They're a few hours into a diluted vinegar bath and substantially brighter... while softened, it's still proving difficult to get the patina out of the cavity.

The vinegar got the irons to a much cleaner but dull red-ish copper color... a quick rub-down with Brasso (without much elbow grease) took it the next step to a shiny-penny look.  The Brasso also helped substantially with the muck/patina remaining in the cavity.  I've returned them to see if I can loosen up a bit more of what remains in the cavity as well as some of what remains inside the mild pitting/chatter marks... I'm hoping it doesn't return the dull red-ish hue, but luckily I know just a tiny bit of Brassoing will take care of that.  I may also give Coke a try... I assume any carbonated cola will work, even diet?

From there I need to actually hit them as-is and see if they're worth putting on a set of matching shafts with serviceable grips.  I also need to head back to the same Goodwill in hopes the Pw has found its way to the floor.

I feel bad that I didn't tell you the whole process. Darn. After the vinegar, you get the red off with 0000 steel wool, which also shines them up nicely.  Darn.  Still, not too late to apply that final step.  Brasso is horrific.  Coke is weak. I have been using white vinegar and ultra-fine steel wool for years.

Also, the vinegar needs and overnight soak at least.

Ended up going with an overnight diet coke bath and that took the remaining patina out of the cavity as well as the chatter/pits/dings/gouges.  I think they're looking about as good as they're going to and hopefully I can hit them sometime this week and decide if they're worth re-shafting.

There was no rust, just chloride/sulfide patina.  I was able to get the result needed with what I had on-hand, but may try Coke next time around if I keep them long enough for patina to return and again decide to remove it.

Would love to see how they turned out.  Post some pics!

Here's how they turned out.  Pretty sure they'll be heading to the BST, either as heads only, on DG S300 (if they're .355) or on KBS Tour 90 S (if they're .370).

Look really nice. However, if you are selling them and they have the original shafts, I wouldn't reshaft before selling. You are likely to get more if they have the originals.

2 of 8 have been re-shafted with non-matching shafts... one with a TT Lite and one with a random "Accuflex" which I think is an Apollo shaft.  I'm guessing since they don't match, they'll appeal more to someone as just heads or on a matching set (I happen to have TT Release Sensicore and KBS Tour 90 both laying around).

That's not par... about $50-$100 less than par for really nice ones, with SW to boot... good job...

Picked up a set of Callaway Big Bertha 2002 3-P in EXCELLENT shape with original grips in great shape as well for $14.99. A little rust but that's easily taken care of.

Later in the day I picked up a set of Callaway Big Bertha Gold 3-P with RCH Graphite shafts for $3.99. Need to replace Snake Eyes grips.

Both are soaking in Coke right now...

Sweet!  I love the Big Berthas!

Both came out great. The 2002s look brand new. Gonna add a little paint fill on an iron or two. Can't believe how nice these are.

I honestly bought the Golds for a flip. I found a replacement 5 iron for $14 which is on the way. Seeing how these are firm shafts and they are somewhat rare, I may take them out for a round this weekend...

Exactly what I'm do with most of the old clubs I find.  Lots of fun. They are like a time machine.

I keep some vintage clubs (much to my wife's chagrin). I have a set of Wilson Staff FG17s, TaylorMade T-Ds, Ping Eye2s, Karstens and ISIs that are never for sale.

I'll game them from time to time, especially the TMs, Eye2s and ISIs. The ISIs are still amazing clubs. I also keep a set of Eye2 and ISI BeCus...

I would have loved to see Hogan, Nelson, Hagen, Ouimat and many other of those old timers play with new technology...

Picked these up for 5 each at a yard sale. Wish the Duval cover still had the head inside haha.

Just purchased a very similar setup to what I was playing 5-7 years ago:
Titleist 983K 9.5 with Graphite Design YS-6 (my all-time favorite shaft)
Titleist 585.H 19 degree with Graphite Design YS+
Titleist 735.CM 4-PW with Rifle Project X
Cleveland CG10 54 degree
Random junk stand bag
Half dozen Noodles
All for $60
I figure this will be my bag that I'll leave down in Florida for the 2-3 times a year I get down to my in-laws condo and play.
PING K15 9.5* w/ PING TFC 149D
PING G15 17* w/ Fujikura Motore F1 75
PING G15 20* hybrid w/ Aldila Serano
PING G15 4-UW
PING Eye2 XG SW & LW
PING Redwood D66 w/ SuperStroke

Had this exact setup (not all that exotic since it was a very popular stock shaft!) and have very fond memories of those days.  I hope it serves you well!

Titleist 909f3 15*
Titleist 913h 19*
