Good for him (insert sarcasm now). I think it's kinda ridiculous that because you are a celebrity-athlete, you get all these perks like signing with a golf company because you happen to enjoy playing the sport. Will Ping benefit from Michael Phelps having a Ping bag when he plays in random Pro-Ams? Probably not, in my opinion. I can understand former athletes who play golf recreationally, ie. Michael Jordan, Jerry Rice, who probably get free clubs from their long -time sponsor, NIKE. I highly doubt they are getting paid to PLAY Nike clubs. I'd love to see what this Ping deal involves for Phelps. Hey Ping, my HC is a million times better than Michael Phelps...how 'bout you pay me to play Ping when I play for fun on the weekends
This post reads bitter.

Also how is it ridiculous? It's part of marketing. Visibility is never a bad thing. It couldn't possibly be bad.

I understand the marketing aspect of it. I just think it's silly since Phelps isn't making a living playing golf. Why does he need an equipment sponsor?

It isn't about the person so much as it is about the presence. I see a lot of tour players playing XXX club. I don't drool over the person hitting them, I drool over how beautiful their clubs are and this will be no different. I am not a huge PING fan, but those look fantastic.

Funny story about the Nike clubs and long time sponsors.
Half of those guys pay for clubs. They order them from the employee store and go over to a local pro shop to get fitted. Good friend of mine has a pretty cool collection of signed stuff from pro athletes.
I thought the Phelps equipment deal was a joke. Something that drives me nuts is why do all these celebs get free stuff? They've got the money to pay for it, give it to some kid who needs it. Why not take the money that they spent on Phelps and give that amount worth of clubs and balls to the 1st tee?
