Hello all,

So I have finally kicked my 17 degree Titleist 909H hybrid outta my bag and put back in my 3 iron. I am way more consistent with a 3 iron than I am with the hybrid. Now my only problem is a huge distance gap between my 14 degree 3 wood and my 21 degree 3 iron. I am thinking about a 5 wood to fill that gap and was wondering what everyone's opinion is on the latest and greatest 5 wood technology?? Your input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Chad

I really like the rbz tour.   I always had problems with too high of launch/spin with 5woods.  This one is penetrating and accurate.  It is longish but if you cut it down you can manipulate your gaps.

thanks EJ! I have heard nothing but good things about the rbz tour! Was considering that or the Ping I20 most likely, and might be trying a 20 degree hybrid of some sort just to see how it performs against the 3 iron!

I can't comment on the i20.  I had a i15 5 wood and had the ballooning and flight problems.  But I much preferred the flat sole (titleist style) on the Ping.  The RBZ has a more rounded sole that takes some getting used to.  I don't mind it much anymore but keep this in mind.  RBZ is deeper face.

I personally don't think technology has improved five woods to the extent of drivers and more recently, three woods. I think finding the combo of head and shaft that gives you the flight you're looking for and the proper distance, as opposed to maximizing distance is far more important. Fwiw I play the 906f2 and in loving it so far

What was the distance gap between the 17 hybrid and your 3 iron?

The Nike vr pro limited edition is a great fairway.  I would also recommend the G20. It is more forgiving than the nike, but not as long.

Thats also something I've considered, hybrid goes about 245, 3 iron about 230 ish, so its a 15 yard gap. I carry 4 wedges 47* AP2 PW, 50, 54, 58 degree vokey.. I am just not consistent enough with that paticular hybrid to game it full time. If I could find one that I could hit on a consistent basis I would drop the 50 and 54 and pick up a 52 and play my 3 wood, a 17 degree hybrid and maybe a 20 degree hybrid, but its all a work in progress.

I'd say the Nike VR Pro LE or the Ping I20.  Don't sleep on the new Anser fairways either - they are starting to show up in a lot of Ping pro bags.

A little longer than what I expect out of my 5 wood.  Yeah I would base my decision on what is dependable off the deck.  Consider the tour issued TM R9 heads.

i20, Anser (I set mine on the unmarked setting for flatter lie angle), Some of the older Adams stuff is cheap and better than whats coming out now. ie 4060, 3070, 5050

Im not a fan of deep faced stuff so I guess that's why I havent tried the RBZ.  When they use it on tour I always think those guys are hitting driver off the deck lol

I enjoy my oldie Titleist 906F2 18*, they can be had for cheap.  If you want a new option try the new Mizuno JPX-825 5-wood, it feels extremely solid at impact.  The Mizuno MP650 is also a great option.

I personally like the Nike VR_S 5.  Although I love my RocketBallz 9.5, I just wasn't feeling the fairway woods.

R11 Ti, I have plenty of confidence with that club. Probably one of my better purchases. Easy to hit, great sound at impact and The adjustability is great because you can adapt to course conditions. If you are playing a really short course you can change it to a 17 degree 4 wood and pound it 255 and leave room for an extra wedge

Jack wishes he had the 5 wood version too :(

The Adams Speedline F11 is easily my favorite fairway wood. I use the steel version and love them. Easy to hit off the tee or turf, great flight, and distance. The ONLY downside is the stock shaft options. The stock Voodoo played very soft to flex , but they've been out for a while and can be found cheap, so you can swap them out without spending a ton.

I got used i20 5 wood from Golfsmith. The shaft is alida nvs 85 x. Took it out on range today for first time. Felt great. Better than hybrid at the same loft. I already have i20 23 deg hybrid Black Project X 6.0. It's perfect!

I really like my Wilson Staff DXi 5 wd with stock Voodoo.  It is very easy to control and very few surprises with hot ones.  I hit it almost as far as my TEE 3 wd.
