Hey all,

I was looking at some of the iron head componets at a few of the Component stores and a lot of them look pretty darn nice.  So as I kept looking I starting thinking about which one(s) I think I would use if I were going to go the "build your own" route.  I couldn't narrow it down to 1.  After all that I had an idea.

Lets say you had to give up your current set of clubs for 1 year and the ONLY clubs you are allowed to play, except for the putter, are clubs made from components you select.  You can select from any component shop, not just Golfsmith or Golfworks.

So what iron heads would you have in your bag at the end of the year?  What would you choose for your Driver, then your Hybrids?

I'm curious to see what you all will choose.  I think I would take the Maltby KE4 for my Irons.  I don't know about the others as I haven't looked at those heads in a LONG time.

Lets hear it everyone.

Thanks for the time.

Hope your Holiday time was a blessing for you.

Nalajr

You're going to get a ton of "Wishon"s and "+1"s

And there is a reason for that. Tom has some quality gear that holds its own against any major OEM on the market. If I was (as you say) "FORCED" to play Wishons I would likely end up playing better because I would be properly fitted for all of my clubs.

I'd go back to the Maltby forged offerings. Two reasons: One, I've played them before, and thought they played very well. Good feel and playability.

Two, the universal hosel bore works well with .355 taper-tip shafts. I won't play parallel tip shafts. And I can buy them (heads) retail and build them myself. I don't need to pay someone to build clubs for me.

Forced?  Interesting choice of words.   Order few 6 irons heads and test them to see which will fit your game.   Alpha, Wishon, SMT, infiniti, Geek Golf, etc…

I already play maltby forged cb with dgs300 sensicore and tour velvet mid that I built. I have no plans on changing and I wasn't forced.

Just look at my Sig and go to the WITB thread and you will see what I am "forced" to play. Believe me when I say I am not losing anything going from my 2011 TM MB/MC TP's. The Wishon 575's are great clubs. I did put DG Tapers in them because I don't like using parallel either, just used brass shims.

I have also played Maltby MMB's in the past and they were very good clubs.

I play MMB's right now, have tried replacing them several times and failed though they are probably leaving soon. I would give serious consideration to the Maltby TE's.25 bucks a head for a true forged (as opposed to form forged) head that is plenty playable for most levels of golfer is hard to beat. If money were no object, I would have a bag full of Wishons (actually just look at STG113's signature one more time and you pretty much see the bag I would have if I could)

There are no shortage of quality components out there. Wishon, Maltby, Snake eyes continues to make good products but it seems golf smith may be phasing them out. Hard to say for sure they just have so few options these last few years. Even companies like Hireko have some quality heads in their higher dollar lines like Dynacraft. There are plenty of POS components out there too there is no doubting that.

Even if I played a set of Snake Eyes components, I would feel secure in the knowledge that their QC and specs would be tighter than pretty much any off the rack jobby I found in a BB store.

Wishon isn't really a component company. Their focus is on fitting, so prepackaging clubs would make no sense.

There is also GeoTech, if you guys haven't checked them out yet - JDM components.

You do realize Wishon sells components and they do have clubmakers section where they sell components and not prepackaged sets.

You do realize he said "their focus" and "isn't really a component company"? He didn't say Wishon doesn't sell components. So yes, he realizes that. His point was Wishon's main business focus is to get customers linked up with their clubmakers to custom fit clubs for them. And he is 100% correct.

For me it would be KZG irons ( whick I played for a few years before the Adams CB3's ) and Geek woods. I would have said BANG woulds but since Steve left they definitely aren't the same.

There are a lot of great component irons out there -- just find one you like the looks of, and get them fit.  If you liked the forged feel, you can't go wrong with Wishons and Golfworks.  My current gamers are Burner 2.0 clones from Sun Valley Golf, made from soft 304 stainless -- you can bend them just about as easily as forged and have a nice feel.  I picked them up from Tempo Golf Components, but Sun Valley will sell directly to you and they have a lot of 304SS offerings.

That, and I actually have an account with TWGT, so...

Irons and wedges - TE Forged and M-Series from Golfworks
Hybrids, FWs and Driver - Wishon
Putter is a problem unless I'm allowed to use a 10 year old Maltby PET Tour.

I played Maltby MMB irons for a few years and they where awesome, great control, very forgiving for the club head style and I know this will get me removed from this site but the feel was softer than the Mizzys I now play

The snake eyes putters the last few years have been really nice,( the top line one I forget the name) I even use one in my backup bag that I leave at the lake house.

I've actually hit some kzg's and the clubs I hit actually performed pretty well.  They had a great feel too as they were forged

I'm currently gaming Golfworks Tricept irons.  I replaced my Mizuno JPX800 Pros with them a year ago, and never looked back. My wife and son also play Golfworks.  Not to mention, I've built 3 sets for other friends of mine.  Another buddy dumped his Taylormades for Golfsmith irons 2 years ago, and he loves them. Components IMHO are as good as most OEM's, if built properly.

Sooo.............I would play Golfworks Components from Driver to Wedges!
