Seriously?*

There are so many threads about which player is going to game a particular OEM in the coming year. Hundreds of posts per thread (which may answer my question), but are the people posting in those threads equipment/company dudes or just average Joes?

I am sorry, but I look at these threads and say to myself, "So what?" I truly don't understand why anyone would care. Sporting "fandom" apparently eludes me.

I am not going to go out and retool my whole set based on what some Tour player has in his/her bag. I know what I like, I know what I need, and no amount of advertising is going to change my mind or make me buy the "latest and greatest."

I guess I am the only one??

Why do you think advertising even exists?

Because it works

I do, but not in the way that you're asking, I think.

I love to hear about how they use what they're playing, and what exactly it is they're using to be the best players in the world.

Whether a guy plays Callaway, Titleist or Ping is only footnoteworthy, at best.  What they wear for apparel is of absolutely zero consequence, but..on the other hand it's a slow time of year, and it's tour talk and all.

But yeah, it's getting a little creepy and unhealthy if you ask me.  I'm not easily swayed by fake smiling walking billboards.

Nope not at all...I could care less who is playing what equipment. I also could care less about advertisments (I do love when they are funny). I am a try it and buy it kind of guy always have been always will be. I am curious however when a player switches equipment that he/she has been playing for a long time to something else, but not enough for me to say.."oh man they switched maybe I should too".

Not always true, especially among mid level players. The difference between top dollar and low dollar is one good event for the middle level guys.  I know multiple players who took less money to play what they want and thought they'd play better with.  Webb Simpson is perfect example.  He took 1/5 of the money another company offered to stick with Titleist.  While many times the guaranteed money is the biggest factor, many of these guys have plenty of money and they truly want what will make them play better.  If the lose their card that contract becomes worthless anyways.

Advertising works on everyone. But not in the "Oh, X is playing those irons, therefore, I will play them" mentality. We aren't 9 year olds. But it works on a much broader scale. I am obviously not directly influenced in my choice of clubs by tour players and what they are paid to play. But, i think more people would be willing to give the maltby wedges or irons a chance IF they were advertised and played on tour. Let's face it, if you have a bag full of OEM clubs you were influenced by the various marketing approaches these guys take. You can counter "well no, i went and hit 5 drivers before deciding what to buy" thats probably true by the advertising and tour presence makes those clubs available for you to hit in the first place.

There are 2 different questions being asked. Do you play what pro's play because they play them? And,  Does advertising effect your buying of golf equipment? You can be totally honest answering "No, Yes". But anyone who answers "NO, NO" is fooling themselves and is an advertisers dream. There is no more of a "marketable to" person than one who fails to recognize when it's happening.

There are certain OEM fanboys that are obsessed with it.  Doubly so when a player leaves their flock.  Some of them act like the player impregnated their daughter and shot their dog.

I think a lot of that went away when Tiger switched to Nike because too many people refuse to play the swoosh.  It'll be interesting to see what happens with McIlroy

Some of it works in reverse...... 'I like player X because he plays the same make as I do' aka purchasing vailidation.
Advertising certainly works.... why otherwise would TM be so successful?

For me personally I play Epon Irons & driver, RC woods and wedges and have a Scotty C as a putter. Apart from the putter none of the rest of my bag has Tour validation/endorsement.

Having said that I always liked Rory as a Titleist player.......

I agree. Because golf is not team oriented the brands become the teams some root for while watching. All teams are basically just brands with identities. Golf brands sort of feel like teams. It seems for sports that are individual focused the major sponsor becomes the team to sell gear the same way an NBA/NFL team wants to sell gear.

I care what the pros play because I find it interesting, much like a NASCAR fan might find the cars they drive interesting.  Does it influence what I buy for MY game....not really.  My game is nothing like the pros play, so I usually assume if it works for them it WON'T work for me.  I will look at wedges and putters, but the shafts and many of the heads they use are not going to help me improve.

For some of us getting hit with snow up north it's the closest thing to golf we have right now.  It's like watching to see what happens at the trade deadline.

I agree. Because golf is not team oriented the brands become the teams some root for while watching. All teams are basically just brands with identities. Golf brands sort of feel like teams. It seems for sports that are individual focused the major sponsor becomes the team to sell gear the same way an NBA/NFL team wants to sell gear.
MJ and Bulls gear
Kobe and Lakers gear
Tiger and Nike gear
Lance Armstrong and Nike gear
Eric Kosten and Girl Brand gear

I'm surprised more golf brands haven't started making their players wear matching jerseys like TM did last year.

What about Hello Kitty??

Hello Kitty on a hat would be awesome in a :to_become_senile: sort of way.

I could not care less. I couldn't play the clubs pros use, and their clothes won't fit me the way it does them.
I'll buy whatever appeals to me.

I enjoy hearing about new products, but I don't want to hear who's playing it on tour.

I care and I am influenced but what the pros play. Not like I say  - Tiger plays nike, so I will too. But I play mainly Titleist gear, as when I started to play Tity do a good job of making me think "better players" use their gear. I always thought - if I ever get to be good enough I want to play those clubs. I have hit them against other irons, and picked Titleist, but I always wanted to like them. Same token though I like vokey wedges as a brand, but I play callaway wedges. The Vokey just were not good enough fit for my wedge game as much as wanted to like them.

I'm not buying it Mad.
If you REALLY didn't care you wouldn't have bothered to create a thread about it.
It's ok, you can come out of the closet now ;)
It's ok to have a Tim Rosaforte RSS feed and follow him on Twitter, really it is.

No, but it is the closest thing to golf right now. It's like draft day.
