Just started Weight Watchers on Monday and I have already lost 5 pounds.  Its a lot of work at first, but I think it will get easier as time goes by.

Blake I wished you lived closer to me I could use a workout buddy. Best of luck to you on your new lifestyle. I was really amazed at how much better I felt mentaly once I started my physical therapy from my hip surgery. Because I was so bad off for the last 3 years I basically became a lazy sack of sh!t. Feels real good to to be active again.

I gained 30+ pounds in my first year out of college mostly due to poor diet and a desk job that had me sitting 8.5 hours a day.  I have since lost that and then some and continue to maintain a healthy weight for my height.

Lots of good advice already posted and I will share what helped me:

Whole grains only (e.g. wheat instead of white bread)
Drink Water! It boosts metabolism and aids in digestion. First thing I do every morning is drink a glass of water.
Lots of fiber - it gives you the full feeling and it keeps things moving
Primarily Lean Proteins (chicken, fish, turkey)
Limited red meat intake - this one hurt the most!
Fruits and Veggies for snacks instead of "snack" foods
Avoid processed food at all costs
Excercise 30 min a day, though in my experience proper diet shed the weight much faster than excercise.

Update on this.

I have joined Weight Watchers and have been on their program for a week now.  I try to stay under the daily points allowed. I feel like they are way to high for me (68 points allowed per day)  I have lost 7 pounds so far and am excited to start seeing some changes.

Watch this Food Revolution video,

This changed the way I eat, I'm never hungry, and I continue to lose weight. It basically talks about how the food pyramid is garbage, how refined carbs and sugar are terrible, how all calories are not created equal, how there is no correlation between saturated fat and cholesterol levels, and shows what eating refined carbs does to your blood sugar levels.

All I eat now is meat, fish, high fat cheese, butter, high fat cream, vegetables, and eggs. High fat low carb. http://www.dietdoctor.com/

You're definitely on the right path in cutting out the processed, non food things, but be careful with all the animal based stuff in your diet.  With the exception of the veggies you mentioned, everything is animal based.  Plus you have no fruit.  Look up The China Study and you'll find a high correlation between large amounts of animal protein and disease.  Have you had your blood tested recently, specifically cholesterol?  When I cut out a big chunk (not all) of the animal based foods in my diet and ate more fruit and veggies, my cholesterol dropped 60 points in less than 3 months.  It's great you're losing weight, but that shouldn't be the only goal.  Remember weight loss doesn't always equal good health.  Plenty of skinny guys have heart attacks.

Nice work Blake!  I haven't had a ciggerette in almost 2 weeks, haven't been drinking sodas and limited my portions and I'm down 5 but can't really notice it haha. Gonna start up at the gym after the outing

This is gonna sound ridiculous but a friend of mine cut out bread, potatoes and sugared drinks and lost 30 lbs in a little under 3 months.  It wasn't like he ate nothing but bread, potatoes and Coca-Cola before either - just eliminated those things and the weight fell off of him.

Good luck,
