Reading your lists takes me back to being a kid and playing RBI Baseball, Tecmo Bowl, and Bulls vs. Lakers. Those were the days. Each game had player who was unstoppable and looking back the programmers must have been on to something (RBI riddled with guys who will be remembered for roids claims and asterisks).
Bo Jackson, Ronnie Lott, Mark McGwire, Ryan and Clemens, and of course Michael Jordan.

a lot of those guys in RBI were before the time they took roids. well, canseco was probably always on roids, but i dont think clemens or mcguire were until later. that was a fun game, though. i played it when i was a kid, then found it again online while i was in grad school during boring classes.

The only sport I compare with being close in... Endurance, strength, balance, precision, focus, physical is rugby.

Is hockey hard? "I don't know, you tell me. We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us, oh yeah did I mention that this whole time we're standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick? Is ice hockey hard? I don't know, you tell me. Next question."

the only reason i didn't include that one is because it didn't get a ton of pre-draft hype...as they went 2-3 and Hakeem....no wait, Akeem went first.

Also, people were high on Jordan but not as high by comparison to Leaf/Manning. Both guys were expected to be longtime franchise QB's. Jordan was seen as a very athletic 2 guard with a high ceiling.

Another true story apparently, was Bob Knight after coaching Jordan on team USA, called his friend who worked for Portland (may have been the GM i forget) and told him "Take Jordan"...to which the guy responded "we need a center Bob"....and then Knight said "So play him at center!!!"

LOL....but yeah funny that Portland messed up so badly on both Durant and Jordan

The Durant thing I totally get that Portland screwed that up. I thought Oden was over rated in college. I can't fault them on Bouie though. Back then centers were often considered the most important position and Bouie looked really good in college. Plus, Portland had an up and coming 2 guard in Drexler already and no one knew about Bouie's leg issues.

Football... Play for 3-6 seconds then get a 30 second rest. Lots of teammates on the field to defend your mistake. Except running backs, I don't see the need to only have 1 game per week.

Basketball... Smallest playing surface in the major sports. A lot of standing around whole plays are being setup. Very little back check on fast breaks. Zero physical play allowed.

Soccer- endurance is off the charts. No physical play so strength is unneeded.

Hockey... Most good teams roll 2 lines and mix in the other 2 when they see fit so endurance is a must have. It is the fastest game on earth period. 5 guys on the opposing team trying to light you up every chance they get, and you need to be able to shell out as well, strength is a necessity. Balance is self explanatory. Just ask anyone who is stepping on the ice for the first time how easy it is to stand let alone skate. Put all those together when you have the puck... You need to be able to stickhandle with precision keeping your head up (basically controlling the puck blind) so you can avoid body checks while keeping your balance and you need to be mentally prepared to be a move ahead of your opponent. Not to mention hockey is the only sport you are encouraged to fight to gain a swing in momentum.

Hockey is one of the least watched sports on tv right now because Gary Bettman is a MORON. That is why it isn't in high demand and why the players don't get paid more. But athletes are overpaid as it is so NHL is closer to reality

read this

http://sports.espn.g...=simmons/020712

In "the book of basketball" Simmons literally transcribes the entire commentary line by line of the Bowie pick from draft night 1984. In retrospect it sounds so horribly doomed it's almost comical.

Anyway not trying to call you out or anything i just love the NBA and have read about it more then any sane person should

i think Hockey struggles because only Canadians, Russians, Scandinavians and Northern Americans really care about it.

I mean if you live in Minnesota or Michigan i get it. But Hockey might aswell be cricket to people living in Huntsville or Oklahoma City.

I'm detecting a bias towards Hockey here!

I'm like Jeff, never played hockey so I can't compare it to any others. I do think people are underestimating football, especially for the big hosses on the line. When you're straining against another big body just as big and strong as yourself it is incredibly draining, and you don't recover from that by the next snap. They do however get series off for offense/defense.

I do believe the best "athletes" are the NBA guys. Guys like Lebron are just physical specimens.

But from what little I've seen (and really reaching out here on the team sports), the guys who play water polo are the real studs. They beat the sprint, beat the hell out of each other, and do it while swimming/treading the entire time. I swim like a rock, so what they do amazes me even more.

Wow. This must be a young crowd. I saw Butkus' name mentioned, but no Lambert, Hamm, Greene, Tatum?
And the worst transgression - the running back discussion starts and stops with Jim Brown.  And no mention of OJ (on the field OJ)?

Man, that's tough ... Especially for a Detroit guy. With that said,  I'd have to go Bowman. His run with the Wings was insane.

1. Jim Brown. Always.
2. Walter Payton

After those two the RB debate gets much tougher, IMO!

I think the OP exclued Jordan. He's a given.

While I really liked Stockton and Malone, anyone who would take them over Magic and Bird is delusional. While they were great players, they didn't approach the skill set Magic and Bird had.  Take McHale and Worthy, both extremely good players, but pairing them with Bird and Magic, both will likely be in the HOF (if they aren't already, not sure on that). Magic and Bird made everyone around them that much better.

And for running backs, save for one year, I think Walter's Bears were just about as bad as Barry's Lions (but you couldn't go wrong with wither choice). And man, was Jack Lembert a mean SOB, that was a great defense.

Watch him play he may not have the stats of other greats but he has wr speed at te and is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league. Most of what he does goes unrecognized. He is a pure athletic freak.

Not sure you can take Brees.  Way too many picks this year.  Also, Foster over Apete?  APete had a horrible team around him and he still dominated game in and game out.  Think what he would do with just 1 weapon next to him, let alone a offense of studs.  Harvin is a interesting pick, if you are going from day 1 of the season, pre injury.  Even then I would take him as the #3 WR at best just for a versatility.

I dont have too many other bones to pick... I personally would take AJ Green as my #2 WR and then would find a spot for Darrell Washington at LB... that dude is freakishly fast for LB and will be a star very soon.
