the brand new x utility by callaway that els used in the open.

Given the history of it's designer, I'll bet it's pretty forgiving, and they offer it in 17* as a standard option. Shoot, now I want one too!

Will have to put in a vote to try the new X Utility from Cally.  Hit it today and loved the feel, have an 18* with PX 7.0 in it on the way.

Can't imagine anything would look cooler in your bag than the mp33 1 iron you already have. I bet that's fun to play around with too. Sorry I can't help but now I wanna buy a 33 1 iron lol
