I have been playing golf for about 20yrs now and this year I broke par for the first time this summer, and then did it again three rounds later. I generally play to about a 7-8 hdcp and my previous best was a 1 over 73. The 73 i completely choked coming in. I was 2 under through 15 and already thinking about breaking par for the first time and promptly bogeyed 16, 17 and 18.
My first round under par was a 1 under 71 which included my messing up on 18. I was 2 under through 17 and heading to 18 which has OB on left and wasteland plus OB on right. So i stripe it right down the middle and now I'm thinking lets break 70. Needless to say, I hit a wedge fat, come up short of the green and then chip it 15ft past the hole. Now I have a straight downhill putt which I hit 4ft past the hole. First thought was great i am going to double the last and shoot even. Luckily I made the putt and got a bogey. It was still a great day.
Now three rounds later, I am playing steady but draining everything. I hit it down the middle on on 16 and the pin is all the way back left. I hit a solid iron but pulled it a little and just missed the green left and shortside myself. I get lucky and chip in and now I am 2 under with two easy par 5's left. On 17, I hit a poor wedge for my 3rd which just gets on the front and able to two putt for par. So I am still 2 under with one to play and thinking if I can just make birdie, i will break 70. I promptly hit my drive right and under the trees. Luckily I am able to punch out and have about 80yds left to the pin which is about middle of the green on the left side. I hit a gap wedge a little bit left but exactly pin high about 12 ft away. I don't know that i have ever been more nervous over a putt, but all I thought was I may never have this chance again so put a good stroke on it. I got lucky and it went it for a 69.
I would consider myself a less than average putter and over the last 6 yrs, I average just over 33 putts per round. This summer I read the book putting out of your mind and had an amazing run of scores and dropped my hdcp to 4.2. When I shot 69, I had a total of 23 putts, 10 under my average and I one putted 11 greens.
Unfortunately my HDCP has slowly risen back to 7.0 but it was a great run. During that stretch I shot 78, 83, 76, 71, 75, 82, 69, 76, 77, 77, 80, 73. Since I live in Michigan, I now have to wait until the snow melts to get out again.
