Tipping a FW 3" isn't that big of a deal, especially if it's x100.  I played a FW tipped 2" with X100 and found it very whippy, plus spun too much.  Tipped it another .75" and voila!  I'm guessing the headweight on the xhot is in the 212gm range.  IIRC, something like every extra 10gms of headweight needed an extra 1" of tipping to play true to flex...

God Bless
Jer

I was going to post this exact same thing!  Standard tipping for a DG x100 is 2 inches for a 3 wood.  With all the weight he has on that club head 3 inches would seem about right.  Of course this is nothing against Woodland, he's still a beast!  He's the man for all us former college hoop players that now play golf!!

So the 3 wood is too long, why not bag a 4 or 5 wood instead of all that work?

my thoughts too.....as a matter of comparison, Bubba bags a 16.5* 4-wood .....with no other fairway woods or hybrids

Ball flight maybe? It with a 4/5 you would see higher trajectories and maybe thats not what GW wants. Just a haunch.

The pictures already show a 17 deg FW, so I assume even that is going too far for his yardage gaps. I thought he used to play a 13.5 deg Titleist though.

Also, we don't know if it is a true 17, or if it's bent open and has an effective loft closer like 15 or so. There's a discussion earlier in the thread that Bubba's 4W is cranked open to play 15 degs.

A little off topic here, but it always boils my water when I see something like that 18U.  A club that was nearly impossible to get when it was in the tour authentic line.  Now it IS impossible to get other than the very rare Ebay listing.

Why couldn't Callaway keep an ongoing Tour Authentic line up?  They wouldn't have to keep much stock and they could charge outrageous prices if they want.  People would STILL buy the old utility club, the old C grind wedges with conforming grooves, the 2007 x forged iron with conforming grooves, etc.  Argh!!!!!!!

Yea they aren't charging outrageous pricing though... the re-sellers are which is the issue.  If they re-issued these I bet about 10% of their accounts would buy them and if the prices went up it would be even less.... A club like that is a niche product and is perfectly served in the limited market.  You know how many calls I have gotten for the new Callaway Utility Iron?  0.  Multiple calls for G25 hybrid demos, TM Stage 2 Demos and a couple calls for the new Callaway X-Hot line but that club is and will always be a niche club.  Same with the 712u or Mizuno Fli-Hi etc... just the nature of those style clubs.
Totally agree with you here.  I was thinking more along the lines of Cally ONLY selling them through their website.  Or by special order through a shop.  They would probably only sell a couple hundred per year, but it would be a NICE touch for Cally loyalists.  If they would let me order the '07 X Forged with CC groves, they could charge me $1200 and I'd be willing to wait a month to get them!!

Just saw this article on GW's 17 deg FW. It is bent open to play 15 deg according to them:

Woodland felt his new X Hot Pro 17-degree fairway wood (bent open to 15 degrees) -- a club he was hitting 294 yards into the wind -- was too long for his liking. Tekyl and Woodland discussed a number of options before settling on an X-100 steel shaft.

Using one of Chad's pics no doubt, haha.

Woodland is a beast.  No way he sticks with the steel shafted X Hot Pro all season though.

So what do you think he will end up with?

I'm thinking a proto Matrix 10M3 would work, just an X though tipped an inch and a half so it retains some feel :)

I'm thinking the same thing. GD made him a Proto driver shaft in 90+g. They'll probably make him something heavier to try too.  Or many other companies. A 10m3 sounds good to me.  A RIP'D NV 105, VTS black 10, Ahina 100 or a CTaper wood shaft would be really cool too.

Exactly Robo, nobody in their right mind would use steel in a driver! :)

Or would they?

Blown way out of proportion here, and by Callaway.

Yes the new FW is very hot but when it comes to shafts especially for fairway woods there are heavier and stiffer options is Graphite then in steel.

Just stumbled across this....Gary has only hit one drive this season for the radar stats, so here are the numbers for that particular thump:

SS - 123.40
bs - 182.40
Smash - 1.478
La - 8.77
Spin - 2542
hang time - 6.6s
carry -279.1

Not too shabby!

Punching those numbers into flightscope's trajectory optimizer yields these results;

If they would set up a long driving competition between the brands Callaway would have a strong team in Woodland, Holmes and Quiros. :D Wouldnt that be a very amusing thing, and a great opportunity to promote the brands!

I guess their boy Luke List hits it past them all!

Not a tour player, but don't forget Jamie Sadlowski

And this is why he's playing the original Callaway TA utility iron and not the new X-Utility.

Harry Arnett@Callaway_HarryA

@Puppetmaster76 he said it was close to what he had before and he likes the way it goes through the turf. Immediate switch rather than fit

Soles on those TA look more narrow, almost like the new 712u, vs the wide cally x utlity or fli hi

Better turf interaction?

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Gary Woodland switched from a Callaway X Hot Pro driver to a RAZR Fit Xtreme following the Humana Challenge — he felt the X Hot Pro was spinning a little too much for his liking — and promptly finished T27 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

While Woodland was pleased with the new driver's performance, he made one slight change to his current setup on Tuesday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Testing out his 9.5-degree (set to 9.1 degrees) against an 8.5-degree (set to 8.7), Woodland noticed the 8.5 was going about 10 yards further than his current setup. Not one to pass on additional yards off the tee, Woodland decided to put the 8.5-degree in play at TPC Scottsdale.
