I know there are heaps but one that sticks in my mind was Faldo the anouncer once saying pros have to show more personality and make themselves more acessable to the media. That comment couldnt have been further away from the attitude of Faldo the player. I never liked Faldo as a player and like him less as a commentator.

Have you seen his wife?  If he was, I'd join him if that's how you get one that looks like that. :cheesy:

Announcer's being hypocritical is a given.  Sort of like how drunks suddenly become nuclear physicists.

You don't believe in the comment, because its hypocritical from man that played in an era decades ago, when golf was less popular from a player from europe. His statment was directed to todays players, an opinion that he shared based on todays game, something that he is paid to do. I wouldn't get worked up over it- there are far worse announcers with less credentials when announcing golf.

I cut Johnny slack because on a good day (not even his best day, mind you)

He could kick the crap out of anybody

That said

Given page 45 of the last GM

He could stand to eat a few less doughnuts

Ohhh!

Yes Faldo was never charming or accessible as a top player. He has said that he owes his success e.g. 6 majors due to his ability to concentrate under pressure even if that means being stoic to everyone else even his playing partners.

But he has said that maybe he should have shown more emotions and less serious during his playing days.

So maybe it is not really hypocritical but learning from your "mistake".

Actually, this isn't hypocritical.  If Elton Johns chin claimed it VJ hit too many balls, that would qualify.
OR if Elton John claimed he "would never yell for an athlete to get in the hole" that would also be hypocritical.

Johnny 63 rules.
But if you had said, "Anything Johnny Miller says about putting," I'm pretty sure we'd all be on board with that.

Miller is the author of my favorite quote about putting.  When Tiger's putting was at it's worst, whoever was working  the booth with Johnny asked him why he thought Tiger was having such trouble with his putting.  Johnny's reply:

"He's putting badly because he's not happy with his life.  Miserable people don't putt well."

Not sure about JM's insight into Tiger's psyche, but whenever I'm having a bad day on the greens I mutter this to myself, chuckle, and try to be a happier person.

Any time Kelly T. from Golf Channel criticises a golfer for saying something stupid (Sabbatini is top of mind) she is being hypocritical because she did the same thing talking about lynching Woods in a back alley.

When you put that into the context that it was used in, that was no where near as bad as the media made that one out to be.  If a normal, non-media type person had made the same comment, there would not have been near the backlash from it.  I have hear more than a few people use the term "lynch mob" and never thought twice about it.  Kind of the same as saying "burned at the stake".  That was more a firestorm generated by the media than anything.

I agree with you.  However, she has had no problem commenting about others' faux pas.  She needs to steer clear of making comments about others' verbal mis steps since she was guilty of the same thing.  By the way, her interview ambush of Matt Every last year, while not hypocritical, was unprofessional.

I willfully admit I don't pay too much attention to her, but I agree with you.  And I did not see the interview.  But normally when folks start rambling about another I usually just kind of space out, and it's kind of involuntary.  When they leave the "news", I just kind of stop paying attention until they move on.  The gossip gets annoying....

there are very few current announcers who can get away with second-guessing a player's shot before and specially after execution---particularly in the majors..

in fact i can only think of johnny miller of the bat----not counting guest announcers of course..

oh..and nick faldo....and maybe peter aliss..

I don't think JM hates anyone. But he wears his heart on his sleeve. Like many, he was disappointed by Tiger and when asked for an opinion on him, doesn't pull any punches, whether offering criticism or praise, in answer to the question..

I agree a little there.  He does a whole lot of "me vs x" a lot of times, and usually when he's being critical of someone.  "Oh, that was a terrible shot choice, I would have....".  He has his opinions, and that's fine like anyone else, but he does a lot of ego-stroking as well.

Same could be said of many, because some feel like that is what it takes to be a champion(that little god-like belief in yourself and abilities).  But it's one thing to have that belief and speak about it of yourself, but to use it while being critical of someone else at the same time is a little over the top.

That's completely exaggerated. Of course he thinks Tiger could hold a candle to him.
