Forgot all about this thread until today when my son asked if we could play some golf.  None of the courses are open yet in my area but I got an email for a spring break golf camp.  I asked if he wanted to do Taekwondo camp or golf camp during spring break and he immediately answered, "GOLF CAMP!".  The whole thing made me think of this thread and I just read through the past 5 or 6 pages.  Great stuff.  One of my favorite threads on this site.

My son is 10 years old and 5 years in training for Taekwondo.  He's taking his black belt test in September.  Possibly in June but it is a really hard test so I may make him wait and train all summer since he will be too busy in the spring with baseball to do the extra training.

As for golf, he is doing the spring break golf camp and then two golf camps during the summer, which was his choice (love that he loves it).  I need to figure out his club situation though since he has been using the 5-9 yr old set the past 4 years and now he is 10 and grew almost 4 inches in the past 12 months.

Any advice on clubs that aren't extremely expensive?  Maybe in the $200 range?

This is great. I think golf is a great game for kids. Teaches them to concetrate and patience. Also to learn how to deal with defeat. I started both of my boys of this winter (5 & 6) hitting balls at the driving range. My older boy has taken more of an interest to it than the younger one. LOL, I don't think the younger one has the patience for it. But everytime I grab the clubs to head out the door he is trying to follow me out begging me to let him come. He doesn't take it too well when I tell him not this time. I plan on taking him to a par 3 course in the next couple of weeks for his first round at a course. Any advice?

I'm walking my little peanut to kindergarten on Monday.   As we're walking I inform him that I'm going to go to see if the golf course is open (I was actually playing my first round of the year with a friend, but he didn't need to know this).   He promptly looks at me and states . . . "Daddy, if the golf course is open you need to call Mommy so she can take me out of school.  We can join you."    It's possible to get them 'hooked' if they are having fun.  Golf is a game of wonder.

Thank you for your encouragement Kadin.

So we finally received some nice weather from the golf gods and Julia and I took advantage.  She was a little rusty with her putting pace but that's to be expected.  :) Dad is a little rusty too ;)

We found ourselves stuck behind two very very slow players and Julia's solution to slow play was to lay down in the cart and color the score sheet.  Maybe we should all get coloring books for such times.   :)

All in all a great day...
Here are a few shots of the action.

Julia has moved on in karate and recently tested for her blue belt where she had to fight two girls at one time.  They did not go easy on her. In the end she did great and passed. She is now at the halfway point to being a black belt.

Kadin has joined Jjulia in the karate ranks and they both compete in tournaments.   Julia has placed in every single tournament and has qualified for nationals in June.  Kadin won his first 5 fights and is getting ready to test for his first belt.

So I bring up the karate because I wanted to share something with you.  If you have read my articles you know  that I push the "fun" factor and that's what it takes to keep kids interested in golf and other activities.

Well I have noticed something...Julia has changed not so much with golf but with karate.  Ever since she started competing in tournaments it went from going to karate because it was fun...to...Dad can we go to karate so I can spar and master my kata.  It's still fun for her but now the objective of "winning" in competition has sparked her competitive side without me having to push her.

I am sure this will happen with golf when the time comes to start competing.

Here are a few more shots of how hard she truly works at this.  It has now become "deliberate practice"

Julia's karate certainly doesn't look rusty. :-)

I like the idea of coloring books in carts...maybe Julia could write a letter to Golf Digest suggesting just that. :-)

Quick up date:

Julia and Kadin competed at the AAU Nationals and Junior Olympics.

Julia went undefeated in the black belt division fighting up with the 10 year olds (she's 8) she brought home gold in Kumite and team Kumite (fighting) and is now a two time national champion. This was Kadin's first national event and he brought home bronze at nationals and gold at the Junior Olympics.

This past Saturday Julia received a letter in the mail from the AAU National Headquarters. She has been selected to the United States International Team and will represent the US in the Honolulu International Karate-Do ChampiOnships in Hawaii this coming November.

Beyond proud of these two little club building warriors.

Julia will be building her first set of clubs (on her own) later this month..pics to follow

Thanks guys. I will deff post pics of the build. I'm so crazy busy between baseball, softball, karate and building clubs for clients it's difficult to post like I once did.

Know this though.  I lurk just about everyday :)

I miss my WRX buddies.
