My cousin and I are going to the Masters this year.  We are likely going to be down there beginning the practice rounds and a few days after the Masters finishes up.  I've begun looking at courses in the general vacinity and have found all courses jack their rates up within a 2 hour radius.  Hence my question as follows:
We will have tickets to see two days of play and have a free place to stay in Augusta.  We are trying to find where to fly into, rent a car, and possibly play some decent golf without the big up charge.  Has anyone ever found enough decent golf in Athens, GA?  Is Athens subject to the Masters Week rates?  Are there any other locations with a concentration of decent/good golf within a 4-6 hour radius (stay at holiday inn and play 2-3 days)?  The only other places I could come up with were Myrtle, HHI, Kiawah (which we played last year), and Pinehurst (played year before last).  Kiawah and Pinehurst are likely out of question, as we like playing new areas each year.  Any input on Athens Golf and alternate locations would be very helpful.  Note I know Athens will be no comparison to the above mentioned locations, but the area doesn't have to be spectacular like those mentioned above.  Ideally, I would have loved to do Reynolds Plantation, but that's just out of our price range.  Thanks!

There is decent golf in Athens, but I don't know about their rates during Masters week - check out the Georgia Club and Jennings Mill.  You could fly into Atlanta and it wouldn't take you too long to get to Athens.  And Athens to Augusta would be an hour to 90 minutes depending on where exactly you stay in Athens.
