Looking to buy and new or used set of irons this season. Want to go forged for this set, but would like something that will help me improve right now and not something "above my head" that I have to get quite a bit better to appreciate, if you know what I'm saying. Any suggestions? Any other mid-handicappers that have bought a new set of irons that have helped them out right away?

Thanks guys

I will probably catch flak for suggesting anything JDM, but seriously, check out the 2011 or 2013 OnOff Forged.  S20C Endo forged, with tungsten sole plates from the 7i down.  Slightly larger head, forgiving sole grind, absolutely gorgeous, and rumored to be one of the softest feeling irons anywhere.  I have a set of 2013s that should be here next week, but I have seen many people say the 2011s were some other easiest to play but still playeresque type irons out there.  They also have a killer milled face on them.  And they aren't godawful expensive.  (1100 shipped range for 5-PW with nippon shafts, can be had for ~1000 on rakuten)

I personally have not.  Have heard positive reviews from people I trust however.  Also can checkout rinkya.com as well which is a proxy for buying off yahoo japan.

I found that the overall cost was close enough to just go with TSG knowing the service and support would be top notch.  For the technology, forgiveness, price, feel and looks, I think this iron is going to be tough to beat!

I used to bag a set of Titleist 775·CB irons which I keep in my backup bag because they are rock solid but my winter bag contains Mizuno MX·25 irons which are also forgiving and solid. The Titleist irons can be had for less than $200 in decent to better shape while a solid set of the Mizuno irons might cost upwards of $300. Good luck with your search and decision.

  • Miura Passing Point. Very easy to hit and superb feel.
  • Tour Exotics CB. Solid clubs - great value for the price.
  • Bridgestone Dual Pockets. They play a lot more forgiving than they look...

Thanks guys, out of the suggested ones, which would be more towards the game improver and which would be more towards a players club?
Also besides here and ebay, where are the best places to find decent used golf equipment?
Thanks again

Pretty much all of the clubs listed are game improvement as you requested the best forged iron for a mid range handicap player. Someone mentioned the Titleist AP2 which is a forged players club but how good of an iron player are you?

While I've bought clubs from here and ebay, I'd say that the best place to by them is wherever you can actually hit them before you purchase them (2nd Swing, Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy, etc.).

Thanks llamont. I would say that my iron play is not the best part of my game, and I really want to work on it this season, so definately game improver is more what I am looking for.

Pretty much all of the irons others have listed except for the Callaway Diablo Forged and the Nike VRS Forged are players irons with some forgiveness built in. The Callaway and Nikes are true game improvement irons. I played the Diablo Forged for two years and currently play the VRS Forged. You will not go wrong with either but I would give the VRS Forged a slight edge. It is slightly more forgiving on off center hits, has a softer forged feel, and better for chipping around the green. But not everyone has a $1000 for the VRS Forged and good used set of Diablo Forged can be had for a lot less.

Srixon 701's, non-tour.  Out of date, but very nice and cheap. Those Onoff are very pretty, as JDM tends to be, depends on your price point.

Have the a4 as my back-up set of irons. These irons are phenomenal and if you can find a set by all means, pick them up. The a4s have a near cult standing here on Wrx. Many of the other recommendations on this thread are worthy of taking a look. You can't go wrong with the Mizzy MX series (25, 200, 300) and give the component offerings a fair shake.
Good luck in your search.

Onoffs are really good as morebeerbettergolf mentioned. They are hard to find, but if you get the chance to hit them, they feel really soft and seem pretty forgiving. Onoffs are a bit pricy, but not that much more expensive than Titleist AP2s, which are another great set.
